The club is uncharacteristically quiet, empty and well-lit. For the first time since your shift began nearly eight hours ago, there are no screaming customers. The bass has stoped thumping (although you swear you can still hear it ringing in your ears) and the neon lights have stopped flashing. The smoke from the smoke machine has disappeared, the confetti used as a prop during one of the performances has been swept away, and you’re left in near silence as you wipe down the bar.

It’s refreshing to be able to hear your own thoughts without the drunken giggles of this woman or that man. It’s a relief to not have to listen to them gush about the performers, to not hear them argue over who has the better body or the sexiest performance, and it makes you smile to see nothing but empty barstools and tables. There are no more assholes asking to buy you a drink or if you’re going to get up and dance for them. Instead, there’s only quiet and the low hum of classic rock coming from the boss’ office upstairs.

However, you’ve come to learn that in your world, quiet rarely lasts more than a moment.
