a few weeks into her relationship with Dana Emma is approached by Princess. Her immediate first thought is ‘she found out’ but Princess didn’t have the look of glee that said she knew the new goss, instead she looked almost…. concerned. She pulled Emma off to the side and whispered, “did you and Dana break up?”

Emma was horrified, “what? Why would we break up?” She exclaimed far too loudly.

“Well for the first two weeks I thought you guys just had a fight or something but now she hasn’t touched you or done anything even remotely romantic to you at work for three weeks!” Princess seemed incredibly concerned.

“…We’ve been dating for three weeks,” Emma replied. Back to her regular demeanor Princess was now doubled over laughing,

in between wheezes she managed, “oh my god, everybody is going to be so relieved.”

“Everybody?!”

You know my absolute favourite detail about Emma? She shows up PREPARED. She has pockets full of pens and notepads and equipment. And it's a bit of a visual gag that Dana takes them all off her without saying anything, the implication being this ain't nursing school, kid

But like. Emma doesn't show up clueless. She's taken time to think about and plan for her first day. She wants to make a good first impression. She really really wants to learn and she takes every opportunity to do so. She asks really insightful questions, but she also listens to the answer and then puts what she learns into practice on her first day.

That's not a naive kid. That's a well-qualified and talented woman in a really high-stress work environment. Show her some respect!

Before meeting Dana Emma always felt that when people tried to stick up for her they would baby her. It was partially because of her love for all things girly people assumed that she was some delicate flower that needed protecting, but then there was Dana. Dana who knew just how brave and smart and capable Emma was and chose to care for her anyway. She always respected her decisions and even though she would make the occasional comment about her age she saw her as a fully formed adult. For once Emma could feel comfortable relying on someone without them trying to control her or speak over her instead of speak up for her.

I do enjoy the concept of butchfemme nolevans with butch!dana if we're talking about rural au,,, but if we're keeping it real. dana is not butch. at MOST she could be a soft masc. and that's like. pushing it. she's pretty damn feminine I think ppl just see a woman that's not a soft spoken little sweetheart and instantly label her as masculine lmfao

like this is the most masc she's looked. one of those is after her makeup has worn off and she's been fucking punched and the other she's still like clearly feminine lmao

Post Dana divorcing her husband and pre her and Emma dating Emma accidentally calls Dana mom.

Emma is hanging on by a thread, it’s hour 12 of her shift and she’s been on autopilot since hour 10. She feels super glued together and is fairly certain that if she stops moving for a single second she’ll fall asleep on her feet. She has a question about a patient, it’s nothing serious but her brain is basically mush at this point so she swings by the nurses station to ask Dana, “Mom?” Her mouth unhelpfully supplies instead of Dana or literally anything else. Her tired brown are now wide as a dinner plates as the entire nurses station freezes.

“Come again?” Dana asks, slightly bewildered as behind her Perlah and Princess are already starting to giggle.

Dana’s words restart Emma’s temporarily offline brain and she springs into action, “oh my god Dana I’m so sorry, I’m really tired, it’s been such a long shift.” Emma can feel herself starting to ramble and knows her face must be bright red.

”That’s alright hon what do ya need, sorry one second,” she turns to Perlah and Princess, “that’s enough from you two, it’s the final hour of our shift no time for gossip, come on I wanna go home tonight!”
