My personal goal is to try and make fanfic binding as accessible to everyone as possible, so here are some resources on how to make a fanfic hardcover for under $25.

This is a barebones bind for the broke college students and such. Happy to field questions, too!

Here's a proposed budget breakdown:

Loosely organized thoughts:

Fanfic bookbinders often share typesets amongst each other. Never pay for a typeset for a fanfic.

You'll hear a lot about grain direction for your printer paper, but as a newbie on a budget without your own printer, settle for some nice 92 bright paper. If you like the hobby, splurge after but expect to pay at least 2-3x more for short grain paper.

Printing is a pain because some copy shops won't let you print intellectual property smut, and it's very expensive. You are better off bartering instead or looking for a free printer on Buy Nothing.

You know the thick paper wrapping that comes with online orders? It's a good weight for endpapers if you need to scrounge. Paper grocery bags or gift bags (birthday presents) might work, too.

Ask your local library to give you covers from books they are throwing out. Ask for outdated textbooks (those covers are built like tanks) or three-ring binders that are too busted to be binders anymore.

Obtain a used book that was mass produced (so your destruction of it does not impede anyone's access) and maybe even become a little vindictive with it.

If you can afford it, I recommend the Olfa SVR knife (~$10)

If you can afford it, upgrade your ruler to a t-square.

I really hope this resource is helpful! I want to stress how possible this is and encourage people to cherish what they love through art.

one big thing i think people outside fandom (like, all fandoms, fandom in general, not any particular one) tend to misunderstand is they know it's a subculture of people who are weirdly deeply invested in fictional media, and they hear about drama caused by people in those subcultures being unhinged in not-fun ways, and they think the unhingedness comes from the fact of being overinvested in works of fiction.

which is a natural assumption, but in my experience that's not really the case? like in my experience the drama llamas in fandom are usually not the ones who are just genuinely very deeply into the fiction. i've known people who are basically thinking about star trek or x-men comics or supernatural pretty much 100% of their free time and ime that type of person is usually very nice and surprisingly functional in their regular life. when someone's a constant nexus of fandom drama it's usually not that they are obsessed with the actual work of fiction the fandom is about, it's at least one of the following:

what they're obsessed with is not the source material but their unhealthy parasocial relationships with one or more of the people who created it

what they're obsessed with is not the source material but some elaborate shared-universe subset of fanfic about it that's only barely related to the original at this point, and/or an esoteric reading-against-the-text reinterpretation of the source material (often if the canon is active and ongoing this leads to becoming actively hostile toward it for its inevitably increasing failure to conform to their preferred fanon)

what they're obsessed with is not the source material but the fandom itself and gathering clout within it, so that the source material basically only exists to them as a tool for scoring points in increasingly arcane fandom disputes

and very often you get the same person doing 2 and sometimes even all 3 of these, and that's where the trouble really starts

Are these called "tag games" still? idk man it's been a while since I've done one, so thank you to @chainestiche for giving me the chance have fun with one of these!

Current hair color: my natural black, with a truly distressing amount of white/gray hairs for someone who's not even 30. I do think longingly of my dyed dark red balayage that I had from 22-24...

Favorite color: Pink pink pink, always and forever pink, especially a pale pastel pink and a cute cherry blossom pink

One thing you love about yourself: idk if this is truly my own doing or if I've just had god-tier luck in this field, but I'm pretty good at making friends! When I was in a play earlier this year, my castmates were stunned that I had two separate friend groups as well as individual friends coming to see the show, and one castmate even complimented me on "the full, rich community of friendships" that I've built 🥹 I like to joke that the reason I've never been in a relationship is that the universe has funneled all my meet-cute luck into platonic connections rather than romantic ones, and tbh, I can't even complain about that!

If you could be any animal, what would you be? Either a really well-loved ragdoll cat or a koala in a well-maintained animal sanctuary/zoo. Lemme just sleep, eat, and be loved on without worrying about taxes or employment, I beg.

Dream place to visit: Tokyo during cherry blossom season and Egypt (specifically a tour around the ancient sites)

What's one thing you're looking forward to right now? Ooooof idk...I have two pretty big trips coming back to back starting Friday, but I'm more nervous for those than excited 😅 I guess for now I'm most looking forward picking our d&d game back up after our break this month. I had a really nice check-in chat with our DM (she's meeting with each of us to get any updates on our characters and what we want for them) and oh BOY, we have some painful plans for my poor girl hehehe also I talked with the player whose character I started shipping with my character (see my full spiral over their dynamic here) and he said that he's also been thinking they'd be cute together bc of all their accidental parallels and differences, so I'm excited to play a little more with that slow burn now that I have the okay from both the dm and the other player 😈💖

Your biggest dream: Broadly speaking, I still nurse the same dream I've had since high school, of having a comfortable home with the love of my life and a cat or two. But until I meet said love of my life, I have a different dream of one day holding my writing in my hands 🥹 and I have a straight up PIPE dream of one day publishing my writing, but I have a lot of work in both writing and getting a thicker skin before I can seriously contemplate that lmao

PSYCHO PASS UTOPIA HOUND (English | Complete) Summary: Enforcer Shinya Kogami of the Criminal Affairs Division 1 encounters a strange corpse at a crime scene where he is heading with rookie inspector Akane Tsunemori. The bright red jelly stuffed into multiple drawers, with bits of flesh, skin, and bone fragments floating in it, evoked a sense of absurdity buried deep in his memory during his turbulent life as a detective, and the name of a certain man.

(NEW!) PSYCHO PASS RESTAURANT DE CAMPAGNE (English | Complete) Summary: This is the first spin-off novelization of "PSYCHO-PASS," which includes two stories: "Mugunghwa," which depicts the journey of a wandering hacker until he meets Shogo Makishima, and "Restaurant de Campagne," an episode about the cooking that changed the life of enforcer Shusei Kagari.

Note: I will not be translating About a Girl or Rose of Sharon from Asylum 1 and 2. Too graphic, it made me sick when I read the first couple chapters. Neither will I translate PP Volume 1-2 Novelisation of Season 1, it is too lengthy!

How I translate:

I don’t know Japanese. I use a mix of Google translate and Deep L to help me machine translate the novel.

However, my translations have NO AI.

I use my own language skills and construct original sentences, depending on my own understanding of how scenes and emotions flow while trying to preserve the voice of the original author, character honorifics if applicable. Any inconsistencies are chiefly my own.

My native language is not English, it’s my second language of which I’m happy to have a fluent understanding. 😊

fun fact about character development by the way. you can make them develop worse.

like I mean this very seriously as writing advice. the character should experience events and make decisions that make them different at the end of the story. they should be changed. they do not have to be improved.

they can get worse. they can make decisions of an increasingly terrible nature. they can stop taking risks on kindness. they can discover how much they can get away with. they can find religion, or abandon it, with negative effects on their moral creed. the character has to develop. the character does not have to grow.
