David KozĂĄk Info â Part 1: Childhood and School Years
Family Background and Home Environment:
The family was described as respectable and well-off, leading a secluded lifestyle.
KozĂĄk was raised quite strictly. Witness quote: âThe father raised the boy in a very simple way. No girls, no parties, no hobbies. He had to study constantly; mainly, he needed excellent results at schoolâ.
KozĂĄk was not involved in village life, had no friends or contact with residents, and spent most of his time at home. A postal worker recalled that he often came to the post office, picked up his parcel, and left without speaking to anyone.
According to village witnesses who saw KozĂĄk, he looked like a boy who probably stayed at home reading books.
KozĂĄk did not attend the local primary school because there were too few children to open a first-grade class, though his sister studied there.
KozĂĄkâs father, Stanislav, was described as kind, intelligent, quiet, and solitary. He held a managerial role in security at Prague Airport, was well-liked by colleagues, and was called âone of the best colleagues and managersâ.
KozĂĄkâs mother, Romana, had a determined character, and worked as a civil engineer. She also served as deputy mayor of the village for two years.
KozĂĄkâs sister was academically successful and worked at the airport. She studied âPopulation Protectionâ at the Czech Technical University, writing a highly rated thesis on airport security measures during crises such as pandemics, fires, and terrorist attacks.
KozĂĄk felt stressed at home, saying his parents pressured him academically and punished him for not completing household duties. He also complained of poor sleep and appetite.
Later, during a psychiatric appointment, he also said he felt pressure from his family to socialize more (which he struggled with).
He described his relationship with his family as the closest relationships he had, but noted that he did not have deeper emotional bonds with them. He called his sister and mother âthe generals of the familyâ.
School Background and Development:
KozĂĄk consistently excelled academically and participated in competitions from school onward. He later received an award from the Polish Institute in Prague for his work on the 1846 KrakĂłw and Galician peasant uprisings.
His classmates confirmed that he studied well and was intelligent. âEveryone thought he would achieve the greatest success among all our classmates,â said one classmate to police.
Despite his strong academics, KozĂĄk struggled socially. Former classmates described him as a quiet, inconspicuous introvert who spoke to very few people.
He had significant difficulties forming contacts with people from a young age, which he later complained about in sessions, saying he âdid not feel themâ and did not understand the concept of friendship.
His romantic life was also unsuccessful. In school years, he awkwardly pursued a girl and behaved in a rather frightening way, resembling stalking. He bought her an expensive birthday gift, but she rejected him and told him not to contact her again.
Some villagers noted that he was willing to talk, or at least tried to talk, with girls, but he was never able to form relationships.
Encouraged by friends to brag, KozĂĄk fired an air rifle at a camp tent where his sister was inside, presenting it as a joke; his father later dismissed concerns, noting they had weapons at home and that David was trained to use them.
In secondary school, he made three friends: two boys and a girl, with whom he remained in very occasional contact even during his university studies.
One friend declined to comment on his relationship with KozĂĄk. Another said that at school they discussed video games, military topics, or history. Witness quote: âWe were united by a shared interest in weapons. Sometimes in upper grades we bought air guns, but we never went out to play togetherâ.
KozĂĄk likely had his closest relationship with a girl who later played a key role in the case, as she accompanied him to a psychiatrist and called a hotline on the day of the crime; however, he did not consider the relationship close, saying they only communicated occasionally.
Mental health issues began in school and worsened at university, especially during lockdowns. Thoughts of death emerged in his teenage years, linked to feelings of emptiness, lack of pleasure, loss of meaning, and unmet self-realization.
Interests and Preferences:
KozĂĄk was interested in anime series with unusual, strange themes, partly pornographic. Witness quote: âIt seemed to me that it was more an attraction to strangeness than to the content itself, or to pornographyâ.
Later, this developed into an interest in a certain type of adult movies, preferably Asian, including films in which women are depicted as zombies or corpses.
He showed interest in true crime, especially cases such as Anders Breivik, Viktor Kalivoda, JiĆĂ Straka, and Czech criminal cases in general.
KozĂĄkâs favorite anime was the sci-fi series All You Need Is Kill, with Keiji Kiriya as his favorite character, whom he wrote about in an essay. The story centers on emotional detachment and a time loop of violence and death.
KozĂĄk clearly had an interest in history; in therapy sessions he mentioned that studying at the Faculty of Arts was one of the few activities that brought him at least partial satisfaction and meaning in life.
His interest in history probably appeared in collecting artifacts; during a search of his home, investigators found a Nazi dagger with a swastika and the inscription âBlut und Ehreâ (âBlood and Honorâ), used by the Hitler Youth.

Oh Dylann, if only you knew how many people loved you.

Original:charlestonchurchmassacre Romantic life:
Certainly, Dylann is embarrassed when the topic of dating is raised. In his evaluation, he declined to answer questions about dating relationships, saying âI canât talk about it.â When asked why, he explained âI canât say. It would give a hint at it.â
A coworker told the social historian that Dylann laughed like it was impossible when the topic of getting a girlfriend was mentioned. Dylann gave his âstrange grinâ and stopped talking as if embarrassed.
Testimony
According to his mother, Dylann said he was never going to get married and no girl would ever date him. His mother said to the social historian that she does not think that Dylann has ever had sex with anyone. She does not know if he has kissed a girl. She said he was highly embarrassed about the topic and if she even tried to ask him about sex, he would say that a mother should not even say the word âsexâ in front of her son. When his mother did discuss sex, Dylann âclammed upâ, left the room, and said âmomâ in an exasperated tone. Â
However Joseph Meek, a former friend of Dylann, with whom he reconnected just weeks before the shooting, told the FBI that he did showed interest in girls since middle school.Â
âJoey recalled that Dylann talked and asked about two Mexican girls that lived in the neighborhood. He said one of the girls was hot and that he had a crush on one of them.â He also stated that Dylann told him that he had sex with a black girl in Eastover.
He declared that Dylann was âattracted to a black girl who was a dancer in the club [Platinum Plus] and that he wanted to talk to her, but never did.
Joey described Dylann as being someone who would talk to girls, but never wanted to ask them out.â Â
When he was asked about Dylannâs behavior inside the club he said that Dylann âliked a light skinned black girl who was small or average build. Dylann wanted a dance from her, but she didnât go up to him. Dylann didnât have the courage to go up to her.â
Lindsey Fry, Meekâs former girlfriend remembers Dylann putting money on the stage to get the black dancers attention: â So they would come over and dance in front of him.âÂ
Another former friend of Dylann, Laura P. said that she only recalls Dylann having one girlfriend, during the 8th grade or 9th grade.Â
Dylannâs attorneys also reported an odd behavior during the jury selection of his federal trial. Indeed he expressed concern regarding a young lady, described as âattractive" who was being interviewed as a potential juror. According to them Dylann didnât want her to be selected because it would âincrease his anxiety.â He reportedly expressed in a âloud whisperâ his outrage and stated that it would âbother him every single day of the trial to know that she is sitting in the jury box looking at him.â
When asking about his relationship and sexual history, Dylann suddenly stopped speaking, turned his head sideways and made a grimacing face. When asked by the examiner if he was o.k., he stated in a strained voice that âI canât talk right now.â After this episode concluded (~ 1. minutes) he reported that he has âpathological blushingâ and that during this episode he felt very hot and uncomfortable. It was notable that no reddening or blushing was evident to the examiner during this time. He refused to speak further about the topics that he felt triggered this episode.
While it is not necessarily unusual for a man in his early 20s to decline to talk about sex with his mother, it is odd that someone Dylannâs age had no known romantic partners at all. This may point to asexuality, which is thought to occur in only 0.5-1% of the population, but may also suggest a lack of social skills required for effective dating, or a diffuse sexual identity.
Sexual OrientationÂ
Several people who were interviewed stated that they were unclear about Dylannâs sexual orientation.
Dylannâs sister, Amber, in one interview said she thought he might be gay and, in another interview suggested he might be asexual. Amber noted that their father always âwanted Dylann to be more sportyâ and âbe a boy.â
Reverend Metze, said that Dylann was ânot normalâ and possibly struggling with his sexuality.
His former stepmother, Paige Mann, described him as âalways differentâ but said she assumed he seemed odd âbecause he was gay.â
Journals
In the journal his wrote before his arrest on June 18, 2015,  Dylann stated: âOne of my only regrets is that I was never able to fall in love.âÂ
In the journal he wrote while awaiting his trial in the Charleston jail, he talked more about his desires to have a family:  âI donât have a child but I wish I did and I regret not being able to before I did what I did. I can only imagine the love a parent must feel for their children, especially when young.â And further âI would have love to adopt a white child if I had the means.â
