they say some accidents are meant to happen.

this one, unfortunately, could have easily been avoided if: 1) joohyuk did not get distracted by the ethereal beauty that is han seorin when she's making breakfast in her pyjamas and left home 10 minutes earlier; 2) joohyuk decided to take the elevator down instead of opting for the rush down the stairs to "wake his legs up"; and 3) joohyuk only looked at where he was going, walking and descending.

instead of the damned steps, he'd glanced up from them when he reached the second floor upon noticing yubin at the first. his first instinct was to yell her name to get her attention, but before he could even open his mouth, his foot ended up landing on an imaginary step, causing him to immediately lose balance, take momentary flight, and tumble down the flight of stairs, a yelp escaping him with every hit his shoulders took against the hard concrete and metal rails.

joohyuk announces his arrival to his destination painfully dramatically, with a loud groan accompanying the thud of his back on the ground. the sun peeks from behind the clouds and hits him directly in the eye with its gleam, almost like it's mocking his morning and eager to add to his misery. the man pitifully shields his gaze with the back of his hand before pleading to the figure approaching him, the same person he intended to call out to from where he earlier stood:

"noona. if it just so happens that you're not in a rush... can you help me up from the floor of shame before anyone else sees me like this and takes my picture?"

while it wasn't often that yubin had a day off and was eager to get out of bed, she'd actually had a refreshing sleep and naturally awoke before her alarm went off. naturally, she decided to reward herself with a sweet little treat, heading down to the coffee shop for whatever baked good caught her eye first. she even got whipped cream on her drink! it was a good morning. and yet, in the back of her mind, something felt... off.

whatever the feeling was, it was akin to the slight suspicion that she was moments away from a "went to school without pants on" nightmare reveal. but really, it was just a gut feeling and nothing more, so she did her best to push the feeling back even further into the deep recesses of her brain, instead choosing to focus on the simple bliss of artificial strawberry hitting her tongue.

she looked up just in time to see joohyuk descending the steps, perking up a bit and starting to raise her hand to wave. however, in some sort of sick and twisted turn of events, as though she somehow accidentally manifested disaster, yubin watched in absolute horror as the man before her became much more horizontal. somewhere past the secondhand embarrassment and the phantom pains of her own past stair-related oopsies, she almost thought it was impressive; all the speed of a slinky, with none of the grace and form, truly.

hurrying over to him, she carefully holds her coffee and her pastry in one hand, the other reaching for her phone in her pocket before kneeling down next to him. "oh my god, did you hit your head? is anything broken? do you need an ambulance?" she speaks quiet but frantic, some sort of bizarre whisper-yell, not wanting to attract any additional attention to the grand mishap that she's just bared witness to. "i can text seorin, if you'd rather-"

sejoon had to blink for a few moments to register the possibility he'd actually done something correctly. taking another good look at the fabric he was gripping and then at yubin's phone, he envisioned precisely what she was talking about. "oh yeah! yeah, i see what you mean! like when the waves are crashing on the shore and lighter shades of blue come out until you get to white..." he agreed, nodding his head and retrieving the chosen drapes. "these'll go great with the sand-colored throw rug we got too," he chirps, confirming his suspicions as he placed the curtains on top of the rug.

he sends a glance back toward the draperies, an inquisitive expression dominating his features. "so i guess that means we need to pick out some lighter shades now?" is his next question, choosing instead to follow her lead rather than taking it upon himself to choose. he was okay at color coordination to a certain extent, but differing shades of blue that would mesh well together was outside of his wheelhouse.

"this one's all yours," he offered sheepishly, an arm leaning on their squeaky cart. he ignored the 'aws' and giggles of adoration from two elderly women who passed them in the aisle, knowing full well they probably thought he and yubin were a young couple preparing to move in together. his cheeks felt warm until their presence finally passed, refocusing his eyes on the task at hand. "so, how long have you been an interior designer?" he queried, in hopes of making some casual conversation.

"yes, exactly! we can also look for some darker tans for that sort of wet sand look. ooh, or a splash of green for kelp." yubin's face lit up with a pleased smile as the vision came together in his head, giving an approving nod as he added the curtains to the shopping cart. for as much as she loved being able to take charge and get the job done, she also loved when her clients actually cared and contributed to the final product. "we can go look at throw pillows and blankets next, make the couch a cohesive part of the vision."

she returns her attention to the aisle wall in front of her, humming as she does, barely even registering the pair of women passing through the space. aside from politely stepping out of the way, she was too focused on the thrill of the hunt to really pay them any mind. it was only when she glanced over, perked up from his question, and noticed the slight color in his face that she connected a few of the dots in her head. she giggled, mostly to herself, finally grabbing two different styles of white curtains and returning to the cart.

"well, it depends on what you would consider to be my true starting point. i started an internship in university, but went full-time career after graduation." she explained while looking over the two options in her hands, brow furrowed by the debate happening in her own head. she held them both up for sejoon to look over, her head tilted towards the respective options as she weighed the pros and cons. "the ruffles on these would match that foamy surf vibe better but they're heavy, and the straight ones are way lighter and breezier but feel a bit... bland? i'm biased towards frills, though."

it was as yubin stepped out onto the floor just below her own that the thought occurred to her - how strange, and possibly concerning, she must appear to any potential passersby. after all, it wasn't every day that someone styled in old sweatpants and a teen fiction-worthy messy ponytail approached their neighbors' apartment with a small rubber mallet in-hand; at least, not without a definitive aura of a steadily built rage from back and forth noise complaints radiating off of them.

but no, she was not making her way to seorin and joohyuk's door with intentions of picking a fight. quite the opposite, actually. when seorin expressed her frustrations over her art supplies becoming unmanageable in their small living space, yubin was quick to formulate a game plan in her own head. between the small shelving unit that she'd already dropped off to build later, and the variety of organizational bins tucked securely under her arm, she was on a mission to hopefully ease some of her friend's struggles.

knocking on the door to the unit situated directly under her own, she stood tall, eager to get to work and have a day of companionship.

as the agonizing cries of a squeaky, awkward wheel echoed in his ears, sejoon knew this would likely be the first and last time he got to choose the shopping cart on one of these loft renovation outings. in an attempt to distract his companion from the prospect of rolling her eyes and ditching him in the drapery section for good, he handed out more gratitude for their agreement. "thanks again for doing this! i mean, i know you're getting paid to, but still," he spoke, a lopsided grin joining in the mix.

there were numerous types of curtains hanging in every direction, coming in seemingly every shade known to man. the mission today was garnering items that would transform his boring, regular loft into a beach inspired paradise in dedication to his beloved busan. "hmmm, what about these?" he asked suddenly, lifting up a bit of cerulean fabric that clearly did not match anything else that they'd accrued since they began shopping. not that it mattered, he immediately got sidetracked. "hey look..." he muttered, causing the curtain to move. "the store is haunted!" he bellowed dramatically, making a defined hand shape glide through the fabric.

upon coming to the realization that, once again, he'd slipped solely into 'unhelpful' territory, he cleared his throat awkwardly. "sorry, right. back to the task at hand!"

scanning over all the various colors and textures in front of her while also attempting to tune out the wheel as nothing more than background noise alongside the in-store radio, yubin hummed in recognition, looking over at sejoon with a polite little smile. "i may be getting paid, but you're getting a very generous discount. consider it my own thanks for not frying my brain by way of demanding the most structurally unsound part of your home be open concept with no support beams." she let out a small snort of a laugh, shaking her head as her mind wandered to a particularly difficult client she'd had just a few months earlier.

she could only bring herself to watch him blankly as he moved the curtain, a fleeting thought of 'at least he's cute' floating through her brain in the brief second of silence before he spoke again. she turned her attention towards the curtain that he'd played around with, the lightbulb in her brain flickering on after a moment of consideration. "actually, you know what..."

she held up her pointer finger in his direction as an indication to wait, quickly pulling up a search tab on her phone and typing something in. upon finding her desired result, she let out a quiet sound of triumph. "layered curtains! we could do something darker like those with a lighter, sheer paneling on top. sort of a... sea foam vibe?" she stepped closer to show sejoon the images in question, looking between her phone and his face to gauge a reaction.

she's a superstar at her job! she gets all of her tasks finished on time! she's at the top of her game for client relations! she... has a "laundry chair" in her apartment? she... no. there's no way she actually eats toast off of a paper towel instead of grabbing a plate. for real? uh-huh... oh, but she quadruple checks that she's turned off all the lights and locked her door before leaving for work! woohoo, look at her go!

additional notes:

01. her favorite color isn't even pink. it's light green. 02. it doesn't stop at the laundry chair. she's also exceptionally bad about unpacking from trips and sort of... casually picks what she needs out of her suitcase until it's empty again. 03. her desk isn't a total disaster... but it's close. it's covered in trinkets and work documents, and while she can always find what she needs without an issue, she knows that to an outsider it must look like a nightmare. 04. while she does genuinely prefer eating off of paper towels and napkins in place of proper dishes when she's snacking, she does at least have the decency to use dishes for full meals. she's also very proud of all of her cute coffee cups. 05. she LOVES to collect physical media. books, cds, dvds, the works. if she considers a piece of media to be a favorite, it will inevitably end up on her shelves. 06. her favorite way of incorporating her travels into her personal home decor is by collecting postcards from each location she visits. she also encourages friends to send her some or bring them back for her to put in their own collection, sometimes for inspiration.
