Hey guys! I might be deleting tumblr for a while. It's really not been fun latetly and I don't like being so angry at everything all the time. I will come back for time to time to get info about the ml episodes and to give my own opinions about it. But apart from that I want to stop mindlessly scrolling.

that post that’s like, fandom’s obsession with viewing characters as only relatable or shippable or defendable has ruined media literacy in being able to view characters through the lens of themes or narrative theory. character analysis one of my favourite forms of analysis but not at the detriment of being able to understand when a character represents something larger thematically in a story than what they would be if they were just a guy from your high school
did canon do your fave bad or was your fave part of a larger thematic purpose and them having a redemption arc wasn’t conducive with that. does the author hate this character or is the tragedy that befalls them more thematically important than giving them a happy ending. is your fave ooc now or does your rp guide on how to write this character for fanfiction not supersede the story the author was trying to tell.
how are folks on this website convinced that ofmd was deliberately written to show the horrible gritty realism of a terrified abuse victim losing a leg to his tormentor
95% of the amputation scene was archie and jim having banter and kissing
he’s up and walking on a prosthesis the next day and faces absolutely no further leg related problems other than one line about ‘having to relearn the basics’ which is mostly there to justify the candles scene beyond ‘we wanted con o’neill to do a fun little twirl on the hoof while shirtless’
if this was black sails he’d have died of infected toe-itis between seasons (and also none of the rest of the entire show would’ve happened bc it would no longer be a romcom)

Our Flag Means Death s2 is a really interesting study in how forgiveness is something that happens on a one on one level, between the people in the relationship, not on some universal weighing up of Right and Wrong.
Did Stede objectively do enough to make up for abandoning Ed? There's no answer to that. There's only, did he do enough for Ed to take him back?
Did Izzy do anything at all to apologize to Stede for trying to kill him multiple times? No. But that doesn't actually matter to Stede as long as Izzy isn't trying to murder him right now, so he gets to stay on the ship.
Relationship advice, and especially the hetero dating rules variety, makes it seem like there are objective social rules someone has to follow to atone enough to be forgiven. But sometimes you can do all that and someone doesn't want to let you in (see: Ed and Lucius) and other times it doesn't matter whether people outside the relationship think you've done enough as long as the people in the relationship are satisfied.
"ed didn't face any consequences" um he did literally die tho. like he very much did die about it actually. which is kind of the number one consequence a person's actions can have i think
like he was shot, beaten either to death or into a coma depending on your interpretation of the gravy basket, removed as captain, kicked off the ship on his own while at most 12 hours out from death and/or coma and still visibly ill, allowed back on only on condition that he wear literal sackcloth in an actual caricature of atonement, and pretty much loses any relationship he had left with izzy (which like, for the best, but still a consequence). genuinely what more did you want here

The real truth is ofmd is the easiest show to understand and get the themes of. It is not subtle. It doesnt leave that much to subtext. It is very clear in what it's trying to say and you could figure it out with baby's first media analysis. Which is why i have so much disrespect for some of the wild ass, reaching takes that have been concocted about ed and izzy. It is truly not even that complicated and some of these readings are not valid interpretations.

i truly don't give a fuck if you didn't like season 2 of the hit television series our flag means death. all i fucking want in this whole world is for people to say "i didn't like it" NOT "i didn't like it *and here's why because i didn't like it it was bad.*" because how can you look at this once in a fucking LIFETIME show, in terms of not just canon content but cast & crew interaction and creativity in fandom, and dismiss it entirely because it did not cater to your specific fucking tastes! like! the hypercriticism of queer media makes me want to gnaw my own arm off. this show is fucking *precious.* there is NOTHING ELSE LIKE IT ON OUR TELEVISION SCREENS! you don't have to like it. but don't tell me it's not good. fuck off.
