some lighting practice with my boy!
If Ralsei is some kind of monstersona Kris made as a kid, or the personification of Kris desire to be a monster to fit in among their family, or some kind of drawing Asriel made as a kid where he pictured what his new sibling would be like, or anything similar... I can't imagine exploring the ramifications of that and not exploring Ralsei's gender a little.
Again, this is only presuming that Ralsei is an object that represents those things for Kris. I'm not saying it's definitely what Ralsei truly is. But despite how common this kind of theories are, I feel like this is something that doesn't tend to come up in conversations about it?
It just feels weird to have Ralsei being born from the expectations pushed onto Kris by their family, or how Kris imagined a sona that would fit in better, and not touch the fact that Ralsei is a boy while Kris is not. The clear implication here is that Kris felt their family would like them better if they were a boy.
So all things considered I feel like not exploring Ralsei's gender is kinda a depressing end for both Kris and Ralsei, thematically? Like yeah Kris you know what, you were right, that ideal self you imagined as a kid that would fit in better and everyone would like more was a boy. Unlike you.
Ralsei's entire arc is about learning that it's alright for him to be his own person beyond what's expected for him. He has terrible sense of self-worth and believes that his only purpose in life is to help Lightners. This all fits well with the idea that he was born out of external expectations pushed onto Kris: Ralsei feels his mission in life is to fullfil other people's expectations, not to live for himself.
Being a boy is like the one thing about Ralsei's identity that is clearly defined in chapter 1 and that's entirely because being a prince is his role in the prophecy. He deliberately makes himself a blank state but except for his prophecy role. This is because it doesn't even cross Ralsei's mind that those roles are something that can be questioned, it's just something set in stone. If his arc is about questioning external expectations pushed onto him, including the roles in the prophecy, I don't think it's out of the question for Ralsei to question if he is really a boy because he feels he is one or because the prophecy expects him to be.
If Ralsei ends up realizing 'wait I'm not a boy' you get both Ralsei questioning his role in the prophecy and the representation of "Kris would fit in better if they were a boy" deciding "wait no I'm not a boy". It works thematically for both characters.
And honestly this is why it's really annoying when people say that transfem Ralsei headcanons are based on gender stereotypes, because I think there's a non-zero possibility that Ralsei is not a boy and it has everything to do with narrative and thematic reasons. Pretty much every transfem Ralsei headcanon post I've seen has also been about similar thematic reasons related to how Ralsei molds his entire self around his role in the prophecy and pleasing others while denying himself the right to have his own identity. Ralsei having feminine interests is like hilariously irrelevant to this whole thing, yet try to explain that to some people.
My thoughts on the prophecy post chapter 3 & 4
Get ready for disorganized, non double-checked, and probably inaccurate ramblings concerning the Prophecy. Please feel free to factcheck me ofc!
Note- I use the Snowgrave Route to refer to the Weird Route. "Queer" is a blanket term for LGBTQ+ people.
Anyway, here's what I think will happen:
The normal route will break the prophecy, and the weird route will fulfill the prophecy.
From what I've seen, this actually isn't as popular of an opinion as I thought it'd be. Anyways, why do I think so?
First of all, Toby Fox's track record of queer characters.
First of all, in Undertale, there are a variety of implied queer or trans characters. Practically all of the ghost characters could be viewed as trans or gender non-conforming, especially Mad Mew Mew. The lion taking inspiration from Mettaton (another very non gender-conforming character) near the end of the game is also likely meant to be trans. And then, of course, how could anyone miss the blatant gay and lesbian representation from Alphyne and the two knights?
Then, in Deltarune, a variety of our main characters are queer. Noelle and Susie are sapphic at the very least. Kris is non-binary, or at least uses exclusively they/them. Rouxls is practically confirmed bisexual in the new chapter, as well as polyamorous with the Weather Duo (and Starwalker, sure). Spamtenna is... complicated, at best.
Now, why would this be relevant?
Well, queer people are constantly seen as the outliers of society, in a sense. We don't fit the mold, don't fit in with the identity that a cis-hetoronormative society has created for us. We break the prophecy that has been written by the "normal" people around us- so why would Toby Fox, an author who incudes a variety of fantastic queer stories within his works, write a story where the ending implies that the role that society provides to you- the "prophecy", if you will- is one that you must inevitably play, and one that cannot be subverted?
And then, of course, we go back to the Snowgrave route, and we see how the queer characters are twisted into something they very clearly aren't. Kris, a very likely non-binary character, is forced by the player into a very toxic heteronormative relationship with a character implied to be a lesbian- Noelle- that has previously been shown to be appalled at being the object of romantic interest for a man (though, to be fair, the man was Berdly, so...). Snowgrave, the spell that we force Noelle to use in the Snowgrave route, is a spell she doesn't know- a spell that's not part of her identity, in a sense, in the way it isn't meant to be part of her moveset. The way we force the spell onto Noelle, through the Thorn Ring, actively hurts her. The Snowgrave Route erases identity, especially queer identity, the same way that society at large tends to do to queer people growing up.
The Snowgrave Route erases queer identity in the same way society does, and the Prophecy erases the character's freedom in the same way society erases queer identities.
Second of all, it's worth noting the Prophecy's connection to religion.
Please note that I was raised atheist and have no relationship with religion or religious trauma, so I might get things wrong.
Religion has long been used to enforce specific doctrines and beliefs onto the children that grow up within its ranks. i have personally seen countless stories online of queer people that either became disillusioned with religion after realizing their queer identities, or were forcibly ostracized from their own religion upon coming out. Hell, some people go as far as justifying their crimes using their religious doctrine- take the countries in the Middle East that enforce the death penalty for homosexuality, for example, under the guise of religious justification.
Religion can be a good thing in some circumstances, of course. In Deltarune itself, we see the religion of Hometown form a community within the town. Church is shown to be an integral part of the childhoods of multiple characters. Gerson's books are written using inspiration from the Prophecy.
But that doesn't negate the role religion often plays in society as a whole. For many places, religion is the moral justification and the social standard. It enforces the people its followers become and encourages the specific, often heteronormative roles they must play.
And what is the religion of Hometown? The Prophecy.
It's actually worth noting, in this case, that Gerson specifically tells Susie that she would play the role of the dragon in Lord of the Hammer, not the hero. The antagonist in a Prophecy inspired narrative, not the protagonist- as religious people often view queer people (like Susie) to be.
But IDK, isn't the Snowgrave Route all about breaking the code?
There's a reason queer people often refer to their queerness as their identity.
Queerness is immutable and integral to someone's existence. If I could choose not to be queer, I probably wouldn't've ever been queer in the first place, but I'm still here. I can't just choose to be cisgender, because queerness isn't a choice. It's just how my psyche works, and that isn't something that just changes.
This is all my interpretation, of course, but there's an argument to be made that the code itself is the identity of Deltarune, the story, the game. Just like my psyche, the code of Deltarune is immutable and dictates how it functions on a fundamental level.
The Snowgrave Route, just as it overrides the identity of the characters, attempts to override the game's programming. Its identity.
And perhaps the most ironic thing is that the Snowgrave route will never be able to erase the programming that creates the Normal Route- the route where the characters (i predict) will subvert the prophecy and live out their queer identities, just as queer identities themselves are impossible to erase, no matter how much outside influences try.
And like, come on, we all know what happened in Undertale with "it's kill or be killed", right?
Anyway, you should watch Why Kris Being Nonbinary Matters because it's a really good video and everyone should watch it, in my opinion.
Remember, this is all just my thoughts! Toby Fox might prove me wrong, and my interpretation isn't universal.

the funny day is finally upon us
sidenote but like... red is the color of freedom and green is the color of strings, and like, susie is kind of red and ralsei is pretty green so... i mean if we continue with this we can easily tie berdly to being the representation of kris or something since kris is blue at which point i think we're getting a little bit ahead of ourselves. or is the blue representative of individuality since it's tied to kris's ability to define themselves as someone important in the dark world? or is that individuality really just freedom disguised, since berdly is very aptly and eloquently a bird, and the red actually representative of rebellion? help im going insane. deltarune tomorrow. delta on my rune until i tomorrow. we can finally be bees. whatever. yes. have fun bye

Skip Google for Research
As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse. It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms
As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable. As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.
Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.
⁂
Google is so powerful that it “hides” other search systems from us. We just don’t know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free

hey netizens! i'm not sure how many people are aware, but youtube's been slowly rolling out a new anti-adblock policy that can't be bypassed with the usual software like uBlock Origin and Pi-Hole out of the gate
BUT, if you're a uBlock Origin user (or use an adblocker with a similar cosmetics modifier), you can add these commands in the uBlock dashboard (under My Filters) to get rid of it!
youtube.com##+js(set, yt.config_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0) youtube.com##+js(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw_player_response.adPlacements, []) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true)
