What is the HQ Urban Fantasy Bang?

This event is for those who love both Haikyuu!! and urban fantasy. Our goal is to bring writers and artists together to create new urban fantasy themed content for everyone to enjoy.  

About the Genre:

Traditionally, urban fantasy is a contemporary sub-genre that often features supernatural/magical elements in real-world settings. For the purpose of this bang, writers should give more focus to the magic/supernatural aspect.

Restrictions for the Event:

No content that includes the following: noncon, dubcon, incest, pedophilia, or character x reader. 

You must tag your stories appropriately! 

Minors cannot create NSFW content for this event, be it art or fic.  

About the Tiers:

Tiers: There are two tiers to work with. Writers will indicate what tier they are writing for when they submit their summaries, and this information will be made available to the artists during the claiming period. 

Tier 1–5,000+ words, 1 full art piece

Tier 2–10,000+ words, 2 full art pieces

Summary Submissions:

Writers will fill out a form answering questions about their fic by August 7th. Once completed, the mods will create lists of SFW and NSFW summaries to be made available during claims. 

Claims:

Artists will have access to the appropriate summary lists (minors will not have access to the NSFW list). Based on this information, artists will fill out a form indicating their top choices of summary during the claiming period (August 10-15). Once all the artists have completed this step, the mods will pair artists and writers. 

Check-ins:

There will be three check-ins: October 2-4, November 6-8, and December 18-20. There will be forms asking a few questions about your progress in the event. Each participant will fill these forms out individually. 

Asking for Extensions:

If you need an extension, please notify the mods at least 24 hours before the deadline.

What if I need to drop out:

If you need to drop out, please contact a mod as soon as possible through tumblr, discord, or the bang email ([email protected]). 

What if I change my contact information? 

If you change your social media handles/email, please let the mods know! It helps us communicate with you.

fic: Under Your Skin

Relationship(s): Kuroo x Daishou and Kiyoko x Yachi

Rating: T

Word count: 10k

Summary: Daishou Suguru owns a tattoo shop. You walk in, maybe you have an idea, maybe you just had a feeling you were supposed to come by today. He’ll have an appointment in your name, though you don’t recall calling in beforehand. He will hold your hand, stare into your eyes (soul), and he’ll know. He’ll see the tattoo you need. Maybe you’ll get a cat sleeping on your collarbone, feeling its warmth and its purr on sad days. A sunflower that always looks to the one you love wherever they are. A compass always pointing home.

Kuroo owns a different tattoo shop. You call in, make an appointment, and get the tattoo you want. It is very ordinary.

One day, Bokuto shows Kuroo his new tattoo. This introduces him to Daishou. The two don’t exactly get along. Curiosity just might get the best of Kuroo in this one.

In the middle of this pissing contest, Yachi gets a tattoo and meets probably the most beautiful woman she has ever seen.

To the untrained eye, Matsukawa Issei is nothing but a random funeral home employee who makes sure his job is well done. At night, however, he is a shinigami whose mission is to help souls leave the body after a living being passed away. It’s not the funniest job, but it’s his true nature, and if you dare tell him that “dead men tell no tales” he’ll sure laugh in your face.

One night, when Matsukawa is going for a round near the cemetery, he catches a glimpse of magic coming from the nearby forest. There, in the middle of a fairy ring, stands a pink-haired witch, knees in the mud and blue shadows dancing on his face. As soon as Hanamaki notices Matsukawa’s attention on him, he fails his spell and vanishes.

Nonetheless, coincidences don’t exist, and as the two of them keep bumping into each other, they realize that there might be some higher power bringing them together. Who knows? Perhaps Matsukawa could help Hanamaki with the issue he’s been facing for the past few days…

Hi~! Here’s a scene I drew from @kibbinblr‘s fic “Numinous” [Chapter 1 posted, rated Mature for implied sexual content, Gods/Angels/Demons AU] as part of the @hqurbanfantasybang​ ! It was really fun to try out isometric perspective on this one, and looking through different interior designs for pubs and bars. Also, this is the first time I’ve ever drawn a mirror reflection! So cool, but so hard 😅.

“Hitoka Yachi is, on the outside, a typical Japanese college student and intern. Every day, she wakes up, has a cup of tea and some breakfast, and bikes from her shared apartment to campus to attend classes.

Only she wakes up about noon, has a flying bike, and also deals in magical potions and remedies from 6pm to midnight. (God, that makes her sound like a drug dealer.) Good thing she’s got a mentor and a wall full of spellbooks to help.”

This piece is the first one I did with so many details and layers. (I can’t believe I spent so much time inking without knowing pen pressure lol). I hope the result lives up to the ridiculous amount of time I put in it!

Summary: Tadashi Yamaguchi has problems. As in: A lot. People can’t stop reminding him that he smells tasty and they’d like to eat him. His best friend and he are indirectly responsible for burning down their previous university. He can’t figure out how to stop turning orange whenever he’s nervous, keeps hitting his antlers on the lintel and the lion’s tail growing out his back seems to have developed a mind of its own. Oh, and of course there is that cute but grouchy med student vampire living across the hall who he is crushing on hard but doesn’t have the courage to ask out! On top of everything he now has to transfer to a new uni and try to survive campus chaos. Luckily, a pixie with chronic bed-hair and a shapeshifter who transforms into a duck rather than an owl whenever he’s upset, decide to take him on and teach Tadashi some confidence. Inbetween mysterious mentors, headless centaurs, annoyed dragons, hungry werewolves, kickboxing archangels, literal gods and sassy half-ghosts he isn’t quite sure if they are actually helping his increasing anxiety attacks, but hey… it’s the effort that counts, isn’t it?

The creature is silent and unmoving, but its eyes follow Tendou’s, watching and waiting for him.

“What big eyes you have,” Tendou whispers to him. A low growl is his only reply.

“What big ears you have,” Tendou notices next, watching them twitch at the mention of them. It’s way too obvious that the wolf understands him because its ears twitch in unison with his words. Without warning, it’s jaws open to reveal a row of teeth that glow in the moonlight.

“What big teeth you have,” Tendou finishes. Now, he’s so close to the wolf, he could almost touch it. In fact, everything seems sharper and clearer than before, including the familiarity of this beast before him.

Bokuto felt doused in cold water for a second time that night, as Kuroo froze against him. He released him all at once and nearly tripped on books backing away from him. Kuroo didn’t stop until he was more than six feet away. Belatedly, Bokuto realizes that it wasn’t the light. Kuroo’s skin really was paler. 

They stared at each other for seconds that felt like hours until Bokuto stuttered out, “You’re a vampire.” Like that wasn’t the most astute observation of the last century.
