My #TBT Moment. People sometimes ask where did I get the name Cel OR when did I become Cel...well when I was born lol. Technically, I didn’t really see the cool in my initials until the 3rd grade. This was when the world of hip-hop & the arts took a hold of my 8 year old life. It’s when I wrote my first verse and could do the centipede like a true break-dance warrior princess! Many folks don’t know I actually spent a chunk of my childhood in Houston, TX. This was in the 80′s when folks were again leaving Michigan in droves due to another major collapse in the work force. A few months after this photo I came home and asked my mom 3 things:
2. What is #Reaganomics ?
3. What is a nigger??? Cause I keep getting called that in class!
Let’s just say she answered all three the best way she could and I after completing third grade I never saw Houston,TX again...until I was a super adult (LAST Year). She was determined to make sure the struggles she endured in the South as a child would never be mine. Now sure Michigan and Southwest Detroit to be exact, gave me different types of struggles...but I wouldn’t be the “Cel” I am today if I didn’t experience life as a Detroiter. I definitely have a different way of looking at life and putting my own personal touch to things that are most important to me. My inroad to happiness definitely doesn’t lie in money, accolades, and depreciative items. To quote one of my favorite emcees #RIPPhifeDawg “I never let a statue tell me how nice I am”. I am Cel...all day...everyday...Chanda Elizabeth Long...equipped with what I need to succeed:-)
