an eyebrow quirked as she wrote, slightly begrudging giving away personal information. no matter how trivial. “that...isn’t a bad idea.” her eyes stayed down, scribbling out the rest of the form. “I was going to get something for my brother, his initial. but i’ve always thought about getting a sternum piece.” she looked up finally to hand the clipboard to him. “is that too impulsive?”

“thank you.” she took the clipboard and started to fill out her information. “yes. but, for the record -- it’s the commitment that’s freaking me out, not the needle. it’s sentimental and i’m...not sentimental.”

daphne wasn’t a nervous person, but her hands shook as she opened the door to the tattoo parlor. her eyes scanned the designs on the walls. “oh, um, a session.”

she raised a brow as the man paused before shaking her hand, but was pleased when granted a shake. “that’s fair. just a thought, but I see your point.” she had witnessed a human burning their own eyebrows off. which, though a fond memory, was obviously dangerous. “amazing! thank you so much. when would you like me to start?”

The best place for stargazing was at the top of the highest hill. So that’s where she’d driven, parking her car as high up as it would go before she climbed to the top. The trees thinned out and there was a nice grassy patch where she laid down her blanket, plopping down and turning on some music on her phone, just letting it and the sky lull her into calm. 

the moon was out, and naturally so was daphne. she enjoyed gathering ingredients for potions at night and with this moonlight she couldn’t resist. she was taken aback, to say the least, to stumble upon a woman in the grass. “you’ve got some balls, blondie, being out here alone.” she smiled teasingly.

         “I do readings on request.” He answered between stocking the shelf, setting the empty books in a line and pushing them as far back as they’d go into the shelf. When all was said and done he wiped his hands on his jeans and straightened himself out. “I’ve got a few of my own decks in the back for it. It’s not a common enough occurrence to offer as a normal attraction to the place but when the right people come in and ask for it, it’s there.” At least that was how he ran it now, while there was just him and the hours were enough for him to sleep in, if he needed to. That was a perk and a negative about being so new in the town — he made his own hours and held to them with just himself in the shop. “Is that what you were interested in? A reading?”

she nodded, before looking up at the man with a smile. “put a ‘fortune teller’ sign outside and humans will flock, I bet you.” cheesy, sure, but true. she extended a hand to shake. “daphne russo. i’m actually looking for a job if you’re hiring. I don’t require much as far as salary goes. I do tarot, palms, hell I can use a crystal ball if needed. or if you just need someone to help with stock.”

         Eyes shifted upward from the stock shelf of the store — The Acheron was specifically meant to cater to the magic-users of the safe haven, providing them with any needs for their spells ( outside of herbal or floral ) they may have. It’d been one hell of a first week attempting to get everything up and running, especially since the incident at the bonding ceremony. Rider had been obviously short-handed but at least the work kept him honest. The inside of the store was what you’d expect: almost hokey, like any other wicca shop one might come across, save for the relics holding real power in the right hands. When the bell chimed he eyed the door, “Gimme a minute” before continuing on with the last of the stock in his hands.

the witch clicked her tongue but called back for the man that there was no need to hurry in her best professional voice. daphne eyes the store with moderate curiosity. she recognized most of the items and even needed to restock some. she needed a job, not for money, but to busy herself and to maybe spend some more time around other witches. she wasn’t going to grow on her own anymore, and she didn’t have any desire to join a coven anytime soon. her fingers brushed over a set of tarot cards. “ever thought about offering readings?”

I don’t truthfully care that much.” daphne said the words slowly, less venom, more amusement. “I didn’t tell you what to do. I said you should be somewhere safe. i’m sure at least one of the humans that just got abducted had the same ideas that you have, and it didn’t fare well. you’re here to be protected. no one’s calling you useless.”

His heart started to ache. He could’ve kept her safe, he could’ve been there. But he ran. He ran and ran until his legs couldn’t take him any further and he left her behind instead of staying and at least trying to put up a fight. “No, they didn’t. I thought they might’ve gotten you. I’m so sorry I couldn’t protect you… I’m so sorry, Daph.”

“no. no.” she shook her head, raven locks swinging. a faint smile across her features for a fleeting moment. he was too good, too human. and daph was too soft to not hate him for it. she flinched slightly when he wiped the blood from her face, not used to being taken care of. “i’m your protector, seth. you did the right thing by running. i mean that. and not in a you’re inferior sort of way.” when it came down to it the preservation of humans was more important that another witch, she knew. “but whatever non-justified guilt you have you can fix by helping me home.” daphne let a tiny smile tug at the corners of her mouth this time.
