          ayanami tilts her head to the source of hushed voice , bright blood-red eyes were blank and always inscrutable  ; ‘ similar eyes ’, she heard but the girl towering near her brushes it off. she wasn’t the type to pry someone and interrogate them ... it wasn’t her top priority either ... she was here for more important reasons. she studies the stoic mien of the stranger with brows slightly furrowed. “ this is z city, correct ...? i was sent here for ... an important business trip to investigate the city and it civilians ... “

          “ ... i don’t think you like it when i have something to say ... “ especially since what happened in the elevator ; when asuka tried to slap her after rei attempted to advise her about piloting her eva and opening her heart and soul to the beast.

          the sight of the girl he created from nothing had always inspired in the man a sense of sheer contentment, almost pure satisfaction.  unbelievable, returning to feel such “genuine” emotions for brief instants  -  he thought them gone for years and years!  and it didn’t matter that, once glancing at those red eyes even for a second, most of those pleasant bittersweet thoughts seemed to vanish at once, gone, with the stone cold truth of facts  - her creation, their mission -  taking their place; he had to admit it: illuding himself was almost becoming addictive.

          «  Plain, as usual after all, Rei.  »   the man’s face relaxed, and his tone softened at those next words, while the doors of the elevator slowly closed before them  «  As always… nothing new. Where are you heading, now?  »

          " i planned on training ... or, getting more in touch with eva unit 00. however, major katsuragi-san invited me to her place this evening ... she says i’m too quiet around the other pilots ; but is that particularly bad ...? hmm ... “ 

           the bonds and connections with other beings could be beneficial to her but she knew about the drawbacks of becoming too close. even gendo, who’s the only parental figure she has ever had, wasn’t so attach to ayanami. each day she spent with the pilots, she felt herself becoming more confused by new-found sentiments. the memories of ikari-san and his blue eyes becoming flooded with tears followed by his smiles ; some of the obscure subjects second child discussed, questioning why rei was so obedient or if she felt anything toward their classmates ... but each night, when she tried slumbering, thoughts swarmed in her head, over the simplest topics and idle conversations.

          “ well ... if you don’t want me to go over to her place, it’s fine ... but ... “

        an outward expression is not necessary for nagisa kaworu to pick up on emotion thrumming through the chest of any being that passes him. the concern, subtle as it is, that is rising in her chest is noticed, but unmentioned. her soul is barely a flickering flame in the darkness, there but with the tiniest presence. what’s hiding beneath it is what compels him to find her, to reach out to someone who is just like him, in her own way. two vessels hiding among the lilin.

       “i’d just like to talk to you,” the fifth replies, “it’s no order. you decide for yourself if you wouldn’t mind.”

          he seems phlegmatic, he’s not intrusive, and he’s certainly more friendly compare to the previous pilot of eva unit 02. but there’s something about the fifth which piques ayanami … it feels like he knows so much about her but he just arrived to nerv headquarters the other day. she never thought about it, but she muses if it was something deeper or just a case of what typical people call ' déjà vu ’ . but she isn’t prone to such phenomenons. it must be something more complex ; far more difficult to for a normal human to comprehend. 

          “ talk to me about what ...? people always tell me i’m quite boring to chat with ... “ 

           well, asuka thought she was boring to talk to ... but she hated ayanami.

    ♛ “Wait; what?” exclaims Asuka in but one breath. Conversations between she and Rei were always ritualistic and one sided, what with Asuka being the talkative and confident person she was, and the First being an excellent listener rather than one who gave unsolicited responses. Never was Rei the one to speak first, so was she begging for an onslaught? That was Asuka’s place. Even so, it hurt that nobody had informed her of this information besides the beneficiary herself. Damn Misato.

    “Why didn’t anyone tell me—!?”

           the second child is easy to read and she’s undoubtedly agitated by the news. rei, on the other hand, could honestly care less about what’s going on. without noticing, she's studying the other’s countenance ; how her brows furrowed and her she flared her nostrils ... rei never really gave attention to her but never bothered her in any sort of way. she begins to ponder if asuka was more upset that katsuragi forgot to tell her about plans or the fact she would be sharing a room with her. she sighs and blank vermilion eyes look up, formulating an answer for the girl across from her. hmm ... she needs to word it carefully.

          “ maybe she figured ... you would react so ... strongly. “

          she feels animosity from the second child every time she is near. even if it was not directed toward rei ... it still left her uncomfortable, as they strip naked and change into their plugsuits and prep for another angel attack. asuka would often gloat of her superiority and her adroitness of piloting ; the first child was just a receiving end. however, it was better than awkward silence. however, there was some interesting news from her end ;

         “ major katsuragi invited me to her apartment complex next sunday... ”
