I must say there are some changes from the book (I’m about three quarters in, so I’m not finished yet) and some of my fav scenes in the book didn’t make it into the series! and my poor husband was scared for life (his words, not mine lol) during a scene showing the sisters getting ready for the Netherfield ball where we see Mary wash her underarms and she has some impressive arm hair! I know it’s time period accurate but a little jarring to see (and to be honest I don’t know if I can ever watch a period piece again without thinks “all the women have arms hair!”) and must’ve taken some commitment on the actress’s part! That’s dedication to the role and accuracy! And as warning for viewers with younger children, I could’ve done without the intro portion that heavily alluded to Mr. & Mrs. Bennet’s early matrimonial relations… Nothing was really shown, but heavily implied. Wished I had know so I could’ve skipped that bit

I actually took screenshots of the absolute HORROR that is a woman with body hair and I would like to note that I didn't even notice her un-shaved armpits because I was being happy about the lack of torture lace-ups on her stays.

Oh no! A woman with mild body hair! I can never look at the world the same way again!

i really really need the fatal unpleasantness at netherfield to come out already because i NEED to know if my elopement theory will come true. ever since i read the last chapter of the rushworth family plot i kept thinking “they’re pushing these kids too far, if they keep doing that they are going to run away together”, but i thought that was just me wanting the most dramatic solution HOWEVER the more i read the previews and summaries and advanced reader reviews the more i’m convinced that jonathan and juliet are going to elope or at least try to elope. like there’s no way that the “final choice between respectability and love” is not about them eloping.

also this might be why claudia gray changed juliet’s age (she’s 17 in the murder of mr. wickham so she should be around 20 during the fatal unpleasantness, but instead it is mentioned several times in the rushworth family plot that she is 18 and still a little too young to marry) the inconsistency was driving me crazy, but i think that if she was 20 then she could just wait until the following year and marry in england (maybe without her parents approval but she wouldnt need their legal consent). them eloping makes a lot more sense if she is 18 and oh my god they are going to elope these last few weeks before the book comes out are going to be eternal

actually yeah whatever im going to start posting more about the mr darcy and miss tilney series because we are a month away from the new book can we talk about the beef between mr darcy and mr tilney because i think it is the funniest thing to come out of that series

like mr darcy essentially met the male version of his wife (at the place where he first proposed to his wife btw) and he immediately decided he did NOT like him and did NOT want his daughter to marry his son. and mr tilney knowing that mr darcy does not like him and making it worse on purpose for the laughs (and because he also did not want juliet to marry jonathan because he did not want her to join a family where she would not be unconditionally loved and how much of that do you think came from seeing his own father scorning his wife when she was but a young girl the same age their daughter now is)

their dynamic is so much fun and so interesting, like when they disagree on whether elders should be automatically respected and it all boils down to the fact that mr darcy idolized his father and mr tilney grew up knowing that his father was a cruel man. im so sad that we didnt get more shenanigans from them in the perils of lady catherine de bourgh i need a collection of one shots of just them annoying each other. they’re going to be so funny when they do become family, i hope that the bigger misunderstandings between them dissipate but i know that they will be so competitive on being the favorite grandpa

Is it ridiculous to make 8 memes about like two minor lines in Persuasion? Yes. Am I very proud of myself? Yes.

I would only argue that those are not minor lines. Anne if she married Wentworth would be marrying into his family. Which was important--"The apple doesn't fall from the tree" and the concept of "bad seed" vs. "good breeding" were taken as near universal truths at the time in the genteel class . So a woman putting her life, her property, and her children into the power of a husband from an unknown family was taking a risk. Especially for Anne, who couldn't count on her father to be willing or able to protect her.

Showing Wentworth's brother-in-law as a man who would accept direction and correction from his wife, and Wentworth's sister as a woman who expects that sort of respect from her husband, is no small thing! He was raised with a sister who expects respect, suggesting that their father respected and cared for their mother. He had the good example of Admiral Croft for a significant part of his military career. His brother was married and a clergyman. Despite lack of inherited wealth or living parents, he comes from a "good family".

Am I over-analyzing two minor lines in Persuasion? Yes, yes I am!

Look, if I can over-meme those lines you can over-analyze them! 🤝 I respect it! 👏 Like, I think the point that that bit makes, which you have explained so well, is made by other glimpses of the Crofts, so it wouldn't change anything materially if this detail was cut and Sophia never took the reins—she holds them figuratively at other points, and the Admiral never objects—but it's utterly delightful, so it can never be minor in my heart 💕

Darcy starts as a Mean Girl

The word “meanly” appears exactly three times in P&P. First when describing the Bingley sisters:

They were rather handsome, had been educated in one of the first private seminaries in town, had a fortune of twenty thousand pounds, were in the habit of spending more than they ought, and of associating with people of rank; and were therefore in every respect entitled to think well of themselves, and meanly of others.

The second and third times are during Darcy’s post proposal confession:

As a child I was taught what was right, but I was not taught to correct my temper. I was given good principles, but left to follow them in pride and conceit. Unfortunately an only son (for many years an only child), I was spoilt by my parents, who, though good themselves (my father, particularly, all that was benevolent and amiable), allowed, encouraged, almost taught me to be selfish and overbearing; to care for none beyond my own family circle; to think meanly of all the rest of the world; to wish at least to think meanly of their sense and worth compared with my own.

Jane Austen does not use words carelessly, especially since this only appears three times. Darcy starts the book very close to Caroline (and Louisa), making fun of the vulgar Bennets in a little mean girl squad. The point of the novel is that he moves away from that way of thinking after Elizabeth rejects his first proposal.
