The summer was nearly over and Iâd escaped to the forest nestling in a tree outside Azuchi. Things would change soon, I would have to pickâŠ
I was a coward, so weak⊠Stuck between both sides, wanting to protect both but⊠that was impossible.
Tears blurred my vision, running down my cheeks. What should I do? I couldnât do nothing and yet I wanted to.
Out here I was alone, Iâd always been alone. Iâd faked friendships with them all trying to distance myself, I was hurting enough, I didnât want to add to it.
Footsteps padded along the ground. I sat up, trying to see through my tear soaked eyes; they dropped now down below.
I scrunched my eyes shut. It was her.
I tried to slip away, I couldnât bring her into this mess.
As she stepped, the ground erupted in light, fireflies burst up and up and up into the sky, dancing, sparkling, glittering around me. I reached out and they slipped between my fingers.
A face peeked up over the branch, barely able to reach where I was sat. âRanmaru. What are you doing out here alone?â
Her soft hand reached out and took mine, and I looked at her, face illuminated with the light of the fireflies.
