something I've observed from trying to explain math concepts to people who are "bad at math" by their own words (or just not really into it) or trying to guide them through some mathematical text is that their issue in not "getting" it is that they're using a completely wrong way to think about it, thinking about it in terms of physical objects. imo the key to getting it is to look at math in a strictly abstract way. you have rules you start with and you make deductions from that. that's it, no need to get anything messy into it.

on the plane the pilot has years of training and everything is tightly regulated. i’d be willing to be a pilot on a commercial airline! i think i might enjoy it even. i am good at staying calm under pressure and i know everyone involved is a professional and the risks are low. a lot of it depends on me. the rules and procedures are strict and thought through a thousand times because everyone knows it would be dangerous otherwise.

getting a driver’s license is not that hard. ive heard of some people who just buy a license. your neighbor’s dumbass cousin bob can just get a car and go nuts whatever it’s cool. literal high schoolers, children, can drive a car in some countries (i have enough experience being a teenager to know that is a bad idea but adults are not that much better). people drinking and driving is not that rare! some people text on their phone while driving! nobody takes it as seriously as they should and they put the lives of others at risk. who the fuck decided everyone having a death machine made of a ton of steel that goes at 100 km per hour is a good idea. why does society accept this???

there are a bunch of unqualified strangers you just have to trust to not be fucking stupid while operating a piece of dangerous machinery they do not take seriously enough. the logical conclusion is to take every possible measure to avoid this. it is not because i think i am incompetent. i trust myself. it is because i know others are and i cannot trust them

obviously most people die from other things but it’s best to minimize risk where possible. and dying is not the only effect that is preferable to avoid. statistically cars aren’t exactly the safest kind of transport. i think people need to be more cautious about cars on average. and about everything else too

per unit length it's not awful even if you assume risk is uniform, which it certainly isn't. most people get injured from other things too! it's not like we're drafting people to go mad max on the highways here, if ppl are choosing to take on the (honestly pretty minor) risk than it's presumably bc they benefit from it

yeah that’s fair (don’t think “most people die/get injured from other things” is a good argument or relevant tho), obv in terms of policy my main concerns are not at all the safety aspect, this is more like a personal neurotic thing maybe should have been more clear (although if i lived somewhere with no public transport ig i’d be forced to learn to drive or else never go further than like 10 km from my residence. guessing this is the case for many people too rather than a conscious decision). maybe im just like. much more risk averse than the average person

Day before yesterday I impulsively nibbled a bit of my mountain mint plant and after 3 seconds had to spit it out because my mouth flooded with intense, burning minty cold much greater than normal spearmint

Wood sorrel would be a great flavor for a candy. It's so tart and tangy, some people say it's like lemon but it doesn't have the chalky undertone of lemon, it's like the dryness of lemon acidity was replaced with juicy. Green apple but less sweet, more vegetable. i love to eat the woodsorrel (but don't eat too much because it has oxalic acid which your kidneys don't like)

I made woodsorrel candy!

Here's what I did:

Harvest several generous handfuls of woodsorrel (Oxalis stricta). It grows rampantly near the bushes outside my apartment, so this was very easy for me.

Clean the plants and strip the leaves. I ended up with about a quarter cup of fresh leaves, but I think that more would yield a more flavorful result. Using 1/2 cup and 2 Tbsp of just-boiled water, steep the leaves for 20 minutes to make a tisane. Mine didn't noticeably change color, but it smelled delightfully lemony.

Prepare a rimmed baking sheet with a silicone mat sitting in it. This will be important later.

Strain the tisane into a smallish pot with high sides over high heat. Then add 1 cup + 2 Tbsp of sugar, and 2 Tbsp of corn syrup. (I do not recommend omitting the corn syrup, because the invert sugars are very good at preventing unwanted crystalization). Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly, then keep stirring until it reaches 300 degrees F, or the hard-crack stage of candy.

Then pour the candy onto the silicone mat in the baking sheet. It is VERY HOT at this stage, absolutely DO NOT TOUCH with your hands. If you want to color the candy, this is a good time to do it, put a couple of drops of food color on the candy (I was trying to dye mine green, but I grabbed red instead of yellow, oops!).

Then, using a spoon or a bench scraper fold the hardening edges of the candy toward the hot center, and repeat until it becomes cool enough to touch with your hands. Pull it like taffy. If it becomes too stiff and unworkable, heat it in the microwave in 10 second increments until it becomes workable again. When you are happy with how it looks, cut it into segments.

It tastes a bit like lime and a bit like green apple, it's very good! I think it might be nice to use more woodsorrel, or possibly used dried woodsorrel as well as fresh
