People have this weird belief that if you're critical of a system or tradition, then it must be because you failed to live up to that system or tradition. The idea of having a principled stance, regardless of whether or not *you* personally benefit from society accepting that stance, is foreign to so many people. My mom has an asshole cat. Heâs pushy, standoffish, demanding, hates to be pet, wonât sit on laps, grumbles and bites other cats. All the typical asshole cat stuff. (Yes, heâs healthy and has regular check-ups; heâs just a dick.)
I got really sick while house-sitting for my mom last winter. My nose and ears sealed up completely, my chest was congested, my throat cracked, my eyes swelled up and I couldnât really sleep because my airways kept closing the second Iâd lie down. Iâd just lie on the couch on a mound of pillows and periodically fall in and out of a daze.
After about three days of this, I snapped alert all of a sudden in the wee hours of morning, choking, unable to inflate my lungs all the way.
My momâs asshole cat was huddled down on all fours smack in the middle of my chest, looking horrifically uncomfortable with the situation, PURRING and PURRING like a damn chainsaw.
He cracked an eye to glare at me when I moved to pet him. This doesnât make us friends, he said.
âGood kitty,â I croaked, rubbing his cheek with one finger. âNice kitty. Good boy.â
You stink, he said. You disgust me.
Then he brushed off my finger, shut his eye, hunkered tighter, and kept purring. I fell asleep. I donât know exactly how long he was there, but it was at least a solid hour.
In the gazebo, Bianca was sitting alone. She'd spent another exhausting hour with Reiji, both of them becoming more and more frazzled as Bianca struggled to take on all of his instructions without interrupting or answering back. Reiji had an intolerance of both. Next she'd run into Ayato who'd tried to make her cook him some stupid human food, then called her names after she kicked him in the shin. On her way out of the door she had literally tripped over Shuu, who'd been sleeping with his legs across the threshold. She'd kicked him, too. The world suddenly seemed terribly confusing, frustrating, and altogether too full of brothers.
Now she sat with her hands folded in her lap, gazing out over the white roses. They were very pretty. She liked them better than the red. The flower-beds around her former home had roses like this; they also had roses of blue, special ones that didn't grow in the human world. There didn't seem to be any in the mansion grounds. Bianca found herself wondering if she'd ever get to see a real blue rose again. That made her wonder if she'd ever see her old home again, or any of the servants she'd been fond of, or her nurse.
She'd been trying very, very hard not to think about any of these things, because thinking about them made her chest hurt and Bianca insisted on being in control of her emotions. A vampire princess could not afford to be mastered by her feelings; she must always be calm and in full possession of herself. But now she was on her own in the garden, with nothing to distract her, the full shock of it all began to creep in.
Although Bianca had grown up knowing that someday she would leave the small, secluded house where she'd spent so many years and eventually meet her mysterious brothers, she hadn't expected such a sudden wrench. It was all too confusing. There were still so many things she didn't know. Even the name of Sakamaki had only been revealed to her during the journey: the ghoul servant who'd escorted her to the human world had filled her in on her new name. Bianca had never been told much about her mother; Nurse would only say that she'd been very beautiful and high-born, and was now dead. Bianca had met her father, of course -- twice! -- and she'd been told about her six brothers. But she hadn't known what they looked like, or about their diabolical personalities.
It had been so very sudden. One night everything had been perfectly normal -- she'd had her usual lessons, been given her usual glass of purified blood, taken her usual stroll in the woods and enjoyed shouting at a footman who happened to get in her way. Then the very next day she'd been shaken awake, well after dawn, by her nurse. The kindly old ghoul who had been her only real friend since she could recall told her, very urgently, that she needed to get read for a trip. She couldn't even take most of her favourite possessions; her nurse had promised faithfully that she'd send on Bianca's things in a day or two, but for now she had to travel light. She'd barely had a chance to hug and kiss her nurse goodbye before she'd been bundled into a carriage with the oddest little wheeled case for her clothes, rattled down the road to a portal, and then whisked out of the demon world all together.
And now here she was: alone with these horrid boys who were all so mean to her, not even knowing what she was supposed to do or who she could turn to. She missed her own room and her demon servants and most of all she missed Nurse. Instead of moving into a palace to rule her lesser siblings (with Nurse at her side, obviously), Bianca was more miserable than she'd ever been. Everything was ruined.
Despite all her struggles, the tears were coming. She could no longer hold them back. Her shoulders began to shake and soon she was sobbing, as quietly as she could.
"Why are you crying?"
Bianca raised her head. It was Kanato, gazing at her thoughtfully.
"I'm not crying," she said.
Kanato scoffed. "Don't lie. I hate it when people lie to me."
"I got something in my eye. That's all."
"I don't know why you won't admit it," mused Kanato. "I cry all the time."
"Well I don't," sniffed Bianca. Â
Kanato came and sat nearby. "I expect she's just angry with Reiji, right, Teddie?" he remarked to his toy. "Yes, that's a very good point. Reiji gets under everyone's skin from time to time but mostly we just ignore him."
Bianca was trying to sneak sidelong glances at the stuffed toy. She had assumed it was a transfigured servitor, or at least some sort of semi-sentient magical item. A few demons and vampires carried something similar, although they were usually items of jewellery or small pocket-pieces rather than something as ostentatious as Teddie. The consciousness in the item could remember important information, or carry out undemanding tasks. To Bianca's confusion, her senses showed her nothing of the sort. It was of demon make, certainly; however, the thing appeared to be no more nor less than a child's toy. Either Kanato's powers were too advanced for her to pierce his glamours -- highly unlikely, in her opinion -- or he was far more eccentric than she'd suspected.
"Stop staring at Teddie," Kanato rebuked her. "He's not a gazing-stock for poor relations."
"I'm not a poor relation," snapped Bianca.
"You certainly have very poor manners," replied Kanato.
"I was trained in manners and deportment by some of the most sought-after tutors in the land."
"I forbear to ask which land."
"The demon realm, of course."
"Oh. And what region?"
"Seven Rivers."
"Ah. The countryside. How quaint."
"I found it more convivial than an inner city environment."
"Ah. Well, it certainly explains your taste in clothes. You look rather like a milkmaid."
"At least I don't look as if I haven't slept in the last ninety years."
"At least I am over five feet tall."
"At least I'm not wearing knickerbockers."
"At least my hair doesn't look like a candy-floss in a high wind."
"At least I don't live entirely off sweets!"
"At least I don't live off milk tea."
Bianca tried to think of something else to say, but the only weak spot left was Teddie. Even though she hadn't known Kanato long, she instinctively sensed that going there was not something she wanted to do. Instead, she changed the subject.
"Why do you let your human roam around so much? Doesn't it run away?"
"Miss Yui? She did, or rather someone ran off with her. We got her back, though."
"It seems awfully full of itself. If a human had been so familiar at home, we'd have chained it up in the dungeon and whipped it."
"Oh, Reiji's already tried that. It didn't seem to make her behave at all." Kanato looked thoughtful. "I think she may actually have liked it. She's a bit⌠unusual."
"Hmm."
"The other brides didn't last nearly as long. I think my brothers have become rather soft on her."
"Oh? Why is she special?"
"It's somewhat involved. I'm not sure I should tell you."
"Why can't you tell me?" Bianca was put out. "I'm a Sakamaki too!"
"Well, if you must know, you could just ask Reiji."
"Ugh."
The pair fell silent again. It was almost companionable.
"I want to show you something," said Kanato suddenly. "Back inside the house." He stood up and waited expectantly for Bianca to do the same. After a moment's hesitation, she rose and followed him into the mansion. What else was there to do?
