i was sitting on this post a while and i decided might as well get it out sooner than later lol...
theres this except from a tonic trouble interview in the january 1999 issue of the gamers republic magazine (specifying the last paragraph)
well. i dont think that psychological analysis was ever actually a real thing. so i guess i have to do everything myself
here it is: a psychological analysis of ed from some tumblr user who should probably find a better use of her time (and still sat on this post for a few months)
first of all: where in the world did they get "twisted schizophrenic completely clueless about reality" from LOL hes just like. a guy
the more sort of apparent thing is the dichotomy between being this nervous little bug creature and just smug (which is kind of just his default expression in the actual game)
but hes not even actually ilke that all the time, and thats not even counting the intro. many facets to him.
i like to think he just acts rather cocky when things are going well (& he also thinks of himself much cooler than he actually is), but he drops that facade with any strong enough emotion and also instantly folds under any pressure. which is why he spends most of the intro just panicking (nothing is going well for him)
note that most of this is pretty headcanoney, just closely informed by whats official
-
speaking of the intro. literally the first thing you see out of him in the game, at all, is him just not doing his job at all (hes still in his ugly unclean work clothes and just kinda left the mop behind nearby), in favor of trying to get together with a girl with Flowery Words. and its pretty remarkable that he tries this while wearing those exact ugly unclean work clothes and not anything nicer
its also worth noting that the girl in question is burk's girlfriend, and ed says (at the door, but clearly talking to her, who does not seem to be there to be hear any of this) that burk doesnt deserve her and also insults him. the result is that, instead of the girl hearing this, it was burk himself who then tries to kill ed with a metal pipe. evidently hes also well familiar with burk and they dont get along in the slightest
anyway ed is a notorious Girl Liker and hes also just head over heels for suzy. in the game over map he just instantly topples over a single air kissie from her, and its worth noting the brief moment in the animation where he turns his head away from her with the biggest dumbest grin on his face before going back to the C Β¦ expression. like hes being a little shy (though normally hes not shy around girls, evidently??)
him being a romantic is like a pretty big part of him theres plenty of this (at least in a few cutscenes; otherwise suzy just talks at him and he still does his idle animation because he doesnt talk outside of the intro unfortunately)

back to the intro. my most likely explanation for why he just drinks the tonic with little hesitation (cuz hes sad and just cried over the burk thing) is because (he thought) it was like. alcohol. because why is it just here these look like alcohol bottles
this is also supported by grogh literally just more or less referring to it as beer (+ the barman, outside of the intro, refers to the groga (which is made out of tonic) as being in the beer cellar and also treats it as alcohol). anyway ithink he drinks alcohol when sad.
also yeah he just cries once he feels safe enough from being hit with a metal pipe and then just walks off miserable. so he can definitely be sensitive and not repress it, at least when by himself
back to alcohol. the fact that in the really old version of the intro (back when he wasnt even named ed. well he nearly was) the whole plot happened because he was drunk (except the tonic wasnt actually alcohol here). its literally canon
-
i would also say that hes more careless (as a manual description puts it) than clumsy. him throwing the tonic can out of the ship was very deliberate, just not thought out in the slightest because he was panicking
that is not to say he isnt still clumsy. sometimes he bonks himself on the head with his stick by accident, and (not intended character trait, its just caused by some wonky collision during gameplay) will sometimes just slip on like. nothing
-
on the topic of being a nervous little creature these nervous grins are probably a common expression for him for when he gets into problems
again the entire piece of artwork (earlier this post) where he does this. and its probably the piece of artwork youre the most likely to see out of him, outside of the cover art, considering its also on what little has been covered of tonic trouble in raywiki
-
in the n64 version's intro he finds some kind of creature that is like a bug or a rat, and tries to beat it with a feather duster on sight
(also that means hes the kind of guy that sees a bug and tries to kill it for literally just being there. unfortunately.)
& in the game itself he makes a >:D expression when he attacks (with his stick) while running. its clear from both that he loves beating things up with a stick. violent little man
on other physical capabilities. he can somehow handstand AND handwalk (at least for a few seconds here before he falls over) which is rather impressive for a notoriously clumsy guy with a really tall hed
-
several characters in the game keep referring to him as a kid (one time very derogatorily) or just young man. like he is objectively an adult man with a job but he comes off as pretty darn young still
like, hes small and has a fairly soft squeaky voice (aside from sounding noticeably more mature in the intro???)
-
theres this artwork that appears in magazines sometimes. i think theres definitely something to read into with the fact that he would definitely feel like he would be more respected if he was just like super ed normally, right?
on the other hand im not sure he would actually really want to be like that normally (i know suzy would like him to), but i admit this is just me projecting the fact that i, personally, would prefer him to remain a scrawny little short guy
-
another interesting thing: theres this from the old website, which is a window that appears when you click in the approximate area of his noggin. so this is just whats going on inside his head. in a cartoons sense
remarkable traits include:
- I think thats a picture of his mom. most likely
- since thats there you can infer then that he probably has a good relationship with his mom. its also remarkable that hes bald and she isnt (the random crowd members in the intro suggest that either being bald or not bald is both fairly common for the species, for what its worth)
- a magazine called βBOY with a picture of a buff shirtless man on the cover (my friend concluded from this that hes bi.)
- the thing on the right that says "ego" (pointed into the brain in jar which isnt here), that maybe points to what i was talking about with him being a smug little ass
- its remarkably cluttered? for like, a janitor? theres a spiderweb??
-
so like. in summation. he is a pathetic little man that will act cocky and overconfident when things are going right and will be panicky or maybe cry when theyre not going right. he loves hitting things with a stick. and he just really wants someone to kissies him
