Who's gonna tell Alex Hirsch that having more fingers doesn't necessarily make someone faster at playing piano, it makes them capable of, for lack of a better way to phrase it, unlocking a top secret piano playing technique only available to people with six fingers and develop personalized hand positions and to potentially compose a piece specifically for a six fingered pianist, however no such piece is currently known to exist so we don't have an example of what that would look like.

You know what from a doylist perspective yeah Alex Hirsch just doesn't know how playing piano works but from a Watsonian perspective, the doctor attributing Ford playing flight of the bumblebee to his six fingers is an excellent microcosm of how other characters view Ford's accomplishments and abilities. Because obviously Ford isn't able to play flight of the bumblebee because he has hundreds if not thousands of hours of practice just on that one song, he can play flight of the bumblebee because he has six fingers. You don't need to actually learn to play the piano when you have six fingers, you can just sit down and boom you're setting world records! Ford doesn't actually need to study or work to understand a new concept in school, he's so smart he just knows it already, he's never had to actually work for any of his accomplishments or practice or learn new skills, he just has natural talent.

And like, that's very obviously not the case, one close look at Ford and you can see just how much effort he puts in, but the fact that to other people it seems effortless is a huge stumbling block whenever he has any sort of trouble. Couldn't get that full ride to West Coast Tech? Ford can just go sailing with Stan instead, it's not like he actually needs to go to college he obviously already knows all the curriculum already because he's Smart. Is Fiddleford getting cold feet about the hellportal in the basement Ford's staked his entire career on? It's fine he can just publish the research he already has! He's Smart so it'll definitely go over just as well as the portal research. Ford has a dream demon after him and needs someone to hide his research while he "figures out a way to stop Bill" (while exhibiting basically the entire NHIS symptom list for suicide but that's neither here nor there)? Just burn it. It's fine! He can make more, it's fine, and like. Yeah there's a lot of other shit happening in all of these scenarios that are driving everyone's actions, but like... Idk it's just interesting watching the undercurrent.

i had a whole post written about how ford is included in the anomalies and antagonists polaroids rather than being beside the shack family photo and the "mystery in the mystery shack" line and his place in the narrative but then tumblr ate the post so instead im here to again ask: who is taking these photos of ford looking hard af

if the intro shot is meant to be polaroids actually taken by someone, my money is definitely on dipper or Mostly dipper and the occasional mabel inclusion-- and so my guess for the tbob photo is that this is also a dipper contribution

however . i think it would be much funnier if ford was setting a timer up and posing himself. after all this is the guy that likes to draw himself like this and casually hits these poses
