my favorite lingusics fact is the way languages are effected by The Principle of Least Effort, which is the reason for contractions and abbreviations, and the combination of two words into one, like "wanna" from "want to".

its also the reason that consonants become softer as languages evolve, and why most languages have an upper class dialect with stricter language rules, while dialects with more "lazy" styles are treated as lower class.

also also its the reason linguistics believe the earliest languages used clicks, because its such a complex vocal sound, most languages have evolved away from it

thank u for letting me rant abt this, i listened to an audiobook a decade ago and i've been waiting for an opportunity ever since!

It is absolutely wild to me that people will watch Star Trek and apparently love it and entirely miss the point.

Trek is made by fallible humans; some of it was never great, some of it has aged poorly. But it was demonstrably from the start trying to show humanity at its best, trying to imagine a future without all the petty bigotries of the present. Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations is right there in the show from its original incarnation!

And yet people come and go oh well my bigotry is logical-
