Histology look-a-like #67
Vermilion Cliffs (Arizona) v Lines of Zahn (Thrombus)
Special thanks to anon who spotted this look-a-like.
Lines of Zahn are a characteristic of thrombi (blood clots) that appear in vessels. You can see these stria macroscopically (in large vessels) and microscopically (in smaller ones) as they form alternating light and dark bands. The light bands are referred to as “red-cell poor” because they are composed of platelets mixed with fimbrin. The darker bands are referred to as “red-cell rich” because they are composed of erythrocytes.
Lines of Zahn show that the thrombus formed over a period of time when the person was still alive. With layers of platelets then red cells then platelets building up over time.
