i do think this episode very nicely walks a fine line of not blaming morty for any of rick’s behavior while still acknowledging that, because of the abuse he’s gone through, he’s developed survival skills that allow him to successfully manipulate and act selfishly to get what he wants/needs, especially from rick. because sometimes in his household that’s the Only way he’s been able to get anything.

I think what one of my favourite things about modern rnm is that it's kinda stopped spelling things out for the viewers. In the past, we've had clean-cut episodes with clear plots and morals that are nearly impossible to misinterpret, but recently (ESPECIALLY in s9), things have gotten a lot more open ended!

I've really appreciated it since it allows a lot more input from the audience end, but my favourite thing about this is just how many interpretations can be drawn from one scene. A lot of scenes kind of leave you with this slow, creeping sense of doom that stays with you after the episode ends, and I think I far prefer that (especially regarding more earnest episodes such as s9e2/s9e10) to simpler ones more heavily based on shock value or action. It also allows for more heartfelt storytelling, like... there's no offhand comment about what you should feel. They're not scared to be taken seriously anymore. You're allowed to come to your own conclusions. Just feels so much more fresh to me

Rick taunts Morty whilst blackout drunk about how he’s going to turn out just like him, because addiction’s a genetic disease. He, later on, drugs him with a parasite that makes him hallucinate his pain and suffering into a happier scenario where he’s helping people. It turned an explosion into a happy cartoon sun. And somehow, he’s surprised and livid when Morty wants to see things that way all the time. Rick tells him that it’s inevitable that he’ll be a miserable addict. Morty watches in despair as his grandfather and mother drink to escape their pain. Rick’s still somehow surprised that Morty would think that using would be a valid option. After Morty marches off, Rick says that now would be a good time for a drink and then cut to Morty drugging himself.

(not saying it's his fault or anything like that, I'm just surprised that even though we know how low his morals are at this point, he wouldn't (or couldn't) admit what his presence caused in this universe, or the fact that he didn't even try to stop rick from drinking and acting like an idiot to his wife (but why would he? that's a typical rick thing. it was the “right” thing. it was to get back home))
