he was different. something in his eyes had changed, she’d spent long enough watching him, tracking him, knowing him. she knew the little shifts in him, and she knew that something along the way had pushed him too far over the edge. like she’d felt his pain a million miles away fom wherever he had found himself. he was different but he still spoke with a voice that eased the tension built up in every muscle, unwound her. for someone she knew to be simmering with rage, he was the most calming presence in any room. even now, after all this time.
“ something tells me he’ll turn up here like he always does – but no. not not yet. were you with him? ” a frown creased her forehead, she felt a tickle of envy. thor had managed to find him, but thor was a god and she was just a human, broken in two a long time ago, something which never could’ve found him. they’d seen so much since he left. a war amongst friends, betrayal after revelation, secrets unburied and lies choking them, vines around their necks. she couldn’t help but smile a moment. “ i don’t know if it was better or worse down here… ”
a pause. “ wait – EARTH. you weren’t on earth? ” it was all she could assume from his words, and the idea of bruce exposed to something unearthly made her skin crawl with anxiety. who was there to talk her down? it was a responsibility she didn’t take lightly, it was her hand pressed tiny to the hulk’s and the knowledge that he voice could remind him that bruce banner was in there somewhere, fighting his way back to her.
❝ yes... well—— not INTENTIONALLY. he didn’t come with me. sort of... ran head-first into the hulk. ❞ ( yeah, no kidding. ) && under the widow’s surveillance he is able to find a foreign tranquility. not the burden of scrutiny beneath microscopes clutched by the rest of the world. no TORCHES and pitchforks... but compassion. a RECIPROCAL one. elusive, yet tangible. one that has followed them both, creating tolerance and dripping warmth in various shades of green and RED, since that very first night back in the streets of KOLKATA. he’d prefer they go back to then, instead of the seventies, were it a possibility more than a mere illusion // pipe dream. take it back, do it all differently, for her. for them. && despite the peace she brings, inwardly he’s still heaving through CORRUPTED lungs. bruce knows he has his own self to blame for that—— all his chances swim like sinking ships in the tumultuous tides of their UNCERTAINTY. of something that should have been solid... instead, he drowns, withdrawing, hands lingering, void of purpose in vacant air, rejecting the urge to reach out. not yet... who knows what she’s been through ?? or who she’s been through it with ?? chances are she doesn’t care anymore. ( LIAR. excuse, excuse, excuse. ) still. not yet.
❝ SAKAAR. they’re a little more, uh... primal, up there. wasn’t sure if i was ever going to make it out. i just recently caught up to speed... when i woke up, the only thing i could think of was—— ❞ seeing you. ❝ coming home. didn’t expect it to be under... THESE exact circumstances, but... you get what you give, i guess. ❞ at the mention of ‘these’, he gestures, a dull nod in the direction of the mansion, the four-dozen superheroes who INHABIT it, and of course, the time period. ( yup, you get what you give, that’s for sure. and, at his core, all bruce had ever given any planet was, essentially, DESTRUCTION && RUIN. ) he wonders, now, what he would say if he were brave enough. less limited by the restraints of himself, of the DROVES of people hovering yards away.
he does it anyway... damn it, banner. lets his GUARD down, inhibitions to the wind ( at least, as much as he can for the moment ) enough to relax his stance, lean in, soak up her air. a beat of silence, and then, perhaps too CAPTIVATED to think properly, whispers, low and fragile. ❝ you okay, nat ?? i was worried about you... a lot. are we... are we GOOD ?? ❞
