AKA welcome to my latest Zutara rant in light of recent fandom events (atla movie leaks). This is long, so buckle up...
SO.
We all clearly saw those really obnoxious jabs directed at us Zutarians—and the fact that Zuko and Katara don’t share a single line or moment alone together feels very obvious and deliberate… and honestly, in pretty bad taste.
“Delusional,” you say? Good. I was paying attention. I’ve seen their chemistry!
Because are we seriously supposed to just PRETEND the profound bond they established in the og ATLA never existed!? Like—you know, the bond they forged through forgiveness, respect, and mutual understanding, as they fought side by side and saved each other in every way two people can possibly save each other?!? LIKE????!!! WHAT?!?(Meanwhile, I’m told Zukka shippers got plenty of moments, so no—I’m not imagining things here).
And yeah, I’m not saying anything new here—we’ve all noticed it. But you know what, guys? I get it.
I understand why Bryke might be eternally salty about us, because imagine accidentally writing one of the most compelling, layered love dynamics in your own story… and then watching it completely outshine your intended canon ship.
Like—imagine that happening to you.
We’re talking about a dynamic so powerful that even the voice actors saw it. In Dante Basco’s case, he even went as far as publicly stating that Zuko had a huge crush on Katara—AND YET, EVEN THEN! You still refuse to acknowledge that maybe, just maybe, your own story developed that relationship more than the intended canon one. So now, you’ve gotta double down.
Because that same “loathsome” ship you seem to hate so much goes on to become one of the biggest, most enduring ships in fandom history… so instead, you make it your life’s mission to mock it—constantly trying to reinforce your canon ship so there’s “no doubt” about your approved endgame—while openly calling Zutarians delusional for seeing something that genuinely made more sense than your “Virgin Mary-saves-and-raises-a-savior” dynamic of a ship (at least up until Avatar: The Last Airbender 2005).
So no—I’m not surprised we were denied even the smallest of crumbs in this movie (and to some extent, it’s understandable—it is Aang’s story, and I do love Aang individually). But these fools act as if we haven’t been a numerous, present, valid part of the fandom for decades… so why the unnecessary mockery?
That’s the part I’ll never understand. It just feels very disrespectful and overdone.
But honestly? This is nothing new to us. We’ve been here before. So—WHO CARES?!
I’ll be over here, enjoying all the absolutely delicious fanart and fanfics about to flood our feeds—and I will say one good thing about the small scenes I’ve seen floating around (I refuse to watch the film pirated—animators and artists deserve our gratitude, respect, and support first!): I’m genuinely happy we at least get to see Katara being treated like a queen by her partner as she so rightfully deserves.
And hey, they’re older now—Aang doesn’t look 10 anymore, and they all look SO FOIIIINE, guys. SOOOO FOIIINEEEEEEE!!!
So let’s just enjoy this as much as possible and, as we've always done, ignore Bryke and canon.
