Idk if I'm late to this realization but it just ruined my fucking life to think that the Taylor who wrote Dear John is the same one that wrote Never Grow Up. Not only is she looking back at childhood longing to be free of trauma and wishing she never grew up, but she still says in Dear John that she was too young to be victimized by him.

Taylor wasn’t lying when she said she was a ‘new romantic’. I’ve always thought of that term/song obviously having queer implications. I keep thinking about the scarlet letter line in love story and in new romantics, and her contrasting growth between the two songs.

‘You were ‘Romeo’ I was a scarlet letter, and my daddy said stay away from Juliet’ // ‘We show off our different scarlet letters, trust me, mine is better’

The scarlet letter “A” represents the act of adultery that a woman has committed and it’s to be a symbol of her sin – a badge of shame for all to see. Obviously Taylor wasn’t ‘committing adultery’ at such a young age (remember the red tour jacket with the letter A?). The scarlet letter she’s speaking about is having a relationship with a girl, a forbidden love. It sometimes feels like you’re wearing a scarlet letter. A feeling LGBTQ+ people know all too well. ‘I sneak out to the garden to see you… we keep quiet cause we’re dead if they knew’.

Contrasting that to her use of scarlet letter in New Romantics, we can see her teasing embrace of it. ‘We show off our different scarlet letters, trust me, mine is better’. Her enthusiastic delivery of the song in general, but this line specifically on the 1989 tour was telling.

The rumors

Her call back to the romantic era in the lakes I think ties back to this full circle moment of how far shes come. She is a new romantic… and wears that badge proudly.

The Lakes: Big Sur trip, “cabin in candlelight” & “wisteria”

So Taylor released the “cabin in candlelight” version of cardigan today

When I saw cabins in candlelight, I immediately thought of the ♠️ riddles:

♠️The light danced through the panes, onto the walls, and drowned the room in a yellow flame. Blind to the world outside, we giggled like little girls.

♠️ The candle flickered, your eyes darted, my heart pounded.

Now, we know that no one has heard the bonus track “the lakes” yet, but some lyrics have been released. One of the lyrics is this:

I began thinking of places Taylor and Karlie have been that would involve a cabin. One of the places they were rumored to stay at during their Big Sur trip was Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn. I couldn’t remember the name of it when I was looking so I googled “Big Sur cabin Taylor and Karlie” and this is one of the first images that pulled up.

Oh would you look at that WISTERIA.

My guess is “the lakes” is about their trip to Big Sur and that a lyric in it will reference “cabin in candlelight” or maybe even one of the ♠️ riddles.

Taylor tells her truth through her lyrics. Eventually people will figure out that kaylor is alive and well.

“If I could dance with you again”

I was just thinking about DWOHT and how the whole song is in the past tense. This can mean 2 things, 1) Taylor is talking about one specific time that they danced (kissgate) or 2) The relationship is over. Now if reputation is about Joe, this song doesn’t make sense (much like a lot of the other love songs on reputation). I just can’t get over the theory of DWOHT being about kissgate and Taylor’s regrets regarding the situation. DWOHT really only makes sense when it comes to kissgate. The 25 years old line doesn’t add up with Tom or Calvin, but it does align with the aftermath of kissgate (thirsty media tweet).

Meaning: If I could do it all over again, I'd dance with you and kiss you and not be afraid of who saw us or what the consequences would be. I pushed you away because I was scared, I wouldn't make that mistake again. I'd hold you as everything crumbled around us, having you is worth watching my world burn.
