Today I’ve been experimenting with using from 1 to 3 microphones and trying to find solid balance in the dynamics. This was 3 mics total. Snare, Kick, and Overhead.

These new C&C Custom Drum tools just sound magical in their own the mics don’t matter.

New Studio Vibes Rant // TL;DR This week I spent a majority of my days re-organizing and re-arranging my studio. I unplugged EVERY SINGLE CABLE and removed EVERYTHING out of the studio and started from scratch. Sometimes destroying something is the best way to re-build. When I recorded “Ritual” I decided to change everything I was doing in my process of making music both in general and all of my albums prior. I realized that the aptly titled “Ritual” was named that for a reason. To me, the act of making music with all of these beautiful machines is extremely cathartic and I truly do use it in a ritualistic fashion as a form of meditation. When I am creating, I am 100% consumed by what I am doing. I decided to take the same ethos I applied to my meditative electronic music therapy sessions and use it as a main form of creation. When starting nearly any given track, I don’t go into it with everything planned. I don’t know what “leads” I am going to play, or how long the track will be, or really what it will even end up sounding like. My process is pretty simple… I hit record with EVERY INSTRUMENT ready to go and I will generally start with only a tempo and a key or scale in mind that I know I want to keep it in. Now with the addition of a gear rack mount cabinet, a 3 tier-stand, and a new DJ table for ONLY my Eurorack, everything is within reach and the struggle should now slowly fade into a more effortless and comfortable way of creating. In short, if you’ve made it this far, all I really wanted to say was here’s a random picture of me sitting in my new and cozy workspace and some studio shots to show it off. I still have some MASSIVE cable management to do, because seeing cables (it stands out more to me in pictures) makes my severe OCD go insane. “Everything In Its Right Place” as the wise prophet Thom Yorke once said. So much thanks to my brother from another mother @erikcasemolenaar with @sweetwatersound because over the last few moths he’s helped me so much to make sure I was choosing the right gear for what I needed. Not just selling me “stuff,” but selling me the RIGHT stuff and steering me away from things I didn’t really need. Nathan Johnson // Knives Out - OST From the very first note... (G minor, to be exact!) I just wanted to take a moment here to talk about this film, “Knives Out” because I feel quite strongly that if you’ve not seen it, it should absolutely be on your mandatory to-watch ASAP list. It was hands down my absolute favorite film of 2019. It’s very rare, I’ve found, when my favorite film and soundtrack of a year (2019) happens to be the same, but this is very much the case right here. This film score by Nathan Johnson is not only magnificent within the context of the film, in such a playful way that everything is so intentional, it heightens even the most simple of scenes, but played on its own it carry as equal amount of weight. From the very first track to the very end, I’ve listened to this OST multiple times in a row many times over now. It’s an absolute cinematic gem. I’m beyond stoked! Eva told me today after I picked her up from school that she was ready for me to teach her how to skate, I was so elated, we drove straight to @pluto_sports_skateboards to get all geared up. Luckily these guys are beyond rad and helped me to outfit an 11 year old with EVERYTHING she needed. ✌🏽 She had such an excellent time getting to pick out and customize everything from her deck, to the trucks and wheels and I’m not gonna lie, I gave her full reign of whatever deck or brand she wanted, and when she picked my fav. brand, @alienworkshop without ANY pressure from me, I was beyond stoked. Just yesterday morning a few buddies agreed to help me build a 5’ tall and 10’ long halfpipe in my back yard. This is quite exciting because it’s sadly been at least 4 or 5 years since I’ve skated and it use to be such a MASSIVE part of my life growing up with my brother in VA Beach, and I have missed it and it’s time to hop back on. When my last deck I was skating a few years back broke, between music, work, and life in general I still haven’t gotten around to replacing it and in turn, stopped skating. Tragic. I have always skated Alien Workshop decks, and when I pulled up the website last night to browse the current decks I found this absolutely beautiful and cosmically obvious sign that getting back into skating is meant to be. Not only is this my favorite skate brand, but Burial is hands down one of the most influential artists on me in electronic music. This all feels so magical I’m stoked to have this gorgeous deck pre-ordered. Not shipping till March, so that gives us plenty of time to get the halfpipe together. 🖤🛹
