Who was it who said that grief is love with nowhere to go
“Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.”
Jamie Anderson
hope your days get softer from here on out. hope the hurt lessens and the dark turns to light. you deserve gentleness and good love. I hope it finds you soon.
A lot of people in the notes are interpreting this as ‘retail versus office’.
Like… no. Most low-wage office jobs are tightly regulated and keep track of every minute of your time to squeeze maximum productivity out of you. While a lot of high-wage jobs that do not take place in front of a computer have lots of time to do with whatever you want.
Basically, bosses and CEOs trust and value their high-wage colleagues and try to keep them happy because they know high-wage workers could just find a different job at any time. Meanwhile bosses and CEOs do not trust or value the low-wage workers and at the same time know that those workers can be exploited because they can’t just quit.
Literally when I worked an office job for B/ooking.com they would monitor every aspect of our time. The way it worked is that you would have to log into their program at the start of your shift that would keep track of every customer service call, chat, and email you took and every break too.
Amongst their KPIs was 93% compliance, which means you had to strictly adhere to your schedule meaning you have to take breaks on the dot as predetermined on your rota. Took a long ass call right before your lunch break (cause you can’t not take a call obviously)? Doesn’t matter, you’re fucked. Didn’t eat lunch in time? Fuck you get back to work.
They also have a minimum amount of calls, chats, and emails you need to be completing per hour. Doesn’t matter if it was a particularly hard call or problem that took ages to solve. You need to meet those goals or you’re fired.
Oh and if you’re even a single minute late logging in to start your shift you get a warning in a typical 3 strikes you’re out way. Which is amazing for people with ADD/ADHD or no time management skills.
I got fired for being a minute late twice in 6 months and then eating at my desk when I wasn’t able to finish my food on my lunch break in time. Oh and the worst part is they have this dumbass “we’re a family” corporate culture bullshit to take over your work social life and dissuade unionization.
I need y'all to understand that white collar workers are workers too and many of them are poor as shit and have no job security either. I’ve worked both retail and office jobs and I was equally exploited at both. Build solidarity between workers.
^^^ this
& For the record, there are also almost entirely unmonitored jobs out there that are super exploitative. Like, where I live, most low ranking teachers, researches and PhD candidates at colleges/universities have an extremely high work load and endless low-wage temporary contracts without ever getting any job security. Can they set their own hours? Yes. But they’re also forced to work late into the night and weekends, eat their lunch and dinner at their desk, cut sleep to meet deadlines. Because if they don’t or if they’re just unlucky, their job is over at the end of the semester and it’s like that every semester. So are they exploited workers? absolutely.
I’ve told tons of stories about my horrible boss - my time at work is mostly unstructured and only occasionally tightly monitored (about once a month he gets on my ass to report what I’m doing every five minutes and I malicious compliance him with reports for three days until he tells me to stop) but if the phone rings three times and I don’t pick it up either because I’ve gone to the bathroom or because I’m answering six incoming calls at the same time with only three incoming holds he will call me to suggest that I’m not doing my job (which right now consists of purchasing, software licensing, dispatch, reception, marketing, and writing a book for him to stick his name on) and he could replace me with a temp.
So my time is unstructured in front of a computer and I’m extremely lucky to be working from home but I have to call my boss and ask permission to pee and when my husband was waiting for a transplant and had to have several pre-transplant surgeries there were two occasions when I was on the phone hearing that my husband was being put on life support or going into surgery and had to 1) join a zoom meeting 3 minutes later because I was still at work and wasn’t physically at the hospital due to covid 2) finish a research intensive quote with calls from my boss at five minute intervals within half an hour of my husband being put on life support because I “wasn’t planning my time out wisely and he still had a business to run that didn’t care about my personal problems” and as a result of this being a very small business I can’t take family leave without losing my job.
So. Like. Yeah, white collar work from home salaried unstructured isn’t mutually exclusive from underpaid, abused, exploited, and subject to wage theft.
since y’all lost your minds over this scene in my last set… thirst and ye shall receive
Robot head!!
I received the first dose of the covid-19 vaccine yesterday. So far, my arm is just really fucking sore. It was the Pfizer one, low key sad it wasn't the Moderna (DOLLYPARTONYALL) one. It was also 2 months after mom passed, I'll get the 2nd dose on the 3 month anniversary... kinda fitting.
And I owe people selfies. So here are some I like. And I pull off the face tat one surprisingly well...
sorry for being absent. I've had a lot on my plate in recent months.
not to be controversial but like. women who don’t compliment or validate their male significant others and instead criticize them constantly or make fun of them constantly really bother me. like tell ur boyfriend he’s cute or that you like his ass, he needs to feel good about himself too
