Project 5
I wanted to explore the idea of changing who I am with shaving cream. As a kid, my parents would let us "draw" with shaving cream on the table and I wanted to do the same sort of thing by "drawing" on my face. I thought it was an interesting representation of a mask and it "masking" who I am.
Project 6: Open Work
I included two different things in here because I figure, why not? The lighthouse painting was actually based off a drawing that I did several years ago and one of my friends wanted a painting of it. So I used acrylic paint on canvas and recreated my black and white drawing, but made it in color this time. The other was an addition onto the collage project. For my new collage, I wanted to change the theme a little and make it more focused on the car. I own a 280z 2+2 which inspired me to take a picture of another 280z and add in the different background, print it in black and white, and then add color to certain parts. Strategically placed and highlighted graffiti right above the car claims that it is "the best." Not just a coincidence that I placed that there. . .
This piece is very cool. I love how the lights on the side seem to blur to the point where they are almost just one continuous line. I could see this as what people feel like they see when they are driving because everyone seems to be in the biggest hurry, all the time.
I love the sense of movement felt with this piece. It isn't much, but it is enough that the viewer seems to get a sense of music and beat with the movement that is given.
All together now!
Feeling it. I like how random this is and you seemed to capture the best parts of the whole video.
Project #3.
My series is called "Language is Dead." I designed these to create messages about how live is usually censored and then to the extreme that there is no other words other than curse words. I was trying to make images that would speak to the point that it seems like in a world filled with language, there really isn't much left. The words that we do speak/write are censored and then there is nothing else left.
I just found these funny. Some are very relate-able, like the last one and some are from good tv shows. Of course, everyone likes animal gifs lol.
Reading Response #3
I find it interesting that these are now being sold in auction or otherwise. I do think of it as a very interesting and creative way of making art, but I personally would have never thought that it would be capable of getting paid for selling one. I do believe that it is a huge step in the art world and something that benefits all artists in being able to expand their artwork if they so desire. I love the fact that these were around way before the internet and it is kind of cool to see that it has lasted as long as they have.
Artist Statement #2
My inspiration for this project was to essentially try and capture how love is fleeting, dark, and beautiful all at once. I chose to collect photos that depict the shape of a heart in unexpected places. I then made the choice to turn the heart black to emphasize how painful it can be to love and then to lose it. It was my goal to contrast a dark heart with the beautiful content of each photo.
I think using a black heart was a nice way to make it stand out from the rest of the image as well as getting your point across about how love is fleeting and dark. You have an interesting choice in subject and I love how they are all connected but still clearly different. It would be interesting to see it vice versa as well, if everything else was black and white and the hearts were in different colors depending on the subject.
Selections
This group of pictures represents a few of my favorite artists, bands, and groups. When I listen to them I feel like this is what I hear, if it was in color. It kind of felt like I was hallucinating when I was making these pieces, but I assure you that no laws were broken during the making of these pieces.
Just to clarify: I live in the Caribbean and cannot print out the pictures (we don’t have a Staples or Officemax… There are not even postmen here, we have to go into town to pick up mail!) , so I had to improvise on my computer which means that I never drew on the pictures physically and I cannot take a picture of them “like they were in a gallery.” Tumblr is my gallery.
I'm glad that somebody else feels the same sort of thing. Whenever I listen to music, I do see certain colors and images that would go along with it. I love your use of color. The fact that you have the bands/musicians in black and white and the emotions that you see in color comes across really well. It is easy to read and your concept is clearly understood.
Project #2
I paint with acrylics and I have a huge archive of reference photos that I collect. The archive I use the most is trees, forests, woods, nature, etc; I chose this for my archive theme for Project #2. To the original photos I chose, I superimposed a thin layer of powerful moments in my life. Then I photo shopped selections from some of my acrylic paintings; blending them in a smooth and controlled manner to create one cohesive image. My purpose was to blur the lines between the real world and the pretend. I wanted this to be an exercise in examination, in never assuming what you are seeing is all there is. After printing them in black and white I used acrylic paint to add color to the original image, paint over previously painted selections, and painted new selections from my imagination at the moment. These images also represent selections of my journey. I chose to share my blessings, my love, my tremendous grief, my dreams, my hope, and my healing.
I love how your images do create a narrative and really do tell a story. I love how you have them all hung up together and it helps convey the idea of a narrative and I think it gives it a great overall quality. The use of color was excellent in my opinion. It really pops from the black and white and is vibrant enough but not too overbearing.
Project #2: Selections
"The Nuclear Family"
For this project I had the basic idea of taking photos of idyllic 1950’s settings and infusing Cold War/nuclear propaganda with them. What came of it was “The Nuclear Family”, a tongue-in-cheek look at the post-nuclear war America and how it tries to retain its sense of wholesome dignity in the aftermath of total devastation. I tried to mainly play on the concepts of surrealism and dissonance.
Very interesting. I love the concept that you went with for this project. The 1950s are considered by some as the "golden age" and it is interesting to see the bad alongside the good. I love how the pieces that you added in seem to be so natural and could be seen as not out of place at all.
Project 2: Selections
"The Wild Within"
First off, I really enjoyed working on this project. I felt like I could express myself creatively and that my work turned out close to what I was imagining (I’m realizing I tend to have grand ideas that don’t come out as hoped). I first went through lots of antique photos and was drawn be the ones of young women who, in most photos, are posed to be looking down or away, mostly not directly at the camera. I then decided to go on to find antique landscape photos and layer them. From there I used chalk pastels to create a monotone effect for each photo. The title for the series is “The Wild Within”. It aims to address the conforms these young women were bound to, but yet the “wild” spirit that they may have had.
I love these images. The way that you used the pastels seemed to bring out certain aspects of the image without overpowering it. It is interesting to see all of those older photos where women aren't looking at the camera and I like how you approached it by trying to recognize what they are feeling inside.
For starters, sorry about the white balance in my camera, I evidently need to adjust that.
Machines of the Art Age
I wanted to build a series based on the art of the 20th/21st century, but wanted to add a twist. There were several artists in the early 1900s that were artists, designers, and architects. The fact that it was acceptable to do all of those things amazes me and I wanted to express through artwork all of these forms of artwork. I wanted to make the trains and cars the "vehicle" that art used to accelerate into the future of art and design.
