“Yeah history isn’t for everyone,” Mason admitted nodding their head in agreement with what Hyacinthe said taking another bite of their sandwich. “I’m a female to male transgender so most people don’t always recognize me usually. So it’s okay that you don’t either, I’ve changed a lot in the past few years.”

Hyacinthe furrowed her brows further, confused by what the other was saying. “Huh?” She tilted her head. ‘Transgender’ was a word she had heard, but she never really understood it. She didn’t want to be rude, or pry into their life since it wasn’t really her business, but she wanted to know more, and wanted to still be respectful of them. “What does that mean? Like, I know what it means but like, I don’t get it...”

“Damn, you’ve been into rats for life, then,” Solomon observed with an impressed nod. He could always appreciate others’ passion. “You had any other exotic pets in your lifetime, or are you just a rat kinda girl?”

Hyacinthe nodded. She was very proud of the knowledge she had in her brain. “I haven’t had any other exotics, but I’m looking into a few different ones. I can’t decide fully yet.”

“maybe being an only child meant i have a little bit more patience with the little ones or something,” sawyer laughed, following behind hyacinthe as they got closer and closer to their destination. he was having fun so far, and she seemed like someone he could see himself wanting to be around more often. he scrunched up his nose when she mentioned the pee smell, though, laughing softly. “okay, same. that stuff, like, lingers,” he chuckled, “are we almost there?”

“Oh, yeah, that would do it.” Hyacinthe rounded the last corner, becoming more antsy. She really wanted to show off her babies. “Right? It’s like, disgusting.” She walked down a small path and pointed to a large house. “Right here,” she told him, walking through the door. “Mom, I’m home!” she called, leading the other into her bedroom. The sound of wheels spinning and rats chewing food filled the room. She closed the door and let out the three in the carrier, allowing them to go off to whichever corner of the room they chose to play in. “So, these are the boys that aren’t fixed, and these are the rest of them.” She pointed to the cages as she spoke, her smile wide with excitement. “They can all come out. Except for the other boys. They get taken out afterwards.”

“Sorry,” Eva apologized, she knew going into details about taking care of Shamrock was never a good idea. Ever. He proposal had caught Eva off guard. “Oh a whole ferret!” She wasn’t sure if she was ready to co-parent a whole animal with someone. “I’d love too but I don’t think my cats would like it very much if I came home with another animal.” As much as she wanted to own a ferret today was not the day.

Hyacinthe giggled. She knew her proposal was a little wild, but she thought she would try anyway. “Well, when- I mean if I get one or... A couple, I’ll surely let you play with ‘em.” She reached out, scratching the head of one of the rats. “It’s gonna take be a bit because like, ferrets eat rats. So I need to figure out how I’m going to keep that from happening.”

“damn, guess you’re not my cinderella after all,” charlie joked. “oh! maybe a goldfish, but definitely not insects. i’d go to sleep thinking about how they could escape their container thing and crawl into my mouth at night–” he shivered at the mere imagery of it in his head. “no way, can’t do that. if you couldn’t tell, i’m a little big of a coward. i’m cool with them when i go hiking and stuff, but i think the thought of being enclosed in a small space with them is wigging me out.”

“Well, I actually watched a video once where a professional tried to see if like, tarantulas and spiders and stuff would go into people’s mouths, and they refused. So like, maybe you would be okay there.” Hyacinthe offered the small bit of salad in the container to the rats, watching as they scurried towards the food. “There’s some cool bugs. Like, praying mantises! Those are awesome. You should look into them.”

“It was not an easy task to learn. I had real anxiety when I was supposed to learn how to feed Shamrock by myself.” Eva wasn’t fond of the struggle she had gone through to learn how to feed him.  Looking back now it felt like a lifetime ago. “But what kind of snake mom would I be if I was too scared to feed my own pet.” Owning a snake dubbed ‘cat-snake’ made a lot of sense. “I didn’t know that was a thing and now that I do I realize how on brand this suddenly is for me." 

Thinking about it now, Hyacinthe was not about to get a snake, or anything that had to eat her baby’s babies. It grossed her out. “That’s nasty.” She shook again, more dramatically this time. “That’s true. Good things rats don’t eat anything super duper gross.” Her eyes widened, reaching over to gently grab the other’s wrist. “Let’s get a ferret together.” She wasn’t sure how she suddenly came to that conclusion, but she didn’t think about it much.

“Yeah, the more you talk about them, the more it sounds like I could never own a rat,” Solomon laughed. He was glad Hyacinthe clearly had a passion for them, but they weren’t for him. “I’m just figuring out how to take care of a dog still. It seemed way easier when I was a kid, probably because my parents did most of the work, huh?”

“I’m always here if you change your mind.” Hyacinthe giggled. She loved her pets, but they weren’t for everyone. They took way more work than most people thought. Many thought they were simple to care for, and as much as she loved them, she could say they were not. “That’s so true. I didn’t really think of it like that. Like, my siblings took care of our other rats, but I was really young so I did nothing. And like, my parents helped too.”

“Aw thanks, that’s sweet of you to say,” Carolina said smiling at Hyacinthe gratefully brushing her hair off her shoulder pulling into a quick ponytail tying it with an elastic on her wrist. “It won’t happen anytime soon though, sometime in the distant future probably.”

Hyacinthe shrugged, looking down to the ground with a smile. “You’re awesome.” She could never take on something like that herself. “Oh, yeah. It’ll take so long probably. Still, though. I don’t even know how I could do that.”

everything hyacinthe said seemed to grate on indy’s nerves more and more. she wished she could be anywhere but here, she wished she didn’t have to team up with anyone for this stupid project she didn’t care about, she wished cara was still here. crossing her arms over her chest, indy let out a small grunt, rolling her eyes before setting out her canvases, folders, and art supplies on the table she’d have to share with hyacinthe. “hopefully people will like my shit?” she asked, defensive more than anything, “wow.”

Hyacinthe’s eyes widened and she let out a small yelp as the girl snapped at her. She didn’t mean for it to sound rude, but she could see how it could have been taken poorly. She only shook her head, not replying as she kept her eyes down to the task at hand. “S-sorry,” she stuttered, almost a whisper. To anger the other wasn’t exactly what she had been going for. She just wanted to get this done and over with, especially now that she had screwed up.

“i studied education, realised i liked working with younger kids pretty quickly, but who knows, really. i might end up working with the older ones one day,” sawyer shrugged. there were so many rewards that came with working with little kids that he loved, but he’d like to challenge himself one day and work with teenagers. he just had to overcome his own terrible past with high school before he decided to throw himself back into that environment again. he followed behind hyacinthe then, a little bounce in his step. “oh, i don’t mind about the smell,” he laughed softly, “my dog has some pretty mean farts, so i get it.”

Hyacinthe was completely enthralled with the idea of teaching, or working with children. It wasn’t exactly something she would do, but she though it was awesome that he chose to go down that path. “That’s so good of you! Being around all of my siblings, I couldn’t even do that.” She broke out into giggles at his comment. She was quite childish sometimes, especially about something like that. “It’s the pee smell I don’t like.”

“You have a cat and rats? Aren’t they supposed to, like, hate each other?” Solomon mused ignorantly. Again, he didn’t have any experience with rats in real life, but what else could Tom and Jerry be based on? “That’s cool, though, I love animals, too, but I’m usually too lazy to do research or anything. They’re just fun to play with and stuff.”

“Well, she doesn’t go into my room, so she’s never near them.” Hyacinthe frowned slightly when he mentioned he didn’t do research, but she supposed that not everyone had the time, or cared enough to do so. “With things like rats or other exotic animals though, you have to do research.”

“I’m a history teacher. It’s my first year teaching at the middle school.” Mason explained taking another bite of their sandwich eyebrows raising when Hyacinthe told them her age. “Oh you’re a couple of years younger than me then no wonder. Do you recognize me then?” It was an honest question as most people who had known them growing up had a bit of a hard time recognizing them after starting their transition.

“History was never my forte.” At their question, Hyacinthe shook her head, brows furrowing. “No. Am I supposed to?” Now, she wondered if they knew who she was. She was beginning to feel bad that she didn’t know who they were.

“Must be fun then,” Carolina said shrugging her shoulders smiling kindly at Hyacinthe watching her carefully glancing around a couple of times. “Oh, it’s not cheap I bet, probably around the same as house I think depending on the type of purchase. I know you can rent retail spaces easily but even that’s still not cheap depending on where it’s located.”

“Well, only when I’m working.” Hyacinthe’s eyes widened as the other explained the costs, though she wasn’t sure why she was surprised about that. It made sense. “Wow. You’re awesome for that then. I think you’ll be a great owner.”

“I was so worried you’d be upset by the fact I have a snake but I swear I’m about to talk your ear off about my scaly baby.” Eva related to her sentiment all too well. “Feeding him was difficult I guess it helped that the food wasn’t live. And I had a friend in New York who was a snake expert. So she helped me out a lot.” Eva had existed for 20 years and not once existed in the same place as a ferret and she wanted to change that. “I want to pet a ferret one day! They look adorable they’re so tiny and furry and I love them. But two cats and a snake are enough for me.”

“Oh, no. Of course not. I love all animals, even if they do have to survive off of the species of my children.” Her smiled faltered slightly, and she stuck her tongue out and shuddered in disgust. “That’s awesome! I wish I could have some kind of guru for that.” She shrugged. “From what I’ve seen, they’re a lot of work. Y’know, I think people call them cat-snakes. Because that’s kind of what they look like.”

indy had to keep reminding herself that this was all about business, as it was, rather than a social thing. she and hyacinthe hadn’t gotten off to the best start, and if indy knew anything about herself, it was that she could hold a grudge ‘til the end of time. she nodded as hyacinthe explained what she’d been working on, peaking into the bag she’d brought along. she wasn’t sure if arts and baking goods exactly went together, but all she cared about at the moment was getting this whole thing over and done with. “sounds good,” she said, “do you have a goal for how much you want to make?” honestly, indy didn’t care too much, but the bragging rights of making the most appealed to her more than anything to do with the diner itself these days.

Hyacinthe was a person who tried to keep the peace, even if she didn’t exactly like the person. She didn’t have much a choice in this matter, though. She set the cooler down on the table and began to set the baked goods up on a few display platters she’d brought along. “I have a bunch more at home if we need them.” She had spent all night baking, and ended up getting a little too carried away. Luckily, her family was large, so it would be gone pretty quickly if they didn’t end up using all of it. “As much as we can make. Hopefully people will be interested enough to buy our things. I mean, like, people love food, and when they come to get it they will see your art. Hopefully they’ll like it all enough to buy something from you as well.” She shrugged and tossed the cooler bag under the table.

“I’m a teacher actually,” Mason replied biting into his sandwich their eyebrows raising in surprise at her comment about living here so long as they didn’t recognize her. “How long have you lived in Cape Hazel? I’ve lived here my whole life and I don’t remember you at all.”

“Really? What kind of teacher?” Hyacinthe thought for a moment, but it was only a few passing seconds. “Well, we moved here when I was two. So, seventeen years. I’m surprised. But there’s lots of people here. It’s possible we would have never met.”

“Yeah, I always make sure to get as much done on my days off,” Carolina said focusing on Hyacinthe’s face and not the rats shrugging her shoulders. “Baking has always been my passion though. I’m planning on buying the bakery when the owner plans to retire.”

“Lucky for me, I’m not busy very often.” Hyacithe tilted her mention at the mention of Carolina buying the bakery. She would love to own a bakery one day. And an exotic pet shop. She thought maybe she could do a spin on them. Buy a cupcake and a pet. But that’s not very sanitary... “That’s awesome! How much does that even cost?”
