Possible Spoilers:

I like reading about villains' origin stories. It's always been one of my favorite genres, especially when it's well done like this one. Although we get into Levana's cruel past, we don't necessarily feel pity for her. Instead, we get a better understanding of why she does what she does in other books. At times, this book can get extremely hard to read if you are light of heart. Levana quickly changed from being pitiful to slowly become the coldhearted, calculating villain we know and hate/love.  We feel a slight pity for her because we learn that she was manipulated, bullied, and tortured by her older sister. We also learn she was the cause of her face becoming disfigured, causing her to be named "the ugly princess of Luna". We see how this greatly affects her throughout that series. She always makes sure the glamour is on and is out of sight of all mirrors. Still, this isn't enough to justify all the things she says and does throughout the book. One of the lines that stuck out to me was, "Levana had not seen the bodies, but she had seen the bedrooms the next morning, and her first thought was that all that blood would make a very pretty rouge on her lips." As the book goes on, we see her sister mysteriously die after being poisoned, making Levana the queen. This only worsened her behavior, solidifying her as we know her in the main series. We still see moments of weakness and humanity, but they are very rare and are followed by horrible actions. Overall, it did a great job of helping us understand her motives without causing us to over-sympathize with her. We see how many more issues this woman has and it actually makes us see her as being worse and crazier than she is in the main series.

it’s been a while since i have been immersed in the world of the lunar chronicles and i miss it! i’m due for a reread! i first began reading the series in 2014 after hearing about “Cress’” publication. i fell in love with these unique, dystopian retellings as well as all of the characters. each book was more phenomenal than the last and “Fairest” blew me away (i usually do not go for prequels but that one is a must read). i never ended up getting to “Winter” or “Star Above” because of the wait time and now it’s been a while. i’ll need to refresh my memory and i’m excited to do so. i 100% recommend this series to lovers of fairytale retellings, the dystopian genre, and sci-fi romance. PLEASE pick “Cinder” up if you have not already! 🤍

What I think about the psychology in Fairest:

Something I noticed was that Levana constantly gaslighted herself into thinking what benefits her. She basically committed sexual assault against Evret but convinced herself that he actually loved her. She convinced herself that killing Selene and Evret was better for her country, although it was only better for Artemisia.

I think the reason she loved Evret since she was 8 years old despite him being an adult at the time was that she was subconsciously looking for someone to love her the way her father never did. She never had any attention from her parents, and was indifferent when they died.

I think how she attempted Selene’s murder might have been a subconscious revenge against Channary, despite how she convinced herself it was merciful.

Obviously she became much worse between fairest and the main events of the series, and it doesn’t justify what she did.

These are just my thoughts after seeing into her mind.

bakugou gets horribly injured during a fight while protecting izuku and has to fully rehabilitate. izuku is there to help him all the way through. i love this fic, it's really sweet. it's pining izuku pre-slash, but it's pretty easy to see where bkdk will go next from the ending

This made me think of all the “rules of etiquette” that my parents and grandparents generation always tried to drill into us but when we asked “why?” all they could answer was “because it’s polite”

So I looked up how these rules got started

-Don’t wear a hat inside: Medieval knights were more vulnerable if they removed their helmets. Because of this, removing it in a church or in the presence of royalty felt like a respectful act of humility. It’s rude to wear a hat indoors because 1500 years ago some soldiers wanted to show God and King that they trusted them not to stab them in the head

-Don’t put your elbows on the table: In the middle ages European royalty didn’t have dining tables in their banquet halls, they used a long board balanced on trestles and covered it with a table cloth. If you leaned on the table it would unbalance and topple. People are still telling kids not to put their elbows on the table because 1500 years ago some nobles didn’t want to be embarrassed by knocking over a make-shift table and ruining a feast

-Men should pull out a woman’s chair for her: There were several periods in Western history when fashion for high society women was so restrictive that they literally couldn’t bend over when dressed for dinner. Men are told it’s polite to pull out a woman’s chair because women used to have to wear clothing that made it impossible to do that herself
