For what it's worth, which admittedly isn't a whole lot, here's what the writers said about the Spocklaan stuff in this episode.

"La'an also provided I think a really classic noir trope too, which is not only the paranoia, but looking at the person closest to you to gage whether you are paranoid or not. And we used Spock as their love angle to represent that. And I think they were a great pairing because they're going through some relationship stuff this season. Using him as that backboard for her own psychological breakdown I think is really really fun."

So, take from that what you will.

Strange New Worlds spoilers: A Case of Chiaroscuro

Pros:

-A good episode

-This episode was "Errand of Mercy" "A Piece of The Action " mixed with Casablanca

-Love the "scientific" reason for everything being black and white

-Once again Uhura looks stunning!

-Love M'Benga mentoring Uhura + their friendship

-Uhura would make a good spy, which is something she does in beta canon

-The costumes in this episode were really good

-Happy to see more of M'benga

-Babs Olusanmokun is such a good actor! He carried this episode imo

-I do like that they showed the Klingons as competent, they run a massive empire that can challenge the entire federation, more Klingon characters should be like the ones from "The Undiscovered Country" they were very interesting

-I feel like Pike and Spock are feeling a bit suspicious of La'an. I wonder what they're going to do with that relationship.

Cons:

-Why are they making Chapel/Starfleet as an organization so sneaky? Yes it's not a utopia but you'd think they'd have better communication as to when a protocol is no longer effective and harms more than it hurts.

-People in charge of SNW insist on almost only casting Black actors to play Klingons, which in 2026 is very much a choice...

-Rude Vulcan again omg, why do they write every Vulcan this way. They love a stock character for all of the original aliens and it's getting very old lol

-I feel like they're setting up La'an for a disappointing ending. When Spock told her he thinks her assumptions are wrong and the whole bridge kinda looked at her and she left, idk seems like something messy may happen

4.03 "Human Best Friend" STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS (2022–)

SPOILERS FOR STRANGE NEW WORLDS EPISODE 3: Human Best Friend

-Very fun episode

-Uhura looks so good, that outfit, the makeup, all of it 10/10

-Total eclipse of the heart sung in Klingon + dramatic pop ballads being a kilngon thing is so fun

-"My mind to your leaves, my thoughts to your root system" lmfao

-I think SNW is kinda cheating us of the Kirk/Spock backstory. In TOS they clearly have a close friendship, however now with SNW canon this close friendship is due to:

1) A work related mind meld

2)High Spock telling all his secrets to what he thought was an imaginary Kirk

They could've shown a more mutual connection and organic growth into a friendship rather than circumstances forcing a closeness

Like if Ortegas was a TOS character that was shown in TOS to be close friends with Scotty, this episode would've explained how they became friends in a much more holistic way than the way they show the origins of the Kirk/Spock relationship

-Love the friendship between Erica, Scotty and Uhura, they are the SNW trio I hope to see more of

-Very good episode overall

Edit: This isn't a spirk shipping post, I just don't think the move from strangers to friends was portrayed well. Also I don't think Spock's romantic relationships in snw are ooc.

I think the lack of genuine interactions between kirk and spock in SNW is due to the writers engaging prematurely in closeness for fan service purposes.

Very good snw episode

The griffin incident = the haunted house episode

-Poor Spock, La’an and Kirk, what was all that. Scary tbh

-Poor T’pring, between the way the Ghost? made her appear and ghost Una’s comment about not liking her, how much of all of that is just the ghost and how much is tangled with Spock’s inner view of her

-The snw writers have the chance to be so messy and get Spock and Chapel back together

-Kirk being a deadbeat dad is crazy lol yet lore accurate

-And that foreshadowing to Kirk about how his son will pass. Spooky stuff lol

headcanon that a ferengi tradition is putting your new baby up for sale at a ridiculous price to show how valuable they are to you (everyone has to be polite and not actually buy them or hands will be thrown, people will be sued, etc etc)

I love the idea of Ferengi traditions that are both ha-ha capitalism but also create a functioning culture that’s more than a metaphor.

So, this is related to a headcanon I have. There's a kind of ritual sale of childhood goods as part of the Ferengi coming-of-age, which was featured in an episode of DS9. The ostensible purpose is to raise capital for the young Ferengi male. But, like, if the Ferengi were approaching this in their usual capitalistic mindset, you wouldn't really get much from what's basically a glorified garage sale

My headcanon is that it is the accepted practice to buy those goods at much higher prices than you would normally pay, serving as a culturally acceptable way of effectively giving financial support

Oh I love these, especially because of the spoken and unspoken meta-traditions around the tradition! Maybe they work similarly to the “speak now or forever hold your peace” thing in human marriage ceremonies. Everyone at a human wedding understands you’re not actually supposed to say anything at that point, it’s just a formality—but you see characters do it all the time in literature and entertainment, because it makes for such a juicy plot twist.

I bet “newborn gets purchased by evil jealous ex-business partner” is a classic plot hook in Ferengi soap operas. It’s their version of getting sold to One Direction.
