You stand from your chair, stretching your stiff and aching back. Quickly packing up your materials, you softy laugh at your friend loudly whining. “That was probably the most boring class in all of history.”
“I agree.” Your other friend follows closely behind. “How can he enjoy chemistry that much to be able to talk about it for an hour straight? Chemistry isn’t that fun.”
She suddenly stopped in front of you, causing you to bump into her. “Not too much. Gaon likes chemistry!” Her voice was sickeningly sweet, and you could’ve sworn there were hearts floating above her head. This made your other friend laugh and gently shove her ahead of you.
Shortly, her laughter died down. “You and your crush on that kid…. You’re the one who brought it up first!”
“As if your crush on Jungsu is any better!” You shook your head, silently laughing as the two began to bicker about whose crush on a set of friends is worse. Honestly, they were a bit loud with their bickering considering that it’s supposed to be a ‘secret.’ You just hoped they wouldn’t ask you.
All hopes are thrown out of the window when both turned their attention toward you. At the same time, they both pointed accusatory fingers at you, speaking in unison. “Who do you have a crush on?“
You avoided their eyes, very obviously attempting to avoid the question. This only makes them press further, taking that as a sign that you, in fact, do have a crush on someone. Which is true—of course, it is. But if you told them, you’d never hear the end of it. God, why is the walk to the cafeteria so far?
“Junhan…” you whispered softly. So softly that they asked you to repeat yourself because they didn’t hear you. Pulling the sleeves of the hoodie you were wearing over your hands, you took a deep breath. You spoke again, this time a little louder. “Junhan…. Han Hyeongjun. That’s who I like.”
You didn’t have to look at them to know they shared a look with each other. They both reached a comforting hand out to pat your back. It was obvious why; everyone knows him as the guy who doesn’t talk to anyone. Even his closest friends had to lovingly force their way in his life. But you simply brushed their hands off and covered your warm face.
“I can put in a good word for you, you know. I can talk to Gaon if you’d like.” Speak of the devil. She noticed Gaon sitting at a table upon entering the cafeteria and immediately ran over to him, leaving you and your other friend to follow behind. They filled in a few empty seats, which left you to sit in the last one. Beside Junhan.
It seemed deliberate with the way your friends both wiggled their eyebrows at you. You sighed and slowly sat next to him, attempting to keep your space and not raise any suspicions. He didn’t have to look up to know it was you sitting down. Out of the corner of his eye he saw the very outfit he’d seen you in that morning, and the familiar smell of your perfume confirmed it was you. Part of him visibly relaxes as you settle into the seat beside him, while you get visibly more nervous. Although they weren’t paying too much attention to you, you couldn’t help but feel on edge.
How long until they find out? They wouldn’t stop teasing you if they did. Thoughts kept swimming in your mind, so much so that you hadn’t noticed you’d zoned out staring at your lunch or that you started fidgeting.
Junhan, on the other hand, noticed you picking your fingers. He, too, was staring at the table and he could see right past it where you nervously fidgeted. He reached out for your hand, intertwining your fingers together under the table. The action is so simple, yet it makes your breath catch in your throat. He softly smiles to himself when you squeeze his hand.
You didn’t know it, but your friend whispered in Gaon’s ear something about your crush on Junhan, which makes him look in your direction. At first, the sight of both of you being too shy to exist in each other’s presence was both funny and endearing, but then he noticed the hoodie you were wearing.
“Oh?” He made a shocked noise. “Isn’t that your hoodie, Hyeongjun?”
Everyone at the table turned to you. Their eyes on you, flickering between you and Junhan, made you want the earth to swallow you whole. You could feel your face heating up as they took in every detail of you and Junhan—you apparently wearing his hoodie, how close you were sitting considering everything, and now how he had a soft smile playing on his lips while you were becoming visibly more flustered under their gaze.
Gaon made yet another noise, but not successfully taking the attention back. “No wonder I never saw you wearing it anymore even though it’s your favorite. You gave it to your girlfriend.”
You made a choked sound. Everyone gasped. Although you knew your friends were now whining about you not telling them that Junhan was your boyfriend, you couldn’t hear them as you started to actually choke on your own saliva. It was only now that you realized that in a rush this morning—to be able to meet Junhan for a moment before classes started—you’d forgotten your water bottle at home.
Scrambling to grab your wallet and make a fun for the vending machine, you forgot about Junhan’s grip on your hand. Three loud gasps sounded one after another, your friend raising a hand to point at your joined hands. When you realized, you let out a strangled gasp and quickly dropped his hand as if he burned you. By now, your coughing had subsided, but your throat still burned, making it hard to breathe.
Or maybe it was the nerves creeping up your throat now that they’ve found out.
Either way, the hand that you previously threw away found purchase on your back. Hyeongjun was alternating gently patting your back and rubbing it to make sure you were okay. All while you guys’ friends stared in shock, jaws dropped open.
Finally, Hyeongjun spoke. It was just the simple statement of, “Are you guys trying to catch flies?”
Once it finally settled in, they all closed their mouths, and you thought you’d managed to bypass the teasing you’d get. That is, until he grabbed your hand again. You were now covering your warm face with the sleeves of his hoodie. Hyeongjun reached up, swiftly moved the fabric away and placed his clammy hand in yours. He was just as nervous as you were.
Still, he gathered enough confidence to confirm your relationship status by pulling you again to sit next to him, making sure to pull you extra close. He wasn’t one to be very showy with affection, and you’ve hardly kissed at all, so you knew he wouldn’t kiss you right here, but somehow this felt more intimate. Wearing his hoodie, holding his hand, sitting shoulder-to-shoulder and hip-to-hip—it was a lot for you guys, in the best way possible.
Hyeongjun looked at Gaon. “You’re right.” He let out a shy laugh. “I did give my favorite hoodie to…my favorite person. My girlfriend.”
You could faintly head your friends squealing and stomping their feet excitedly over the loud beating of your heart. Hyeongjun directed his eyes toward you, and the two of you shared a soft smile. Completely overwhelmed with emotions, you tore your eyes away from him and simply rested your forehead on his shoulder. It was out now, you didn’t have to hide the fact that you were dating Han Hyeongjun. It was a huge relief off of your shoulders, and you couldn’t help but smile even bigger.
