NAS TALKS "DAUGHTERS" AND RASING KIDS OF "THIS GENERATION" One of Nas' most personal songs from his latest album Life Is Good is "Daughters," which deals with some of the issues the Queensbridge emcee has had with raising his daughter, Destiny Jones. In a recent interview with Philadelphia's Power 99's Cosmic Kev, Nas explained that the track addressed real-life situations with Destiny. "It's mostly her," confirmed Nas. "She's a good kid. With the new age, with computers, the kids get a chance to do a lot more than we did when we was teenagers. They do so much more. So they way they pop off, [that's] the way they bring attention to they whole thing." Nas admitted that he was partly to blame for the issues, which included his daughter posting pictures of condoms on her Twitter account. "And part of it is our fault. They see what's going on in the entertainment business, in show business, so the internet gives them a way to act like they're in that game now. They can feel like they can talk to the world through the internet, so everybody's doing all kinds of mess on the internet." "My whole thing to my daughter was, 'Be careful of stylin' on people on there, talking crazy,'" added Nas. "It's not a Rap song. It's really something people look at and try to judge you off of."

CHIEF KEEF "FINALLY RICH" COVER After signing with Interscope Records, Chief Keef is in no rush to put out his debut album. Instead, he's got plans to drop another mixtape titled Finally Rich, revealing a handful of guest appearances to expect on the project during an interview with Pitchfork Selector. "I'm going to do an album whenever Interscope tells me to do an album. But I'm doing a mixtape. When they say it's album time, it's album time," he said, name-dropping a few features on the tape. "Yo Gotti, Young Jeezy, Waka Flocka, seeing if I can get Gucci on there… I got a lot of people on there." Watch the full clip below, which features a freestyle over Team Elite’s "Stunna Shades."
"I AM NOT HAPPY WITH INTERSCOPE RECORDS" - YELAWOLF It looks like 50 Cent may not be the only artist to be having trouble with Interscope Records' business practices. In a recent interview with DJ Skee, Yelawolf discussed his issues with the house of Jimmy Iovine. He offered his advice to up-and-coming artists, saying that major labels aren't really necessary at this point, particularly when they don't promote their artists' works. "You don't really fuckin' need a label anymore; you don't need a major label, you don't need none of that shit," he explained. "If they're not absolutely working as a promotional company, as an engine to promote your music every single fuckin' day…when you sign a contract, you better be damn sure that they have obligations to work your shit. A lot of nonsense comes with it; I wish I could say that I'm happy with my situation, but I'm not. I'm just putting it out there, that's my job…I don't have anything personal against Interscope or anyone up there, but my situation is not what it's supposed to be." Catfish Billy also discussed his numerous upcoming projects, including a collaborative EP Travis Barker Psycho White and his long-awaited effort with Big K.R.I.T. Country Cousins. Adding to the already-extensive list, Yela revealed that he's going to be releasing a sequel to his acclaimed breakthrough effort Trunk Muzik. "I did a five-song EP with Travis Barker called Psycho White," he said. "We got together on this, just him and I, [and it was] just a meeting of the minds on these five records. [It features] Tim Armstrong from Rancid on one of the records… [it's like] a reggae-punk vibe on that record. Up next after the dust settles off of Heart of Dixie, we're dropping Trunk Muzik Returns." He continued, "The Big K.R.I.T. collabo Country Cousins, yeah, it's definitely coming. I can't tell you when, but me an K.R.I.T. are going to make that happen for the fans. Everybody's asking about it, I think it's inevitable. It's going down…it's gonna be special."

"The last time I spoke to Dre was a couple of weeks ago, he was out there finishing up the Jimi Hendrix movie," he said. "I think he just wrapped the movie up last week or whatever. [We were] just chopping up, just homeboy to homeboy. That's my brother, it ain't nothing but all loving.
PRODUCER'S PLAYGROUND: SPeeKa Background: Thapelo Modiela (also known as "Speeka") is a Hip-Hop, Kwaito and House producer born and raised in Soweto (born in Diepkloof, raised in Protea Glen). Though he produces three different genres, it is his Hip-Hop productions that have gained him a lot of attention on the underground Soweto music scene. He began producing in 2005, while in the 11th Grade in High School, after his father bought him his first Desktop Computer. After learning a few things in the producing craft, with no formal music training, he and his two best friends started a Kwaito group called "BloodHoundz". It was during this period that he noticed that being a recording artist wasn't really his strong point, and that his true passion was in making beats. Musical Influences: After 3 years of constantly working on his craft (which subsequently led him to drop out of college in 2007) he met recording artists W.A.R. Bandit, MaseVen, Axe-Ray, The Soil and Red Button. These are the artists who helped Speeka find his true sound: a heavily Street, Kwaito, Boom Bap yet musical sound with influences from local and international producers such as D-Rex, Mdu Masilela, Mandla Spikiri, Dr. Dre, Kanye West, Eminem and Timbaland. Most of Speeka's beats are characterized by his heavy use of bass, which many have called "The Speeka Signature". Projects: In March 2010, Speeka released his first album titled "Speeka Presents: The Insane Maestro". An 18 track disc that featured W.A.R. Bandit, MaseVen, Axe-Ray, The Soil, Red Button and a host of local unsigned talent. In the project, Speeka broke down the barriers that were between Vernac Rap, Abstract Rap, Kwaito and Soul, something that had never been done before, especially in the underground scene. Though only a few copies were printed, due to financial constraints, it is considered by many to be a true SA Hip-Hop classic. Later that year in September, He released MaseVen's "Sotra Mixtape Volume 1" in which he worked on 80% of the production, the rest of the production work were popular international beats that they had gathered. In 2011 he worked on two projects: "Axe-Ray, MaseVen & Sbuda P – DangerBox Mixtape" and "Etcetera vs. Speeka – Shooting Stars EP" released on 1 July 2011 and 30 September 2011 respectively. On the "DangerBox Mixtape" he did most of the production work. Other producers on the project include PoetickSoul, n20 and Dynamic. On the Shooting Stars EP he did all the production work, with Etcetera doing all the song writing and rapping. On 20 April 2012 he released "The Black Sheep beat-tape", a limited edition beat-tape with only 30 copies printed. Career Highlights: So far, Speeka's biggest career highlights have been getting praises from Radio DJ's Sizwe "Siz" Dhlomo and Siyabonga "Scoop" Ngwekazi on their Hip-Hop radio show "The Full Clip" on YFM 99.2 a number of times after MC's (such as Maraza, Etcetera, MaseVen, Sbuda P, Axe Ray, Siya Shezi, Spy2 and a lot more) freestyled over his beats. Also, the Love Life documentary titled "Isitimela" which aired on SABC1 in August 2011 featured all work produced by Speeka most of which was taken from "Speeka Presents: The Insane Maestro". Goals and Aspirations: With his production company "Pulse Ink Productions", which deals with music production and video/film production, Speeka hopes to build a media empire. He also hopes that the unsigned artists he has worked with, all make it in the growing SA Hip-Hop industry. In an industry where most of the music is formulaic, Speeka hopes to bring an element that speaks to everybody from all walks of life and also bring Hip-Hop new fans.
HIP-HOP NEWS UPDATE IN REVIEW
This week, Lord Finesse filed a substantial $10 million lawsuit against Mac Miller, accusing the young rapper of lifting the instrumental from “Hip 2 Da Game” for Mac’s 2010 mixtape track “Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza.” Beanie Sigel was sentenced to two years in prison for tax evasion, but plans to release a new album This Time ahead of his turn-in date via Ruffhouse Records. Finally, Truth Hurts chopped it up with HipHopDX, explaining why she left Interscope Records and her participation in a bare-it-all Penthouse spread in Europe. Lord Finesse Sues Mac Miller For $10 Million Over Sample On Monday, Lord Finesse filed a whopping $10 million lawsuit against Mac Miller over repurposing the instrumental from his classic track “Hip 2 Da Game” for “Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza,” included on his 2010 mixtape K.I.D.S. Mac responded to the lawsuit on Twitter, stating that he reused the instrumental to pay homage to Finesse and that he “did nothing wrong,” since Finesse never cleared the original sample for his track. The two spoke later on during the week, which was followed by the Rostrum Records signee taking to Twitter to confirm that the lawsuit stood regardless of intentions. Finesse finally responded with a statement that insisted that Miller lifted the entire record for his own personal gain and that the “truth will come out in court.” Beanie Sigel Sentenced To Two Years In Prison, Preps New Album Beanie Sigel got a harsh bit of news this week. The former Roc-A-Fella Records signee was sentenced to two years in prison after railing to pay more than $728,000 in federal income taxes. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native pleaded guilty to tax evasion in August 2011 for defaulting on income taxes from 1999 to 2005. He got off easy, as his original sentence could have amounted to three years. Shortly after the news broke, famed 1990s label Ruffhouse Records announced its return with a new Sigel album, This Time, which will be released on August 28th ahead of September 12th, when he is required by law to report to prison. Truth Hurts Explains Why She Left Interscope, Upcoming “Penthouse” Spread Truth Hurts has been missing in action for a handful of years, but she resurfaced this week with an exclusive interview with HipHopDX. During our chat, the former Aftermath/Interscope signee explained the lawsuit behind her breakout and sole hit “Addictive,” stating that they pulled the record off of shelves after a $500,000,000 suit was filed for an uncleared sample. She explained that she decided to leave the label shortly afterwards because she didn’t want to get dropped, and she had the feeling that she was a liability for the imprint and Dr. Dre. She also discussed her songwriting career and leaning towards a Rock sound, as well a her upcoming project that’s close to completion. And, of course, she discussed her Penthouse shoot, justifying why she decided to bear it all for the European edition of the magazine.
YOUNG BUCK SENTENCED TO 3 YEARS,BUT WILL ONLY SERVE 18 MONTHS ON WEAPONS CHARGES
Young Buck was sentenced Friday (July 13) to three years in prison after being convicted on weapons charges. The conviction stems from an arrest for possessing weapons despite being a convicted felon. MSNBC reports that the judge in the case sentenced Buck to serve his two counts concurrently, so he will spend 18 months in jail. "With the judge not considering my history to subtract some time, I'm just thankful for what time I do have," said Buck of the matter. In addition to the jail time, numerous pieces of gold and diamond jewelry owned by Buck will be auctioned by the IRS on July 26. "I've had some rough times. I've been fighting the bankruptcy situation, and there were some court situations," said the rapper.
SLAUGHTERHOUSE TALKS "ALBUM DELAY" AND "BLACK HIPPY COLLABORATION AS A PRIORITY" When Slaughterhouse's debut on Shady Records, welcome to: Our House, was delayed to an August release date, many fans wondered the reason. In a recent interview with Fuse, the four lyricists spoke on the matter. "Too many different reasons, too many different variables with how we control the music," explained Joe Budden. "I mean, it gets to be an issue between label and retail, but I’m always grateful for more time.” "It gives you more time to be creative, more time to promote and think of more ways to raise the awareness out there," added Budden. "It’s a great thing for me...8/28 is the final date." Slaughterhouse also discussed teaming up with another quartet: Black Hippy, which is comprised of Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, and Schoolboy Q. "I spoke to Ab-Soul about it," said Budden. "It's just a natural thing. Them standing for the things that they stand for, very similar to the things that we stand for." "Both being extremely lyrical supergroups...I'd like to try and make the inevitable happen. That's a priority for us. I'm gonna make that happen." Slaughterhouse also discussed some possibly unexpected acts they listen to. "Kings of Leon, Hall and Oates, Barry White...I was listening to Secret Garden all yesterday," said Royce Da 5'9. "Yesterday I was on my in-line skates listening to Radiohead," said Joell Ortiz. "Yeah, I do that. In these streets, G." "I listen to Classical Music," said Crooked I. "Sometimes I don't want to hear a bunch of words, people yappin' all day. I hear enough of that just in my own music."
BEANIE SIGEL TO RELAUNCH ALBUM UNDER RUFFHOUSE RECORDS Famed 1990s Hip Hop record label Ruffhouse Records is back. The imprint that was involved in the careers of Cypress Hill, The Fugees, Kool Keith and Schoolly D has returned after over a decade hiatus. In a statement released yesterday (July 12), label co-founder Chris Schwartz announced Ruffhouse's return with a Beanie Sigel album due next month. Schwartz also acknowledged the developing news of Beanie Sigel's tax felony sentencing, a story which also broke yesterday. "We're extremely proud to be re-launching Ruffhouse Records with Beanie Sigel as our first artist," said Schwartz, a founding partner at the groundbreaking label which sold 100 million records worldwide in its first incarnation. "His [tax sentence] doesn’t change any of that in the least. Regardless of this unfortunate situation, Beanie has created a tremendous body of work that is totally worthy of the Ruffhouse name. It’s almost ironic that the sentencing is happening on the eve of this record, because this record is about introspection and redemption. Beanie is truly one of the great lyricists in the hip-hop game. He stands tall among all the major emcees and he's revered by all Hip Hop aficionados around the world." Ruffhouse and Beanie will release This Time on August 28, billed as Sigel's fifth studio album. The album will be distributed through EMI. In 2007, the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania emcee released The Solution on Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam Records.
