Decaying Staircases
In the words of the artist Ralph Graef:
Ever since I was captivated by abandoned and decaying buildings with their own history and, thus, they belong to my oldest photographic themes. The withdrawal of the soviet military forces in Germany, the annulment of the NVA (army of the GDR) and the end of the cold war has left numerous empty, often historic buildings that are decaying now for more than 20 years. In many cases they have no chance of preservation as the required capital assets are not balanced by the profit that can be expected in a sparsely populated country such as Brandenburg. When taking photos in such places I do not just want to keep records of them. Rather my aim is to capture the unique mood of these abandoned, quiet rooms, which inspires associations despite or because of their emptiness and darkness, and send the viewer on an emotional mind trip.

Walking on Water
Christo’s ‘Floating Piers’ installation finally opens to the public June 18th. The highly-anticipated reveal sees 100,000 square meters of shimmering yellow fabric wrap a floating dock that connects various points on Italy’s Lake Iseo. Undulating with the movement of the waves, visitors can now experience the ‘Floating Piers’ as they walk from Sulzano to Monte Isola and to the island of San Paolo, which it completely encircles. The 3 kilometer-long walkway extends clear across the water, with surrounding mountains offering a bird’s-eye view of a golden network of passageways that lead in and around the town. The fabric continues along 1.5 kilometers of pedestrian streets in Sulzano and Peschiera Maraglio.

Dream of Venice Architecture
Dream of Venice Architecture, the second in a series by Bella Figura Publications, has brought together a collection of contemporary architects and architectural writers to share their personal experiences of La Serenissima: the great Italian city of Venice. “Water runs through her veins,” Editor JoAnn Locktov writes. “Bridges, palaces, churches – every structure is a testament to the resiliency of imagination.”
“Riccardo De Cal took a photograph for each essay,” Locktov continues. “He has illustrated the words with an evocative Venice; one that basks in blue winter light, sleeps quietly and becomes an apparition when shrouded in fog. This is the Venice that greets you when you turn a corner and enter an empty campo. This is the Venice that is a contemplative paradox of stone and air. If we can understand what Venice offers us, we will respect her fragility. We will continue to learn her lessons, and cherish her existence.”
We previously featured some images from this project here.

This was our third date where I fumbled with my camera and didn’t set the aperture right, where we forgot we meant to see the gardens, everything has changed in the best way possible, but this photo brings me back to that wonderfully warm day with that delicious gelato <3
