1. Castiel is actually guilty of beating Dean numerous times on screen.

John left Dean and Sam.

2. Castiel abandoned Dean and Sam while they were unconscious at a park in the middle of the night.

All theses haters here really can’t tell the difference between head canon and actual canon. I don't actually think John Winchester held out for 80 years in Hell. I think Alistair knew exactly what buttons to push that would hurt Dean the most, and telling him "You couldn't live up to your father. Wouldn't he be so disappointed?" is like the mother of all buttons for Dean. His entire life and personality, everything he has ever done, had been for John (and Sam, but in different ways)

So of course Alistair would use that against him. "Daddy's little girl, he broke. He broke in 30. Just not the man your father wanted you to be, huh?"

But I think John broke too. And I think he broke way sooner than Dean. I think he lasted a few years at the most, and then he took Alistair's deal and picked up a knife... and nothing happened. He didn't break the seal because he wasn't a righteous man.

After Mary died, John lived his entire life for vengeance. Not for the love for his children who he nearly got killed several times, not for saving people which was only secondary to killing the monsters. He carried out his life selfishly, not righteously. So he couldn't break the seal.

John didn’t break because he knew what was planned for his boys. So, the angels and demons went with plan ‘”D” for Dean. The seal had to be broken by a Winchester to kick start the Apocalypse.
