I like to binge watch at the weekend rather than watch them every day and it's so annoying as a hard of hearing person that some episodes do not have subtitles.

Looking on Twitter, the lack of subtitles on various Channel 4 programmes seems to be a common complaint! You'd think a channel that prides itself on diversity and inclusion would be on top of something like this.

If you look at the Hollyoaks Wiki’s List of Appearances pages for Ste and Leah and cross-reference them, it will at least narrow your search down to episodes that they both appeared in together.

Probably. It’s just a convenience when the numbers line up in a familiar way. Neighbours had the same idea up until the past few years when they went all-year-round, which has meant some 4-episode weeks instead of 5 - but it seems this is just the new normal, and everyone will have had to adapt to new habits.

I’m not keen on the episode count being off though. I think that’s my biggest issue here. Up until April 2020 Hollyoaks’ total had re-synced itself again, but now we have a situation where the episode marked #6000 could end up actually being episode 6001, 6002, etc.

I could see them compensating for this in the future, perhaps if they are forced to have a 4-episode week over Christmas/New Year 2021, they could drop an episode number to compensate for episode #5505A at least. As a data nerd I’m eager to find out what they do.

For the record, Brookside’s final count wasn’t accurate either - they never bothered trying to fix it. The ‘official’ count was 2932 episodes, but that doesn’t include the 4 unnumbered episodes which were commissioned at a late stage for Christmas 1988 and 1989. Brookside also had 2 extended episodes (one triple-length in 1997, and the final episode was *almost* double-length) which could have added another 3 numbers to the count (if counting them as half-hours).

Preliminary listings for Christmas are now out and it seems I was right - it’s showing a 4-episode week w/c 20th December, with episode numbers jumping from #5749 to #5751. It appears #5750 is being completely omitted, possibly to compensate for the #5505A situation back in January, but it could also be a case of Channel 4 simply not granting them enough timeslots to cover the whole week, so they want to keep episode numbers in-sync. Interested to see how the following week will compare. No Christmas double either, it seems. First time since 2013. I figured they’d have done a double on 23rd if they were going to do one at all. I doubt this will be amended in final listings because the The Simpsons episodes beforehand all seem meticulously selected for their Christmas theme, rather than being generic placeholders.

With the final week of the year also being 4-episodes, my listings are currently showing that a number isn’t being skipped here. Maybe this will be fixed in an update, but there’s also a chance it could mean that they are using this opportunity to switch the blocks over to fully match the E4 airings (currently the blocks are made to run Monday-Friday on C4). This is something I don’t want to happen personally, as making the E4 showing the primary showing is another step closer to the end.

Hey! People don't seem to have any questions to ask anymore (so thank you!), so I simply stopped checking (hence why I'm only just replying to this). I really miss answering questions, especially about the sets - but Tumblr as a platform doesn't really do anything for me anymore - it's just a dashboard spammed full of stuff that doesn't interest me. :D

Hiya! I rarely even open Tumblr these days as it's a bit dead! I'm not regularly watching, but I've seen one or two episodes since she has been credited as I'm still part of the Hollyoaks Wiki and Hollyoaks Discord. One was the Black to Front episode, and the other was just a random episode.

It sounds like there have been a shit ton of improvements, but at the same time, they haven't really solved any of the issues that I had with the show. Still, it's early days and there are some really promising things happening.

The winter trailer was the first one in a long time that I haven't cringed through - the first half of that felt quite fun and festive which was nice, as I really do feel Hollyoaks needs an injection of fun.

Which episodes did they drop before?

The dropped episodes seem to come around Christmas/New Year time, and it only started in the past few years. I’m guessing where Channel 4 doesn’t give them enough slots or something, or maybe if the show wants to do something special then they need to use slots from the existing commission.

#4811 was the first dropped episode, from late 2017/early 2018. One half of double-length episode #5040 in November 2018 (Mercedes and Russ’ wedding) probably compensated for the loss, so the overall total was basically corrected.

#5065 is another, from late 2018. One half of double-length episode #5301 in November 2019 (Racism climax) probably compensated for this one.

Channel 4 cut 2 of the slots from late 2019, but instead of dropping episode numbers they used both slots to create the “Hollyoaks Later” double episode (#5336-5337) in January 2020, which got the episode numbers back in sync pretty quickly.

#5402 from April 2020 (County Lines/Mental Health) was another double-length episode, but I’m not sure if this was just Channel 4 starting a new tradition of extended episodes that don’t compensate for something, or if it had been borrowed from late 2020 (which obviously went to pot anyway with the pandemic changes). They’d done the borrowing thing in the past I believe - borrowing an episode from Xmas 2006 to make The Dog Fire a 6 episode week.

I think there’s an extended episode coming up in May 2021, so perhaps it’s the start of a new tradition.

Did you see Hollyoaks is going 5 nights from January 18th?

I did! I’m quite baffled by the decision actually, as they’ve done it in the most backwards way possible.

My original theory for returning to 5 nights w/c 25th was based around the episode numbers (and blocks too, before those switched to 4-eps in October) naturally falling back in sync that week - so Monday episodes would always end in 1 or 6, and Friday episodes end in 5 or 0. I’ve been told in the past that the story/script teams favour this method, I assume because they can instantly know which episodes need end-of-week cliffhangers, etc. Given that in the past they’ve completely dropped episode numbers in order to maintain this pattern (and compensated for them with extended episodes the following Novembers), it seemed obvious that they would be keen to return to previous habits...

So, while it turns out my theory was spot on - they really do value the numbers being in sync - they’ve decided to be awkward and do it a week early, and have manipulated the numbers slightly in order to force the sync. So the episode numbers over the transition now look like this: We 13 Jan - #5505 Th 14 Jan - #5505A (NOT #5506) Mo 18 Jan - #5506 (Monday episode numbers now end in 1 or 6, as desired) Which seems really stupid given they could have just waited one more week and not had to fudge the numbers at all.

Better still, if they were going to use this hacky method - they could have just gone back to 5-nights from 4th January, and the 4 flash forward episodes could have been given the numberings #5495, #5495A, #5495B and #5495C - which would make sense story-wise too, given the whole block was set on one night. I’m not sure if there’s a production reason why it needs to be that week and not the next - perhaps it’s the end of a cycle or something. I know Emmerdale has used letters in their episode numbers in the past for episodes that were commissioned and inserted at a late stage, but that’s not the case here; they’re basically just manipulating the numbers for convenience.

I was actually struggling for Dancy - but early on in their relationship Nancy would often squeak and go really high-pitched (like a mouse). I guess that means the mouse emoji represents Nancy, not Dancy, but I’m open to suggestions. XD

The laptop is a reference to how they got together. Rhys and Jacqui were both working at Chez Chez and didn’t particularly like each other. Gilly encouraged Rhys to join an online dating site, and Myra/Carmel happened to do the same with Jacqui too - both with anonymised profiles. They both ended up matching with each other and were glued to their laptops chatting with each other for a couple of weeks, up until their first date when they both realised who they’d been chatting to and were disgusted with themselves (they soon got over that, while babysitting Tom).

I’ve paid for a DigiGuide subscription since 2005 and the software usually updates on Fridays or Saturdays with the next episode. For some reason it always lists the writer in the “Starring” box, so I’ve amended that above.

My guess for when the show goes back to 5 nights is still week commencing 25th January 2021 - which means we might only have 6 Friday Favourites slots remaining after the ‘98 one I posted above. I’m assuming they will play a Christmas-themed episode on the 25th December, as E4 doesn’t really have a need to pre-empt timeslots like Channel 4 does.

Are all the houses on Ramsey Street two-storey?

Only No 22 Ramsay Street (Paul and Terese’s) is two-storey out of the main six houses. Unless you count things like garages that are technically underneath some of them.

The interior layouts are all wildly different on the real Pin Oak Court houses (i.e. the living area on 22 Ramsay Street/2 Pin Oak Court is upstairs and bedrooms downstairs) but I assume the storeys are the same as on-screen.

Billy price as Sid is possibly one of the only good things in the show right now. He’s a brilliant character and I was wondering what direction you’d like them to take Sid?

Billy Price has been fantastic throughout. I’m so glad that they decided to keep him on full time! My only hopes for Sid is that they move him away from the criminal stuff and don’t kill him off!

What is your opinion on the Cunningham banazar? I think it’s too big and makes the village look crowded

Whilst it’s great to see the Cunningham’s owning a business in the village again, I’m not too keen on the look of the bizarre. It might just be me, but I’m very aware that it’s a set when I’m watching. It doesn’t look like any market I’ve seen in real life.

I don’t think I’ve actually seen what the inside looks like, but my god, the outside is ugly as sin. What an eyesore. It seems they have designed it with the intention of it looking like part of the Chester Rows, except it looks more like a cardboard water tower.
