In Critiquing, Analyzing, and even Criticizing Fictional Media. Let’s go. Because apparently we freaking need this.
An example of a bad critique:
Why it’s bad: To quote wikipedia, citation needed. It’s one thing to accuse a company of being [insert whatever form] of problematic, but unless you can include specific examples, it means nothing.Â
I’m not going to say citation needed every time someone says something is ___ist, mind. If it’s a real life person talking about the form of oppression they face and saying this is ____ist because of that, yeah, real life is your citation. Since we’re talking about fictional media, however, real life doesn’t count as a source in the same way.Â
Examples of better critiques:
Why is this better? Because it specifically cites the lack of canon diverse sexualities as a problem.
Another example of a better critique:
It specifically cites Desiree and her feelings towards Zoe as a problem issue.
Why it’s bad: It’s completely disregarding and erasing canon. You know who else in the main recruitable main characters is Asian? Nishan. Because the quest about their family trees establishes him as Indian which, guess what, is in Asia. (Asia being an entire continent, not just China, Japan, and Korea.) Even before we had that quest, he was coded as Asian. His face in the game files is literally called “Asian”. (Sakura’s is called “Asian 1″, btw. Oh look, more obvious coding.) His name is either Indian or Armenian in origin. (Armenia being in west Asia.) If you’re trying to make a point about racial representation in the game, maybe double check these things first.
Specifically cites Ezra’s lack of quest focus as a potential problem. There you go, that’s how you talk about racial representation in the game.Â
Did we learn something like this? Eh, doesn’t matter. Confessors gonna confess, I guess.Â
