A funny thing happened on the way to Monza . . .

How many times have you heard Lando fans called crazy? Delusional? It’s nearly a weekly thing.

However somewhere between Zandvoort and Monza, all the stories that back up pretty much everything Lando fans have been saying for years came out, from various sources, on different days.

In order:-

1. Oscar has never had a challenge like his battle with Lando in any of his other championships.

Mentioning this one would have cries of bitter or invalidating Oscar’s success. And then Oscar himself admitted this is his toughest battle.

This was followed on the Friday of Monza by Karun Chandock telling us all, Oscar has form of having a comfortable lead in a championship and watching it slowly disappear before his eyes. Only winning his F3 title due to a mechanical failure for Logan Sergeant.

2. Oscar relays heavily on Lando’s data.

Juan Pablo Montoya, someone who has recently said he thinks Oscar will win the championship, on Saturday morning, before FP3, said on live tv. Oscar needs Lando to have good sessions so he can learn from the data.

Well haven’t we been saying that for months? Oscar never has a good FP1.

3. Lando was never allowed to go for the win in Monza 2021 due to team orders.

Yeah, people will still tell you with their full chest Daniel had it all under control. Ted Kravitz brought this up twice on Saturday that it might feel for Lando, unfinished business as he was told in 2021 he had to finish 2nd by the team.

Given Daniel’s time at McLaren and what followed AND the overtake Lando pulled off on Charles in that race, are we certain that Lando wouldn’t have taken him?

4. Hungary 24 was a gifted win for Oscar facilitated by team orders.

Oscar has never acknowledged the fact he had put himself out of contention for the win in Hungary and that without the help of the team, he would have finished 2nd. In fact he has always insisted it was a legitimate win.

Right up until McLaren came in over the team radio and reminded him the only reason Lando let him past that day was team orders. And it was time to return the favour. 😬

Even Oscar’s clap back on the radio “I thought slow pitstops were part of racing” doesn’t stack up, as in Hungary he had had a slow pitstop after going long in his box. The team still ordered Lando aside.

Funny isn’t it? The grief Lando fans get and yet all of sudden everyone BUT US has receipts.

If you look on social media apparently McLaren lost that race for Oscar by favouring Lando.

Before we blame the team ask yourself, why at the start of the race did he choose to defend Lando rather than go for Charles?

Why didnt he try and overtake Charles when Lando wasn’t an issue and give himself clean air?

When offered the one stop option why did Oscar not take it?

At the end of the race he had better tyres but only had one tactic to get past Lando, a dive bomb. Yet all we hear is about Oscar’s “superior racecraft”.

To me his obsession with Lando cost him that race, not anything Lando or the team did.

Last year everyone was on at Lando for constantly worrying about Max rather than just trying to win the race, because Max wasn’t worrying about him. Why can’t people see that now it’s Oscar the one that’s more worried about his rival and Lando the one just attacking the race?

Lando’s race was on life support and the one stop option was a Hail Mary to keep him on the podium. At the time no one knew it would work, let alone it would be a winning strategy. As James Hinchcliffe said “it wasn’t the preferred strategy, it became the preferred strategy”.

And respect is due to Lando for making it work, because all indications said it should have been 18 seconds slower over the race. Pirelli weren’t sure the tyres would last 30 laps let alone 40. Lando dug deep into his experience, knowledge and tyre management skills and MADE it work.

McLaren gave both drivers what they wanted and asked for. McLaren gave them both blistering pitstops. What they didn’t do was play favourites and give team orders. And if you think they did, you really need this three weeks away from F1.

So I’m confused as I read this . . . .

… as they had two of the upgrade and that Oscar would run them Friday, Lando not and the team would decide on Saturday which of the two set ups to run on both cars for the weekend.

And now we’re here . . .

From the information we have, Lando has been the quicker of the two all day, and is still the championship leader, so logic would say he gets them.

Also Oscar seemed quicker without them. And Lando was doing the better long run pace without them earlier in the day. (Yes I know we don’t know fuel loads or engine modes).

Maybe the best course of action is not to put them on either car for this race, as they may be quicker without.

This may come down to something as simple as, which set up does Lando feel he has more control in the car over. Because if there is one thing we know, McLaren will always prioritise a 1-2 finish and a more comfortable Lando increases the odds of that.

Again McLaren making us question what exact support of mental health in the workplace they do!

So Andrea Stella now admits that they had stuck a last minute change on Lando’s car for Q3 in Bahrain.

And we have all seen the data tracking that showed Oscar slowing and hurting Lando’s tyre prep on the same Q3 run, so the pitwall must have seen it at the time.

And yet you let the driver go into press after quali and say “I’m the problem”!!!!

Rachel knew instantly something was off as she told him, “that’s not like you” and waited for a more serious answer, that’s never came.

And then 4 DAYS later McLaren admit they knew instantly what the issue was. Are you taking the piss?

This team is trying my patience right now and I’m not gonna tempt fate and say it with the way I feel right now, but my God it would serve you right.

Lando's Boys

so I did a poll and people really took me up on it to introduce "Lando's Boys" - aka the mechanics and engineers we see most often with Lando

now I will say this doesn't have everyone, because McLaren have good crew rotation so this is a post primarily about the main group of lads we see with Lando, now without further ado

Lando's main man, been with him for over a decade now, his trainer his massage therapist his buddy his big bro his babysitter, he needs no introduction....

next we have Lando's head mechanic, another man who's been with Lando since his McLaren journey started, even during Lando's apprentice years we've seen him

Kyle ✨

usually seen in the special jack man yellow suit, he's tall, he's often been seen cradling Lando's face or screaming in a video rushing to the podium, he caught Lando for the crowd surfing in Miami

Bert (also known as Frazer but he goes by Bert)

next we have another mechanic, works closely with Kyle, you can see him firmly holding Lando's hand more than the others in the video of Lando celebrating with the crew after his AD win

Naylor (aka Michael Naylor)

another man really who needs no introduction, we've all seen him, we all know him, we all feel like him with the giant heart eyes, we're gonna miss him being trackside terribly

Michael

newer than the 4 above but no less important, can be seen buckling in Lando on occasion, is also the man I credit for Lando's Silvo podium in 23 for his cheeky comment of "long way to the podium from here"

Liam

another man who's been with Lando a long time but from what I can find is a pretty private guy but was there right beside Kyle on the grid to hug Lando once he got out of the car (apologies for the low quality of this one)

Richard

next we have engineers, this is Jarv, Jarv worked with Lando in 2019 (he then left to other ventures before coming back to F1 at the end of 23) and is the voice behind the ICONIC tyre breakdown radio message and also "oh no.. me shooooeeees"

and this is Will, we all know Will by now there's a post here about Will for more detail on him
