The one thing that separates us from all other living things ever in existence and makes human beings such an extraordinary species is our conscious mind. This is also the Achilles heel of humanity in that it creates an almost impassable barrier between our lives as separate beings distracted by our own illusion of individuality, and the reality of being connected in innumerable ways to our own species and to those that we share an environment with. Consciousness is an amazing thing of self awareness and introspection, and it allows us to connect with "like-minded" people, who, by my own definition, are those who have a similar way of interpreting internal activation in response to various external stimuli. Consciousness also makes available connection through similar positive arousal, such as a shared sense of cultural pride or a mutual feeling of love. I believe that we become most weak under conscious experience of negative arousal. It is only the depressing effects of negative activation that can subdue us and leave us most vulnerable. The astounding effect that this has on us and our desire for the positive arousal is what leaves us prey to mass control by higher powers, be that God, the government, celebrity influence, the media, advertisers, etc. We are just a collective species that are weak under the distraction of our individualistic conscious experiences and we need to be aware that humanity as it is in the modern world is simply a byproduct of our own intelligence.
