I heard its illegal to practice alchemy in certain states, but there's not much out there as to why. Got any ideas why?
Let’s look at two case studies to see why:
California, 1922. The alchemist Theophrastus Bombastus Paraschwarzenegger arrives in San Francisco, and sets up shop. He contributes several tons of gold to local politicians and as a result, California amends its constitution to provide protections for alchemists and their practice.
By contrast:
Utah, 1901. The Alchemical Order of the Mercury Sable is founded by several fraudulent magicians to scam the church out of $12, which in 1901 was equivalent to $789 billion today. Claiming they could make gold out of less valuable metals, they were given nearly all of Utah’s ore supply, which they promptly sold off to become rich themselves, leaving the state empty of metal and distrusting of new alchemists, who might even be able to refill the state’s supplies with their abilities. Oddly, the wording of this law also prohibits Cartoon Network from airing Fullmetal Alchemist.
So the true answer is that each state has had different experiences with the art, making it legal in 11 states, illegal in 38 states, and semi-legal in Florida, where the politicians responsible thought Alchemy was a type of alcoholic beverage and it was banned only for sale on Sundays.
