Photo Manipulations by Ellen Jantzen
Ellen Jantzen was born and raised in St. Louis Missouri. Her first college degree was in graphic arts. In 1992, after a move to LA California, she graduated The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising with an advanced degree in fashion. She worked for several years at Mattel Toy Company, but became disillusioned with the corporate world and longed for a more creative outlet.
Having been trained in computer design, she set about to learn Photoshop. As digital technology advanced and cameras were producing an excellent resolution, she found her perfect medium. It was a true confluence of technical advancements and creative desire that culminated in her current explorations in the photo-inspired art using both a camera to capture images and a computer to alter and manipulate the pieces. Dark Depictions by Alex Kuno
Minneapolis-based artist Alex Kuno composes surrealistic scenes that depict an entangled mess of flora and fauna.
The graphic designer uses ink, watercolor, chalk and graphite to illustrate bizarre subject matter in some dark, twisted plot, in what may seem like an eccentric dream. While his use of vibrant colors does evoke a sense of intrigue about his creation, the unsettling juxtaposition might even make many uncomfortable about Kuno’s pieces. However, he does not mean to induce uneasiness; rather the illustrator aims to portray the concept of life and growth and, how the two are interlinked, through his visual depiction. According to Kuno’s website, “The kaleidoscopic compositions are by turns whimsical and melancholic, tinged with both nostalgia and a sense of the macabre.”
