“Why would you stop in hell?” has changed my brain chemistry

You are always righteous, LORD, when I bring a case before You. Yet I would speak with You about Your justice: Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all the faithless live at ease? Jeremiah 12:1

Like prophet Jeremiah, many of us going through tough times have asked God this question. What was God's response to the prophet? “If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses?” (Jeremiah 12:5)

God was categorically stating that, "the journey was going to get tougher, and he needed to endure and stay strong." What looked to Jeremiah like opposition was actually preparation.

Sometimes, the race we are called to run leaves us weary and breathless. Through it all, God is strengthening your spiritual muscle. He knows your pain. He sees your faithfulness and your stumbling. But one day you will have the stamina to run with horses. Jesus will use you to do great exploits for His kingdom. Long nights of sighing and mourning will turn to rejoicing.

For I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. Philippians 4:11

This verse shows us that contentment is not a natural trait. Therefore it needs to be cultivated. The apostle Paul had to learn it and cultivate it. And when at last he had attained it, he could say, "I have learned in whatsoever situation I am to be content," remember he was old and grey when he penned it, in the dungeon.

Contentment is often wrought through painful discipline —by focusing on God’s sovereignty rather than material gain. It means trusting God’s provision, reducing selfish desires, and finding satisfaction in Jesus alone.

Prayer:

Lord, teach me the secret of being content in every situation—whether in plenty or in want. I surrender my desire for more to You, and I choose to trust in Your provision today. Thank you that I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Sometimes, it seems like we really don't matter. It seems that our contributions are small, and the difference we may make in someone else's life, or the world in general, is pretty insignificant. In Psalm 8 David writes, "O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth. When I consider the heavens, the work of Your fingers, what is man, that You are mindful of him?"

I am overwhelmed by the fact that in light of the whole creation, God is still mindful of us. He still cares. He has crowned us with glory and honour and has given us dominion over the works of His hands and has put all things under our feet. You and I are most special among all of creation.

And, when you begin to think you don't matter to anyone, remember you matter to Jesus - you are precious in His sight!
