Kid Sherlock screams and cries whenever Mycroft puts an antibiotic on a skinned knee or elbow. This makes Mycroft roll his eyes ("Oh there's no need to be so dramatic Sherlock, this doesn't even sting and you know it." "It does!!! It does!!!"), because he knows for a fact that his reckless little brother can ignore far worse pain when he's playing.

But Sherlock always cheers up when his big brother covers the wound with a bee patterned band-aid. Mycroft carries those band-aids on his person, because Sherlock frequently needs them.

Years later, when Sherlock overdoses for the second time, Mycroft sits by him as he lies unconscious on a hospital bed, and wishes it were still so easy to tend to his brother's hurts. That young man who protested and screamed all the way as Mycroft dragged him to the hospital seems not so different from that little boy who screamed and cried as antibiotic was applied to his knee. But the days when Mycroft had bee patterned band-aids in his pockets are long gone.

But somehow, Sherlock will cheer up a little in the rehab centre when Mycroft finds an operation board game.

Anyone for a Mystrade x Wicked AU?

Am I the only one who came out of Wicked and immediately thought of a Mystrade crossover here?

Mycroft as the ostracised elder brother, escorting his wheelchair bound little brother Sherlock to university. Mycroft blames himself for Sherlocks state, a result of one too many experiments with drugs which resulted in devastating impacts. Mycroft should have kept a closer eye on him, Sherlock, who was always the favoured son, Mycroft who was always the outcast due to his unnaturally green skin and sharp intellect.

Enter Greg Lestrade, gorgeous bad boy and the most popular boy at school. Everyone either wants to be him or date him. Mycroft ends up roomed with him and the two immediately clash. But its all one sided unresolved sexual tension and pining on Greg’s side. John Watson has eyes on Greg, but Greg in a desperate attempt to divert him sends him Sherlock's way. Sherlock, forever grateful, sings Greg’s praises to Mycroft who thinks maybe he has been too harsh in judging Greg based purely on his beauty and apparent shallowness.

The two become friends, best friends. Greg wants more but doesn’t want to push Mycroft away. Mycroft begins to notice that Greg seems to be genuinely concerned that something bad is happening in Oz. When Greg and Mycroft unite to free a talking animal, there is a moment where Greg tries to reach out to him, before Mycroft is spooked and runs away. Mycroft realises there’s more to Greg than his shallow bad-boy persona and laments that he could never be that boy for popular, beautiful Greg.

Mycroft is summoned to see the Wizard. He begs Greg to come with him, and they adventure for one short day in the Emerald City. They meet the Wizard, who they discover is the source of all the discord in Oz. They both understand that this can not continue, but are at odds as to how to make it right. In the end, Mycroft rebels and runs away but Greg is stopped by the Wizard and can not follow Mycroft along the path he has chosen. Greg ends up a puppet for the Wizard (thinly veiled threats against those he hold dear being used to keep him in line) whilst Mycroft forms an underground rebellion.

Mycroft is heartbroken to think that Greg has turned against him. But there is a spy in the Wizards midst, passing on information to the underground rebellion. One night the spy arranges to meet Mycroft, who is surprised to see that Greg is the one who has been passing on information. They declare their love and for the first time, Mycroft feels truly “wicked” ;)

But the Wizard’s guards turn up and manage to capture Greg, declaring him a traitor. Mycroft in a desperate attempt to spare the man he loves from further pain manages a spell that turns him to straw.

Captured and interrogated for information on Mycroft, Greg despairs until he is rescued by Sherlock and John. The three conspire to convince the Wizard that Mycroft can only be stopped by being melted with water. The lie gathers momentum and they manage to fake Mycroft’s death, taking out the Wizard in the process. Mycroft is blamed for the Wizard’s untimely demise, and no one mourns the wicked.

Greg and Mycroft are reunited and escape together. Sherlock takes over the mantle of ruler of Oz with John at his side, and they all live happily ever after.

Having dived into the BBC Sherlock fandom like.. 3-4 months ago (?), I've a complicated relationship with TFP. The episode itself makes no goddamn sense within the timeline or the season, let alone the overall narrative. But I do genuinely like some parts of the episode, particularly Mycroft's role within the episode. He's revealed to be just as emotional and caring as Sherlock is (if not more), because he loves his brother so much. He's willing to die at the hands of the one he loves the most just so that Sherlock doesn't have to lose John.

And if that doesn't break your heart, I don't know what will. I adore the Mycroft angst, and that scene with Sherlock having to choose between John and Mycroft is the, in my opinion, best part of this shitshow of an episode.

Also Sherlock's emotions, I suppose. I like how the cold, aloof and emotionless detective we saw in ASiP is genuinely so emotional and has grown so much that he recognises his sister's turmoil (even if it made no fucking sense), breaks the coffin when Molly has to confess to him (and I say this hating that scene) and begs Eurus to help him save John Watson (his whole life's motive at this point; fight me).

But it doesn't make any sense, and I honestly don't know how to deal with it in my fanfictions. Sigh. Maybe I'll just go canon-divergent after TLD.
