hello! i thought i would formally introduce myself on my first post! my name is chelsea (she/hers) and i was in the dance mom fandom until 2016, then switched over to little dancers. This account is mostly for scrolling/liking/re-blog purposes. I’ve been a shadow/background supporter for almost a year after i lost my passion for editing (but i still support dancers through likes and comments!) i probably won’t post much on here either, but we’ll see how it goes!

So tired of people like you trying to gatekeep hiphop and tell people their way of doing something is wrong! If the kids are having fun who the heck cares if they know the history or whatever. And white people can don’t need to ask black people for permission to do every little thing. Get over yourself!

I’m starting to think y’all are willfully reading what I say and just making up new meanings for it. The gag with this one is, I hardly said anything as all! If little McChickenleigh from Utarizona wants to throw on a bandana and some cargo shorts to pop her back and do a tilt drop to Savage, who am I to stop her? Go be classyboujieratchet, McChickenleigh. Pop that back to your heart’s content. All I (and many others) am saying is the style deserves the same respect other styles are given. It’s not like we’re talking about rec kids here. We’re talking about competitive dancers. That means they are doing it not only for fun, but also to be rewarded. If you are going to seek praise and accolades for a routine in a style that has an entire culture and long history behind it, the least you could do is learn about it and make sure you’re doing it justice. Knowing the history and learning the proper techniques won’t make it any less fun. It can only make them better as dancers.

Hip hop has always been pretty inclusive of all races. As long as people are doing it right, there’s no problem. Nobody is gatekeeping. He didn’t say “don’t do hip hop unless Black leaders in the community say you can,” he said let them help you learn about it so the children can be taught properly. In what other style is it acceptable to have someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing or what they’re taking about teach it? Imagine if just anyone was allowed to teach pointe. It would be a disaster, won’t it? Well, that the competitive dance world has been doing with hip hop is a disaster.

White people were not even mentioned so I’m not understanding where you got that from? Nobody said they need to “ask permission”. Historically, when have they ever asked permission to do anything? Especially anything started by Black people? What he was saying is that anyone who is teaching or offering hip hop classes should be seeking reputable sources to educate themselves and their dancers which is the same thing they do with styles like ballet. If you felt that video was an attack on white people specifically, maybe that’s your own unconscious beliefs clouding your comprehension skills. Cognitive dissonance is alive and well.

You should be establishing a strong foundation in any style before you throw together a routine and push it out on stage. We say the same about the little peewee groups where all the kids are doing us discombobulated leg holds and stepping turns they’re nowhere near ready for. It’s not a wild concept. It should be the expectation and requirement across all styles.

Let’s be real. We all know some studios see things like hip hop, tap, and ballroom as something extra to do on the side. They don’t take it seriously. My question is, why offer it if you aren’t going to fully respect it? I’m sure some only do it because they have to for SOTY at TDA. If you were paying thousands of dollars for your child to train and go to conventions, wouldn’t you wanna be assured that they’re learning a variety of styles and proper technique in every style? What’s the point of paying all that money for a half assed hip hop that is actually just a mockery of the style? Also, hip hop is really an umbrella term. There are soooo many hip hop techniques. There’s no need to be pulling a Light My Fire when there’s so much real hip hop you could choose from.

And at some point, if does become offensive. Seeing little McChickenleighs from the suburbs dress up in what their teachers think is “urban” looking and prance around to “Welcome to My Hood” gets real old, real fast. The tik tok dances instead of real choreo is tired. The full studio hip hop productions with gimmicks to distract from the lack of foundation is the oldest trick in the book. It’s just disrespectful to throw some jazz funk wrapped up with a bandana bow out there and call it hip hop. Anyone can do hip hop. It isn’t exclusive to one race, class, or gender. All we’re asking is that it’s given the respect and dignity it deserves.
