Non-con kisses are sexual assaults.
There is some strange things about words.
"He kissed me even if I didn't like it"
"He kissed me when I didn't want it"
"He kissed me without my consent"
"He sexually assaulted me"
They all sound different, don't they?
"He sexually assaulted me" sounds the worst eventhough it's exactly the same as "He kissed me without my consent".
When I say Aang sexually assaulted Katara, people go, "When? Where? I don't remember that".
Words are powerful and it sometimes bring people down to earth and see exactly what's wrong with something that looks innocent.
Sexual assault is a sexual assault. It must never be belittled. The victims mustn't be demonized, blamed or even overlooked.
What's the worst?
She may be looking fine with the first kiss (they didn't talk about it) but the second kiss? (She didn't want to be kissed. She got angry. Also, the conversations before that kiss. Wtf Aang?!)
This is the most obsessive thing I have ever heard.
"If I hadn't blocked my chakra, I'd probably be in the Avatar State right now!"
-Aang, the Avatar.
(He means the idea of Zutara is what makes him angry a.k.a Katara being with someone else than him is not tolerable. HE OWNS KATARA 🙄)
And Katara is literally oblivious because she thought he only hated the play because... I don't know... at least didn't think Aang meant it that way.
"We kissed at the invasion, and I thought we were going to be together. But we're not"
-Aang, the Avatar.
(1. You kissed her without her consent. Just because she didn't talk about it afterwards, it doesn't mean anything like she wanted it.
2. Just because YOU kissed her, that doesn't mean you're going to be together. It's wrong)
"Why don't you know?"
"Well, when is the right time?"
-Aang, the Avatar.
(Should I even explain this part? 😶)
Also, Aang DIDN'T try to kiss Katara. He kissed her.
*Sighs* And considering kids will watch the show and copy Aang is enough to make me go mad.
(Think about kids learning "it's right to kiss a girl even if she doesn't want it because she will kiss you after that") 🙂
As a person who still suffers from sexual assault (unwanted touch and some unwanted shows), I have no idea what to say, even.
This is my response, tho.
You literally called aang an incel and constantly mock him, how do you not hate him.
well yknow if it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck... you are actually allowed to call it a duck.
aang kisses katara without asking for consent. aang nods when katara is called "the avatar's girl" in the ember island play, even though at this point they are not in an established romantic relationship. aang gets so angry at a satirized version of katara showing romantic interest in someone else that he outright says he would've gone into the avatar state if not for his blocked chakras. aang demands to know why katara won't enter a relationship with him. aang kisses katara without her consent, again, even though she has just explicitly said that she's confused. aang never apologizes for any of this.
that is exactly the sort of toxic, possessive, and entitled behaviour that characterizes an incel.
and that infuriates me, because book 1 and 2 aang - whose crush on katara was shy and harmless, who wore flower crowns and made necklaces and never once cared about gender roles - would never have acted this way. it's the writers who turned him into an incel and never had him learn and do better, and it is that very writing i am criticizing when i criticize aang. i truly don't know how much clearer i can make this.
loving a character doesn't mean that you never acknowledge their flaws, or missteps in how they were written. i love azula, zuko and katara, but i have discussed all of their flaws on this blog at one point or another. that's just what it means to engage critically with the media you consume. and sure, i criticize aang the most, but that's because out of everyone in atla, he got done the dirtiest when it came to his character arc.
ultimately, it doesn't matter what i say about aang, because it's never going to hurt him. he isn't real. but the messages about appropriate behaviour in romantic relationships that are being imparted through his character (in the latter half of book 3 particularly) to impressionable young children? those very much are.
and they need to be better.
It's common knowledge that Zuko and Aang, throughout the duration of ATLA, are a mirror of one another; a reflection of each other - not necessarily opposites but parallels.
So whilst I was analyzing the finale of the show, I noticed a really interesting parallel between our two protagonists:
Zuko was close to dying in his final confrontation with Azula and what pulled him back up, what saved him from dying was water. More necessarily Katara's healing abilities - but nonetheless, his opposing element saved his life.
On the other hand, Aang throughout his harrowing fight against Ozai utilizes Earthbending time and time again to save himself, techniques that we've come to associate with Toph (rock armor and seismic sense). And to access the Avatar State, that had since been blocked, Earth had been the ultimate catalyst to unlocking his Seventh Chakra.
And if we take into consideration what Guru Pathik told Aang - to unlock the Seventh Chakra he would have to let go of Katara. In a sense, this could have been a visual representation of how Aang lets go of his love for Katara, and how Toph (Earth) could take up that role.
Earth, his opposing Element, saves his life.
It's also interesting that our protagonists' conclusions and destinies are integrally tied to the aforementioned girls. Destiny and Fate are two major themes in ATLA, alonside the moral lesson shared to us by Uncle Iroh about the unity of the four elements and how each element can learn and grow from the other.
Zuko's destiny to bring honor to Fire Nation whilst also challenging his conflicting natures (Sozin vs. Roku; Ozai/Azula vs. Iroh) would have never come into fruition had it not been for Katara. Katara was the first person (other than his Uncle) to show him genuine compassion and humanity, she was the first person to glimpse into his true, kind and gentle nature. Additionally, had she not fought alongside Zuko to defeat Azula and save his life, he would have never been able to step up to the Throne and fulfill his destiny. Thus Katara is linked and bound to Zuko's destiny.
Aang's destiny was to restore peace to the world and end The One Hundred Year War. The Aang we meet during Book One - is timid and soft, a strong bender and with limitless potential, but he lacked the confidence, the back-bone, the grounding to step-up to his duties as the Avatar and defeat Ozai. Katara coddled him and never challenged him to look beyond himself. It's only after meeting Toph does Aang begin to confront his opponents with a different viewpoint, he gains a certain matureness in himself and suddenly we see him step up into his role and responsibilities. Toph's Earthbending not only saves him from death but it also gave him the strength to face his destiny. Thus, Toph is linked and bound to Aang's destiny.
It would have tied a lot of unexplored themes as well as provide a more satisfying conclusion (Aang entering the Avatar State because he followed through with Guru Pathik's lessons instead of pointy rock triggers it) and it would have been cohesive with the narrative thematic of ATLA.
I'm still astonished at how badly Bryke fumbled the bag with their romantic sub-plots. 🗿
