Peace family, . I was asked by a friend at @RevoltTV to preview the upcoming @DetroitMovie, written by Mark Boal and directed by Kathryn Bigelow. To begin, I was honored to be extended a seat in the theatre. I came into the evening without any real knowledge of what to expect. Granted, I saw a trailer some time ago and immediately felt some kind of way about the film itself. I mean, hey, I am a black man in America...I feel all kinds of ways about a lot of things, this however felt different. . *Why do we need this film? Who is it serving? Is this another white director capitalizing off of the “#BlackLivesMatter” movement?* . My partner and I arrived to the Beverly Hills screening facility a bit before call time and embraced the other really amazing Black folks in the waiting area: artists, gangsta gardners, festival producers, tech executives and more. It felt a bit like a family reunion. It is time to take our seats. . The lights dim. . The movie begins. . Beautiful black bodies swarm the screen and I feel at home. . 143 minutes later, after many moments of hand squeezes, leg grabs and an insurmountable number of traumatic moments, my partner and I exit the theatre and await my turn to speak to the #RevoltTV camera about what I experienced. . To keep this very brief...I am simply tired of non-Black people, mainly white men, women, or gender non-conforming folks, telling Black stories. Period. There are so many stories to be told, through a myriad of mediums, other than the time we were enslaved or the times we burned down our "communities." I want to celebrate the resilience of said people through Documentaries like @WhoseStreets, written by the community of #Ferguson and directed by @DamonDavis and @SabaahFolayan...which comes out the same time as this film. . One thing I can say this movie is great for, however, is, simply, to serve as a juxtaposition for every piece of black art that comes out hereafter. I believe by seeing it as such, it will show how much more radical and creative WE are with the stories we share about ourselves! . The acting was cool though. Peace to Black actors working! ;) . #triggerwarning #dobetter #weareart #greedycity
