Doña Sebastiana

Sabrina & Corina by Kali Fajardo-Anstine shares any new viewer what its like from her eyes and others. During the first chapter titled “Sugar Babies” I was quickly drawn in when the young boys accidently dug up some bones near their town. Further long within the chapter, it was Robbie and his visions that drew in my inspiration for this final work. When Robbie was explaining how he wasn’t scared when he discovered the bones but more so scared of the skeleton lady that was at the foot of hid bed one night. His grandmother explained that he might have seen Doña Sebastiana. In other words, lady reaper. I went and did some more research about this lady reaper and found out that  … “She is more a symbol of mortality and penance, a bleak reminder of our fragile and sinful state. The Aztec figure known as the “Lady of the Dead,” presided over such celebrations…”* This lady reaper is known for protection and watches over those who need it. With this notion I wanted to create what I would think Doña Sebastiana would look like. I also wanted to incorporate some natural Colorado elements.

If I were to take more time on this piece, I would mess around some more with watercolor. It is a hard element and I feel like I could have done better for the boarder and her head piece/hair. I also wish my photos would have picked up on the gold highlights more then presenting them in a pale yellow tone. Over all I am pleased with this outcome and Happy to finish strong.

It was an interesting semester, but I am happy to be apart of this class and still be able to see everyone’s work. I hope everyone enjoys their break and stays safe. (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ*:･ﾟ✧ *:･ﾟ✧ *:･ﾟ✧ *:･ﾟ✧ *:･ﾟ✧

I love this piece! I love that you researched Doña Sebastiana and I’m glad I got to learn more about her. Using the blue Columbine, Colorado’s state flower, was an excellent touch. I really loved how very “Colorado” this book was. The Author proves that she knows alot about every corner of our state!

The inspiration for my project based on the book Sabrina and Corina was the story titled Sisters. I was moved to create an artwork on this specific story because I appreciated the way the women stayed authentic to themselves. Throughout the story they were challenged to conform to the norms of women in America. With it being the 50’s and the women being Latina, they felt a struggle with fitting in. This book has a strong feminine tone which is something that I wanted to shine through in my project.

I decided to do a collage with clippings from a women’s mental health magazine. I clipped out pieces with complementary colors and decided to piece them together into a flower. For me this was to represent of female power that was shown throughout the entire book. You can also see in my color palette choice that I used a lot of pinks and earthtones to support my feminine notion. Along with this I also went in with a gold paint pen to add some shimmer and shine to the project. I think this gives it an extra feminine touch. On top of the flower and collage borders I decided to put quotes that spoke to me as a woman. These tie in really well with Sabrina and Corina because throughout all of the stories women were face with several challenges that they had to overcome. I also wanted to show how the women stay authentic to themselves, specifically in the story Sisters. One of the quotes that I used is, “honoring your inner voice and the things that bring you joy “. I like this quote because it aligns with the attitude that women need to be free to do what makes them happy and not conform to the standards of society. In the story Sisters one of the women was perfectly content with not getting married or having kids, which is something that I thought was brave especially in this time period. Overall, when you look at my artwork I hope you can feel the strong sense of feminine equality and the need to speak for yourself.

Great choice of quotes! Your use of color is astounding. The negative space and use of the women’s health magazine really help mirror the tone and theme of “Sisters”.

Artist Statement: Sabrina and Corina project

               There was a lot to process when choosing a specific story for my project.  I did not know exactly what story to pick so I chose a little of all of them.   So many of the stories resonated with me and made me reflect on my own experiences and stories.   Some of the stories I could apply to me, and some to my family members and friends.   The overall message I took away from each story was that of trauma. We all have experienced some sort of trauma that was portrayed in these stories in one way or another, so people in more ways than others.  

               So, the theme I chose for my collage is trauma and the post-traumatic growth that people experience after as part of healing. While there are no exact symbols for trauma, during my research I kept coming across the symbol of healing and symbols that represent calm, strength, and feelings.  Whether you associate it with the red cross, or Greek cross, or the symbol for first aid, they are all symbols of healing.  I feel like although every story had a strong meaning and a common theme of trauma, in the end was some sort of process of healing, moving on, or even becoming a better person.  This overarching post-traumatic growth in the short stories is meaningful to me because it shows that when faced with adversity people can choose to thrive. There is a lot to be said for someone standing up after a trauma to become a better person and reengaging with life in a fulfilling way.

This book features the many kinds of loss that can be experienced in life. The loss of loved ones, the loss of home, and the loss of innocence to name a few. Your project really captures those themes with the missing child poster, the racist sign, and the fact that the piece as a whole reminds me of a roadside memorial.

Final Project: Sabrina and Corina

I based my final project on the project three assignment module – music video / supercut. The story from the book that I based my final project off was the title story, Sabrina and Corina. There is an early scene in the story where Corina reminiscences about a conversation between the two cousins in which Sabrina asks Corina what is her first memory in the entire world. The story itself has some sad and dark undertones as Corina, who is assisting the mortician with Sabrina’s funeral makeup, reflects on Sabrina’s complicated life and her relationship with her. Because I myself and seeking lightness as well as momentary escapes from the reality in which we live, I chose to reframe this reflective scene in more of a dreamy way, where instead of remembering the full story with the lightness and the dark, I wanted focus on the more serene aspects of the mountains that Corina remembers her and Sabrina visiting. I set the video clips to Thom York’s Suspirium, which I felt helped set the mood for the short video.

Fantastic video! You did a great job capturing the tone of that story. The footage in the beginning is alot like what I picture the town of Saguarita looks like that is mentioned a few times in the book.

Art Project 5: Cheesman Park

I chose to do my piece based on the story “Cheesman Park”. The story is about how emotional pain can have the same kind of hold on a person as physical pain.  Liz, her mother, and Monica have all experienced different kinds of trauma that they hold onto. Monica’s pain of losing her husband sends her down a path of self-destruction. The first time she meets Liz she even admits to almost attempting suicide. Liz’s mom still holds onto the pain of her abusive husband and doesn’t let anyone else get too close. Liz’s pain from the trauma she experienced in California is visible by the bruises on her face. When Liz’s mom is talking to Liz about Monica she says,”’Age has nothing to do with sadness’”. This is represented by the age gap between the three women. I incorporated various elements of pivotal plot moments in my collage.

Reading Response 5:Sabrina and Corina

Sabrina and Corina is a series of short stories that all revolve around the theme of loss.  The stories all of the story’s protagonists are Hispanic women and tackles topics of trauma, addiction, abuse, poverty, misogyny, and death. The story that resonated the most with me was the titular story, Sabrina and Corina. The story starts off as Corina and her family prepare for Sabrina’s funeral as Sabrina had been strangled to death. Corina is a makeup artist, and when her Grandmother asks her to help prepare Sabrina’s corpse for the funeral, Corina has to get close to her cousin that she once pushed away.  Sabrina and Corina were cousins and best friends from a young age. Sabrina slowly watched her cousin fall into a life of alcoholism and despair.  This story resonated with me because addiction runs in my family, and I have lost loved ones (literally and figuratively) to drugs and destructive lifestyles.  Corina sees Sabrina throw her life away, and doesn’t know what to do other than watch and stay away. Sabrina’s last words to Corina are “‘you can have that memory if you want’”, a reference to Corina’s first memory of being stung by a bee, which Sabrina claimed to actually be her memory. Ultimately Sabrina will be forgotten, only heaped together with other lost loved ones who died tragically. The only saving grace is that Corina can choose to remember a happier version of Sabrina, one that is beautiful and full of life. My favorite story was “Cheeseman Park”. Not only because of my fond memories of going to Cheeseman park growing up, but because the story shows how grief can drastically alter a person’s actions. The story shows how pain, both physical and emotional, take tolls on a person’s life. 

I’m a person who loves a happy or hopeful ending. Most (if not arguably all) of the stories in Sabrina and Corina end on fairly sorrowful notes. That being said I still enjoyed the stories. Kali Fajardo-Anstine is a fantastic author, and it’s rare that I read fiction that is Colorado-based.  I got a kick out of the references. I was especially stoked when I read the story “Remedies” that described Harrison’s home as an apartment off of Grant St, in downtown Denver, because I used to live in an apartment in the same area. I imaged my old neighborhood while I read. Overall the book is a great quick read with fantastic views on the more somber parts of life, and I have already suggested it to friends.

Ariella’s Deep Breaths

Breathing is an involuntary, automatic, and biological response of everyone’s body. One does not survive without it. Time only moves forward. The inhale is only followed by the exhale, in and out, over and over again. Repeating until the end of one’s physical time. Take time to turn this vital bodily function into a voluntary, (say) manual, and controlled internal movement, make it a point of focus, a point of return, a stable base - breathing is our haven to thrive rather than just survive. It is so basic in nature, yet so complex and crucial to one’s health. These are mental health reminders; to inhale the present moment, and exhale to the next present moment. To take a deep breath.

           Randomly over the past couple of weeks I have recorded myself taking a single deep breath, with this performance art project in mind. My lungs are charred with carcinogens from being a former smoker and not leading a healthy youth lifestyle, let alone the pollution and poor air quality we live in. I took for granted my inherent ability to breath, but I choose now to practice breathing deeply, taking control of my body’s health at the basis of my own molecular levels. Through practices such as yoga, meditation, and physical training I am learning to breathe consciously, to use my breath as a tool for recovery, physically and mentally. The Deep Breaths shown in my performance are the ones I took consciously without practice. My reminders that I am completely alive. Some were silly, some felt awkward, some were forced but they all did the same thing for me in those moments. They centered me, and they got me closer to the next present moment.

Awesome idea and fantastic execution. I can relate to having taken breathing for granted. I also used to be a heavy smoker and didn’t realize how much it affected my breathing until I quit. This project also reminds me of I book I finished recently called “Breath” by James Nestor. The book analyses how important monitoring your breathing is, and how life changing proper technique can be.

One Minute:

For my one minute project i felt like I should do something that i am experienced in and can accomplish under one minute. I chose to do a task at my job, Chicken-N-Spice. Being a shift manager i have many duties in the front line and the back line. This task of making our signature and famous chicken cheese fries is done in our back. I cut up the chicken into bite sized chunks and then drizzle our creamy and rich american cheese over the top of the potato wedges. Adding the 2 together topping it off with a cup of jalapeños. This was a very fun project becuase it allows the artist to create something they enjoy and something they know.

I’ve worked in kitchens since I was a teenager and I love that you used your job as an outlet for your art. Using what you know to create is the cornerstone of the creative process.

Art Project 4: One Minute Performance

I was inspired to do this performance by a piece by performance artist Marina Abramović, and the current state of the world. Marina Abramović is a performance artist known for her strange and provocative performances. One of Abramović’s LEAST intense performance was a video of her eating a raw onion whole. I decided that my version of this would be to chug a glass of milk. While a lot of you probably drink milk all the time, I HATE it. That being said, as far as uncomfortable things to do/drink/eat in front of the camera, this isn’t that bad. I recorded the video in slow motion and borrowed a strobe light to help show every frame of my lighthearted discomfort. As far as my second inspiration, I originally was going to make a very serious political piece but stopped halfway through recording. The world has already been so serious since March, and I’ve had enough politics this month. It felt good to make a simple, incredibly silly piece of art as a change of pace. thanks to COVID I also just got laid off from my job at a vegan restaurant, so chugging a glass of 2% felt like a small act of vindictiveness. Hope you enjoy!

Supercut project: Woman

I created this project with ideas, objects, expectations, associations, & symbols that I relate to my experience of womanhood/femininity and a glimpse of others’ ideas.  It would be incredible to have a larger scope of diversity in personal experiences and connections, but I was limited on time.  These are concepts of my own and some ideas I got from one of my friends.  I came up with this idea because I was thinking about how so many women have different backgrounds that shape the idea of what being a woman means to them.  We share a lot of experiences in womanhood, but there are a lot of other aspects like culture, religion, race, socio economic status, sexuality, gender identity, etc that have an impact on our view of what being a woman represents. 

Overall, this was my first time making my own video on premiere pro aside from the technical exercise video.  I’m pretty happy with how it turned out and it was fun to learn the software better.

Art Project 3: Love Your Existence

Artist Statement

For this project I wanted to create a relaxing and philosophical short work of video art. I chose to focus on nature, mainly aerial footage, because I thought it lended itself well to the subject content. The audio is from an artist named @MoStFeAr, which also featured the lecture by Alan Watts. It was a much longer clip that I trimmed down to include the most poignant section of the track. I wanted to focus on ephemeral forces of nature that complimented the subject of human existence. Birth and death are the main components of both the audio and visuals, which I thought were represented well in each of the selected clips. I hope Watt’s ideas captivated you and the video complimented his brilliant and profound words. Works cited is located in the description.

Art Project 3: Super Cut

Title: michael reeves tazing people for a minute straight

This was probably the most fun I’ve ever had editing a video in the few months that I’ve been doing it. I didn’t have issues while I was editing but I had a lot of issues with coming up with a theme. In the video I put together I decided to make the theme tazing. It sounds weird at first but seeing how creative Michael Reeves is with engineering objects to taze people (mostly himself) with. Michael Reeves is a YouTuber that I enjoy watching mostly because he knows how to make engineering and programing look interesting. I’ve been having issues getting in the creative spirit and his videos have been helping a lot lately.

This was fun to watch. There is something about seeing other people in self-inflicted pain that is quite amusing. There seems to be a general progression of more pain to more people as your video plays! I would totally play a game of taser tag! haha

Art Project 3

The Art of Drifting

If you haven’t been following my recent posts, you can tell I’m a fan of cars but in this video it’s about the “Art of Drifting” and drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers and the car loses traction but the driver is maintaining control and is driving the car throughout the corner. I love drifting because my favorite car movie (Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift) which I’ve made GIFs on basically started my love for this sport. This video represents the “Art of Drifting” perfectly in my opinion which why I chose it and hopefully it demonstrates to you how a driving technique can become an art of motorsport.

Love it.  We have similar interests in cars and racing.  I haven’t seen all of ken blocks videos but if this a mix of them all you did a good job making it look like a single video.   Feel like you could have thrown in a fade out so it just didn’t come to an abrupt end though.

The Other History of Intercultural Performance Coco Fusco

There were alot of extremely interesting topics discussed in Coco Fusco’s analysis of the history of public performance in relation to her “golden cages” performance art with Guillermo Gomez-Pena. I found her analysis of the public’s view of Christopher Columbus and how he was a “smokescreen, a malleable icon to be trotted out by the mainstream for its attacks on ‘Political correctness’” extremely insightful. I remember in elementary school first learning about the false and glorified version of Columbus. Shortly after it became more and more acceptable for people to talk about how incorrect the history of Columbus was, and how many horrific acts he committed against the indigenous population. When Fusco delved deeper into the golden cages act, I was extremely surprised about how people reacted to the performance. The idea that people believed that the performance itself was offensive, while missing the point that the treatment of indigenous peoples is horrific, is extremely frustrating.

Roselee Goldberg "Performance: A Hidden History"

The art of performance is difficult to categorize because of its ability to blend with any medium. Performance can be incorporated into poetry, literature, music, theatre, painting, and practically any other art form. Performance art has also historically contained many avante-garde pieces that divert from any grouping or era.  One of the reasons that performance art is not historically well recorded is its inability to be kept in a museum. Goldberg cites the Futurists, the constructivists, the Dadaists, and the Surrealists as groups that attempted to revolutionize performance art throughout history. The futurists used performance art as a way to showcase political turmoil and eventual political decline that would eventually cause WWI. Dadaists also came together due to WWI. They used cabaret as a “neutral retreat for conscientious objectors to the war”. Dadaism often appeals to humor and the absurd, so performance art was ultimately a perfect dadaist medium.
