"amateur", Borrowed from French amateur, from Latin amātor (“lover”), from amāre (“to love”).

The word used to be used to refer to someone who loved something. An amateur is merely someone attached to a particular pursuit who does not engage in it professionally.

One might even call an amateur who does something because they love doing it.

This is exactly what I was getting at. Amateur is used as an insult when it really comes from a word that literally means to do something for the love of it, and there's something so nice about that.
