Normally I’d never do this but this is an actual nightmare of an emergency. My mother’s been rushed to the hospital and we need money to help fund her treatment plans and so she can eventually go home. I know it would kill the whimsy a bit, but it would be interesting to see period dramas frame their heroines marrying for love less as "I think of marriage as a love match in a modern romance way" and more as "since I'm allowed choice, I want to ensure this man will actually respect me as a person for my whole life. I'm entering a contract where he has alarming control of my life, and I want to make sure it's not terrible, even when neither of us is young and hot anymore."
It's not said explicitly in so many words, but this is what Jane Austen was trying to say 250 yeas ago. "Make sure your husband has a good moral education and basic decency before you marry him."
Yup. In a world where you legally can’t get a job without being irrevocably cut off from every relationship you’ve ever known (and the jobs all SUCK to boot), there is no happy ever after without a well-padded purse. True love’s kisses won’t feed you.
Austen’s stories had two intentions: 1. To teach young ladies that no man who truly loves you would ask you to starve for him. 2. To point out to everyone else how awful systems that create situations where people must choose between being fed and being loved are.
That isn’t to say that folks didn’t hope for a life partner they’d love (Who wouldn’t want that?), but it could never be the singular or primary focus. A lady or gentleman determined to marry for love at all costs in a period piece is as anachronistic as a can of Spam.
It’s important to note that every single Austen novel includes at least one marriage made for the wrong reasons to underline just how important it is for the heroine to choose someone who will respect and take care of her.
it’s also relevant that Austen was personally experiencing these decisions as a young lady with some eligible offers of marriage! this was her life, it was extremely serious business who she married (or chose not to marry). marital rape was legal, men could and did beat their wives, and Morality and Reputation were taken Deadly Serious back then so marrying a gambler (Wickham) or a drinker (Hurst) or a guy who cheated could bring dishonour (or at least embarrassment!) on the wife’s family of origin. Austen never married, though she was engaged once and broke it off.
her father and brother had to financially support her as her books were not making much money in her lifetime and even when they did the publisher tried to rip her off bc she was a woman.
in short, she wrote what she knew and did it so cleverly we are still reading it two hundred and some years later.
she was one of the earlier writers to use free indirect discourse in most of her works. this narrative technique’s subsequent popularity is attributed to Austen by many literary historians.
part of the reason I think it’s so sad that we collectively write so few stories about unrequited love is bc I feel like there’s very little public acknowledgment of how much it sucks to be the one somebody is in unrequited love with??? and not in a way of like, oh they’re crossing boundaries or putting expectations on me or whatever. becoming close friends with someone and then finding out they’re in love with you and you don’t love them back the same way is heartbreaking, bc a) someone you love is in pain and there is literally nothing you can do about it, and b) it usually means that whether you like it or not there’s going to be distance in your friendship that wasn’t there before as they try to get over you. idk man I just feel like we’ve all discussed the tragedy of loving someone who doesn’t love you back quite a lot and very rarely discuss the tragedy of finding out the way that you love someone just isn’t enough.

hello, my friends/followers! as i promised my generous friends that supported readings this year and thus helped me to buy a new deck - which arrived this week - i am hosting an ask game. thank you so much to everyone who has been supporting my blog this year from likes to follows to reblogs. i truly appreciate each and everyone of you! i also appreciate everyone who has purchased a reading from me and thus paid for my cerulean sequence deck!!
