   Tobias had been rather stressed out lately. Things at work were not going well and it seemed that they were just spiraling out of control. He glanced over at the voice who was referring to him and was skeptical to say the least. “How exactly does that work?” He asked, mostly curious now. 

“Oh, there’s a few ways,” Beulah said, reaching into her purse. She dug around in there for a little while until she found what she was looking for. “Aura readings, dips into the psyche, aura cleansing...” She held out a small business card. “I--I didn’t want to be rude by saying it,” she said, watching his words drift around. Though she didn’t know what his voice typically looked like, she could tell they were strained. “But you look like maybe you need a little pick-me-up.”

     Molly knew her briefly from school but they never really spoke. She had met a girl at one of her charity events who was also Wiccan and her birthday was coming up. She wanted to get her something special but she didn’t know what. She figured this may be the best place to come to. Molly didn’t want to interrupt her but it was too late. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to bother you… I just had a quick question and was hoping you could help me.”

“Oh, please. No worries at all,” Evangeline said, smiling wide. “I’d be a terrible shop owner if I growled at those who came for my business.” She set the writing aside and leaned forward on her elbows. She generally assumed that those who came in were looking for books, as Wicca was even less prominent in the wix community than in the Muggle community. Baffling, she thought, but true. “Of course. How can I help?”

          Rose looked to her friend and took a closer examination. She frowned a little at what she saw. “Bloody hell, you do know that you’re suppose to dodge getting hit in quidditch,” she asked and held out the bottle that had her facial mask in it. “Mostly just work… and work… and more work.”

“Bloody hell, is that true?” Guy teased, taking the bottle from his friend. “Well no wonder I’ve been having such a hard time on the team.” He squirted some into his hand and began to rub it onto his face. He had no idea what the mask was for--pores? Blemishes? Dryness?--but that hardly mattered. “Uh-oh. You know, the more you work, the easier it is to convince yourself to treat yo self. That’s just facts.”

    Lily liked to go out for coffee alone. It was the only time she felt like she could actually breathe. Despite summer nearing in close, there was still rain sprinkling outside. She liked those days best. She took a sip of her coffee but then was slightly startled by the stranger who spoke up. Lily glanced at them from the corner of her eyes. They expected an answer. One she did not have. Lily felt anxiety bubble up in the pit of her stomach at the mere thought of having to figure out what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. “I don’t.” She finally responded, “I just graduated from Hogwarts and have no idea what I want to do with my life. I guess I should figure it out soon.” 

Cricket hummed in response. At least he wasn’t the only one. Then again, she said she’d only just graduated, whereas he’d graduated two years ago. “Everyone’s put on the same timeline,” he mumbled--mostly to himself, but it was loud enough for his companion to hear. Why had he spoken up? Now he had to see through an entire conversation with a stranger. What came next? Usually he would be done with a conversation by this point--or, rather, his conversation partner would be done with him. “I like squids,” he said after a lengthy pause. “But I don’t think there’s much of an industry for befriending squid.”

     Jonah never saw Cricket as anything other than his brother but he knew that other people didn’t. Despite conversations with his mother, he was unaware of what to do to make certain things better for him. Easier maybe. He wasn’t sure. He didn’t want to change him because regardless of anything, he loved his brother. Jonah smiled back at him, “Well good. If you want, you can set the table and I’ll start serving.” 

“I can do that.” Cricket headed for the cupboards. Straight-forward, correct-answer tasks like these were good for him. He knew what to expect and he knew there was a right way to do this. He’d worked in a cafe as a server for a little bit and then another time as a busboy. The former ran into the problem of being sociable with customers and overwhelming Cricket on busy days. The latter was just as overstimulating (if not more) as the former. “Did you have a good day?”

    “Just because they don’t trust a wolf on the team or whatever.” She didn’t want to get into it a lot because she knew that she’d get upset. Roxie set her pen down and grinned, “Where we off to, captain?” 

“‘S just stupid,” Halcyon said with a wave of his hand. “They think ya too dangerous ta be a hit witch? I mean...’s just illogical. If they think ya bein’ a werewolf makes any bloody difference, then the difference should be in their favor! They’re probably just mad they couldn’t compete.” He took in a deep breath. He’d know Roxanne for roughly a year, but they were as close as if they’d known each other for ten. “How ‘bout somewhere with nice pastries?”

    She had just graduated Hogwarts so naturally, her parents were giving her time to sort out everything in her life. She still had no idea what she wanted to do or where she wanted to go. Most days, she felt a little stuck because she should have a vague idea by now, right? She didn’t have the slightest clue however. Lily walked into the kitchen and did not expect to be greeted by her older brother. Someone she at one point considered herself close to but now she felt like a stranger to. She swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat, “Albus. I didn’t know you were back already.”

Albus gave a sheepish, lopsided grin. “I sent a letter home,” he said. “But I guess with all the craziness....” he drifted off, thinking, and then shrugged. “Things can get lost. And I didn’t really make a big deal of it.” He shoved his hands into his pockets and shrugged. He took in his sister, smiling and proud. “I wanted to do a whole ‘surprise I’m home!’ thing, but the end of the study was crazy and I got a little lazy with non-study things and...yeah...it got away from me. I’m sorry.” A pause. “How are you? Are you doing good?” Even since he came out, Albus had always gotten the sense that Lily was pulling away from her. He tried to scrub those thoughts away, labeling them paranoia, but as he was gone...it seemed he sent more letters to his sister than he received.

       Scorpius glanced over his friend. He was so familiar to him but so different in other ways. Good ways of course. Despite this, he didn’t feel like he was looking at a stranger. He felt an immense amount of relief to have him here in front of him again however. It had been too long and to say that Scorpius hadn’t missed him would be an incredible lie. Scorpius dropped the pen and didn’t hesitate to get up and suddenly hug Albus. It wasn’t a common thing that he would usually do, be so abrupt and sudden but he was just happy Albus was home.

Albus’s eyebrows raised and for a beat his arms just hung there, surprised and a little unsure. Sure, Albus was a touchy guy--he elbowed, bumped arms with, rested his head on the shoulders of, and tapped his foot against those he was close with--but hugging wasn’t something that Scorpius did often. Albus thought they should do it more, especially now that they’d been apart for so long. After a moment, he finally lifted his arms and wrapped them around his best friend easily Any nerves or stiffness that resided in him drifted away. “Well, it’s just short of a blessing that the observatory here was hiring, huh? Must be fate that brought me back to my old stomping grounds.” It wasn’t. Albus searched and waited and searched and waited until a job nearby popped up. He’d, very consciously, made the choice to come back home instead of make a new one. Odd, really, when he thought back to just two or three years ago when all he wanted to do was run away and have a fresh start. “What have you been up to since our last letter? Brilliant things, no doubt.”

          Rose’s eyes closed as she took comfort in the fact that her cousin, who was more like a brother than a cousin, was back in the same country as she was. There was no denying, she had missed him dearly. She squeezed him back before she took a step back to get a better look at him. “How is it you seem even taller, that’s not fair!”

Albus reciprocated the squeeze, just basting in all the warmth he’d missed on his trip abroad. This was why he couldn’t stand a job anywhere but in England. He couldn’t be away from those he was close to permanently. “Oh, well, you know, testosterone can do wonderful things,” he said easily. Although he wouldn’t exactly deem himself tall when he stood at a mere 5′5. “I feel a lot healthier than before too.”

“Ya know,” Halcyon said, taking another bite of the chip in his hand. “I’d love ta accidentally invent a new, delicious food. ‘S the ultimate win in life. Ya get ta be famous for food, and ya get ta probably make tons o’ money. ‘S not a bad gig. Not a bad gig at all.”

“You know, there’s no one who couldn’t benefit from an aura reading and aura cleansing,” Beulah said, softly and with a smile, as she watched their movements and the drifting of their colors. “Even when life is good, you can still prepare for what’s next to find out what in particular is giving you such positive energy.”

Cricket wasn’t really one to talk to anyone. Mostly he stayed quiet, stayed in his face, and kept his eyes drawn away. While he was doing the latter two, he felt an itch. An itch of anxiety as he, once again, contemplated his career situation. “How did you know what you wanted to do? How did you know what career was the one you were supposed to strive for?” Still glued to his space, still with his eyes withdrawn, he was seeking counsel from whomever would hear his question and answer him.

          “No, I suppose it is a bit of a conversation starter,” Lucy spoke up though her nose was still wrinkled from the sight of it. “You okay, though? No headaches or anything’?”

“Yeah. I’ve got a goddamn bitch of a headache,” Guy said immediately. “Them’s the breaks, I suppose.” It came with the territory. Then again, Guy didn’t feel like he had much of a choice when it came to careers. He was dumb and athletic. The niche was small, in his mind. Not that he’d ever complain, that is. He loved Quidditch.

        Rose took a bite of her carrot and looked to her friend, her face covered in the face mask that she had just placed on. Guy always had brilliant timing. “No, I’ve been relaxing my bones. Being an adult, is exhausting work apparently.”

“I could’ve told you that if you’d just asked. Could’ve skipped all the unnecessary adulting.” Guy immediately flopped himself down on the couch next to Rose. He’d been knocked over real good in practice, giving his neck some nasty whip lash. “My neck hurts,” he announced, and then quickly followed that with, “What adult things have you been doing today, anyway?”

   Being one the best Quidditch players had it’s downfalls for Alyx. They weren’t used to having so much attention on them. Alyx knew their father was disappointed in their choice of career but after helping her school team by filling in one time so they could play, they had fallen in love with the game. They were about to hex the person next to them when someone interrupted them and made sure they left. Alyx let out a deep breath, “They pretty much owe you their life because I was getting fed up with being asked if I wanted a drink. Evidently, I don’t want their company. Thank you.” 

“Oh,” Cricket said, hardly bothered as his eyes found the back of the retreating form. He hadn’t really noticed that anything was off (not very surprising, really), and had merely approached because he recognized one of them. “I was just coming to say hello.” Less because he had a strong desire to and more because he knew that social norms dictated he should. Nothing against Alyx, of course. This had nothing to do with them and all to do with Cricket’s lack of social graces.

    Jonah glanced over his shoulder at his brother when he walked through the door. He noticed there was something off about the way he walked in just by the look on his face. Jonah knew how to pick up certain expressions that Cricket made over the years. The apology came soon after and Jonah had a feeling he knew why. He put his hand on his shoulder and gave a gentle squeeze. “I made dinner. Come on and help me serve and we can talk about it if you want or not. Either or.”

Cricket kept his eyes locked on his hands. He didn’t typically look people in the eye, but he usually tried to at least look near the eyes. Above the shoulder, at the collarbone, sometimes even at the chin...these were all ways that he tried to give the impression of normal human eye contact. Not that it really worked, anyway. “Okay. I’m hungry anyway.” He knew that his inability to keep a job was just another way in which he burdened Jonah.

    “You’re silly.” Dani couldn’t help but giggle as she picked up a french fry. It was one of her favorite things to go on walks with him in the park. She leaned back against the bench and watched the strangers that walked by. “What are you going to do for the rest of the day?” She peeked over at him with a questioning gaze.

In turn Halcyon, too, leaned back against the bench. “Oh, ya know, the usual. Probably follow ya around like a puppy ‘til ya shoo me away,” he said with a wink. Being friendly and flirty came easily for Halcyon. “So I believe the better question is what are you goin’ ta do?” He already had a suggestion ready in the back of his mind, should she not have an answer of her own.
