I think what I like about Holden is that while other characters see a world that is not the way they want it to be and work hard to change it, Holden simply decides the way the world will be and dares it to question him.

His defining trait is sheer willpower. He's not especially strong, not especially quick, not especially smart. His secret power is simply Wanting Something A Lot, but sometimes he can do it so hard that his enemies die.

A prime example of this is during his escort of the Somnambulist, where he's targetted by the entire Martian Navy and just targets them back and says "I'll shoot you if you don't let me past and we'll all die." And there's absolutely no reason why this should've worked. There was no chance the Rocinante could possibly have won against that many ships. But there was every chance the Rocinante could've taken a couple of ships with her, and every single captain on every single ship decided that they didn't want want to roll the dice on it being them.

James Holden decided that he would not accept a world where he didn't get the refugee ship he was escorting out of harm's way, and so that world simply did not get to exist.
