dan howell who ran away from his hometown the second he could and never looked back. dan howell who had a crush on a boy from the internet and moved himself in on the premise of needing to do laundry. dan howell who grappled with his sexuality for years before it broke him. dan howell who was promised his creative dream be fulfilled only for youtube to shaft him at the last minute. dan howell who turned around and wrote You Will Get Through This Night and Doomed because he needed to make art in order to survive. dan howell who took the time he needed to save his own life and come back on his own terms. dan howell, raised christian, realized no god was going to save him so he decided he had to. dan howell who again and again clawed his way into the light. made his own life the way he wanted it to be. fought back. dan howell, staunch disbeliever in red-string theory and fate and heaven because he worked every day of his life to get where he is and absolutely fuck some mythical entity who wants to take credit for that.

Ok so Dan and Phil and the phandom have been making me think about red string theory as a concept. The thing with red string as a metaphor for fate is that it ignores one of the most important features of string:

String doesn’t just spring into being, as someone studying textile history the process of creating string is labor intensive. It starts with either shearing an animal that you have to raise and treat well in order to get good fiber from or growing plants that you have to take care of and harvest at the right time and then processing their fibers to align them and separate them from other plant matter. Then you have to wash and treat either kind of fibers, which might sound like an easy process but this is probably the most labor intensive part. Only then can you start spinning them into thread. Hand spinning is a complicated process that requires a lot of skill, training, and intuition. Before machine spinning, people spent their lives learning to spin. For the string to be red string it must be dyed, with natural sources for red being either plants like red madder, or cochineal beetles used to make carmine. Dying requires a lot of chemistry knowledge, toxic chemicals, and skill, and often takes a lot of trial and error.

Anyways basically Dan and Phil can both be right, the red string of fate can tie them together, but someone had to create the string. Something something creating your own destiny.
